Optimum Nutrition vs. Syntha 6

I have been buying Optimum Nutrition whey protein for as long as I've been buying protein. Recently, a friend showed me Syntha 6, which I'd previously written off due to the higher price per gram of protein. I actually got to try some of it, and the excellent taste in water compelled me to look into it a little more closely.

ON tastes mediocre in water, but good in milk. I've recently decided to only purchase organic animal products, as they are much healthier and more ethical. Syntha 6 tastes great in water. The initial question I had was: "After incorporating the price of milk, is ON more expensive than Syntha 6?"

The answer is no. Two scoops of ON and two cups of organic skim milk costs $2.26 and provide 64g of protein, 30g carbs, 2g fat, and 400 calories. Three scoops of Syntha 6 costs $2.94 and provides 66g protein, 30g carbs, 18g fat, and 600 calories.

What does that extra 200 calories and $0.70 get us? Mostly, a much better taste. There's 5g fiber per serving, which is good. The fats in Syntha 6 are derived from sunflower oil (50-75% omega 6, not good) and MCT (which is good). The fats are probably a net neutral effect, but their ability to potentially slow insulin release and digestion might be positive.

Switching the milk to whole milk in the ON+Milk shake would add roughly 16g of good fats (mostly saturated and mono-unsaturated, very few omega-6) at no additional cost, while still having fewer calories (600 vs 544) than the Syntha 6 shake. 

Thus concludes my analysis on these two proteins. I'll continue to use ON and milk, as I don't see the benefits of Syntha 6 as being worth the increased cost.
