Story Time!
So, you guys are probably wondering how did I find out I was adopted. Well, that was an interesting day to say the least.
So, I was helping Pop in the field, harvesting the corn and shucking them. Well, the basket was getting full and Pop still had three rows of corn stalks to harvest before the night time critters start eating it. So Pop told me to go up into the attic and see if I could find our big pot that we only used for holiday stews and pot roasts. Yum, Mama's cookin' , ya couldn't beat it. Especially if it was fresh deer meat and seasoned just right with mashed potatoes from the farm...I'm getting off topic, aren't I?
Anyhoo, I go inside and go up the steps and pull down the string for the attic stairs to come down. So I peeked my head around at the opening of the attic. It was dusty and covered in cobwebs. I'm pretty sure I had some webs in my hair after the fact. I climbed up into the small attic space. I had to squat just to fit, but it wasn't so tight that it was difficult to move. So I'm looking in this nasty attic. There were blankets covering old boxes and small wooden crates that look like the wood was warping or rotting. Not fun. But I noticed something seemed a little off. I couldn't put my finger on it, but as I kept looking for the pot, I noticed that something underneath a blanket was glowing slightly.
Now at the time, I thought Pop had left a flashlight up there, so I go to the blanket and I pulled it away, but a flashlight was not what I saw. A beautiful bow that looked like it had been crafted with small silvery blue dragon scales with strange cravings all round it. I looked around for a light source to explain why it looked like it was glowing, but no. The window in the attic was on the far right and the sun was going down, so there wasn't enough sunshine to give it that effect.
I was 12 when I found this bow up in the attic and I wasn't a fan of weapons in general. But something was drawing me towards it, like I needed this bow in my life. So, I grabbed it, put it on my back, and headed back down the attic steps, forgetting the pot all together. I didn't even put up the stairs. I immediately went to see Mama in the kitchen. I remember asking her about the bow. When she turned to see me, she dropped the plate she was cleaning and it smashed against the floor.
"Mama, what's wrong?"
She didn't answer me, instead she opened the screen door and yelled for Pop to come inside. Her voice was kinda panicked, but stern when she demanded the he come inside. Of course, Pop wasn't happy that he had to stop mid-harvest to see what the all the shouting was for.
"Honey, you know I gotta pull all the corn out and put it in storage before.." Pop stopped mid-sentence to look over at me. His eyes were now on me and the bow wrapped around my back.
"Did..did I do something wrong?" I had asked. Both of my parents were just looking at me and then back to each other. Now I was nervous. What was wrong with them?
Finally, Pop spoke and looked me in the eyes. "We need to talk."
I remember my heart sinking like a stone. They only used that word when I was in deep trouble. Immediately, I started to apologise for bringing the bow downstairs and that I could put it back, but he shook his head as he sat at the kitchen table, wiping his forehead with a rag from his overall pocket. Mama sat beside him and I remember her face. She looked sad and worried as I sat down, removing the bow from my back and I kept it by my side.
"Aurora, we need to tell you something. And we were hoping to put it off until you were 18. However, I guess now's a good time as its gonna be." Pop said with a serious tone.
"What..? Is thing cursed or something? Why do we have it if it's cursed?"
"We have it because of you, sweetie." Mama interjected in her calming voice. She held Pop's calloused hand as she spoke. "Aurora, you..." She sighed before continuing her sentence. "We found it with you."
"Found it with me? But I was born in the house, you guys have told me multiple times how Mama went into labor on the kitchen floor and I was born two hours later!"
"Kiddo, you're not our biological child. We found you on the porch on a warm summer's night. All you had was a blanket, and that bow leaning against the doorway."
It was really hard to hear that. Until that day, I believed that my parents were..my parents! But now, I'm hearing that they just found me? I remember being really angry for a couple of seconds. 'How could they lie to me like this?!'
Before I could say anything, Mama spoke. She was holding back her tears. Her voice was getting choked up and shaking.
"I know you must be angry that we lied to you, but please please understand that even though you're not our daughter by blood, you are still our little girl."
It was a couple minutes before I spoke. But I just had one question.
"Where's the note?"
My parents looked at each other before Pop looked at me again.
"There wasn't a note. Just you and that bow. We're sorry that we don't have the answers you deserve, but it's the truth." His voice was sincere and honest.
"Did you see them? My biological parents, I mean. Did you see them walking away or anything?" I asked.
They simply shook their heads. I remember feeling angry again, but more frustrated than anything else. How could my real parents leave me with no note, but this stupid bow! Granted it was beautiful bow, but a bow none the less. I grabbed the bow, with a vice grip. I wanted it out of my sight. I swung open the screen door and just as I was about to chuck it out of the house, someone spoke.
"What do you think you're doing?! I know you weren't just about to throw me outside!" The voice was angry, but sounded like a mom who heard her kid back talk to her.
I remember looking around the kitchen and out the door, seeing if I could find the voice. Then the voice came back into existence.
"Look, I believe we're getting off the wrong foot. If you would just put me down, we can talk about this."
Then I hit me like a ton of bricks as I looked at my hands, which were holding onto this bow. The bow was talking.

Thoughts on school
I did go to elementary school for a short time. It wasn't easy for me though. The other kids and some of the teachers thought of me as a monster due to my ears and eyes being so different. I was often called 'donkey ears.' Most of the time, I didn't mind. Mama told me if they picked on me they were just jealous, while Pop told me if someone was picking on me to show them that you're stronger than them by showing them that they can't get to me. However, after a couple of years, it gets tiring. I told my teachers and Pop even went to the principal about the bullying, but nothing ever changed.
Until the day something happened. I don't remember it all that well to be honest...but I know that after that day, kids never picked on me again. I believe I was in 3rd grade (?), when it happened.
It was gym class and we were outside about to run laps. It was a nice spring day and some of the flowers were starting to bloom. As normal a group of boys were picking on me and calling me names. I simply turned my back to them as I waited for the teacher to tell us to get on the track. Then I remember one of the kids shouting at me. "Hey, we ain't done with you, Donkey Ears!" I heard something cutting through the air. They apparently had thrown a rock at my head because I remember my head throbbing and warm blood seeping through my hair. Then I remember being surrounded by the group of three boys, and they began to beat me and kick me down to the ground.
Then I don't remember anything after that. It became really dark and it didn't feel any pain. I don't really know if I had passed out or if I simply went numb, but..the scene once I woke up, it still brings me nightmares. I remember the iron smell, the red ground and all three of the boys were unconscious and had scratches and gashes on the ground. Of course I gasp and ask if they were ok, but the teacher yelled at me before I could get near them.
"You really are a monster! Get away from them!"
I was very confused, then I looked at my hands and then I realized that I had blood all over me. I looked at everyone, hoping they would give me some kind of answer. Was it my blood? Was it their blood? What happened? But all I got was gasps and them backing away from me in fear.
Shortly after, the police and ambulances showed up at the school along with everyone's parents, including my own. Of course they were horrified by the sight of me covered in blood and three bloodied boys being loaded into the ambulances.
"Sweetie! What happened?! Are you ok?" Mama asked frantically looking me over.
I didn't know. And I was scared to tell her that, because..I was afraid she wouldn't believe me. I didn't want my own parents to push me away. Before I muster anything to say anything, the police came up to my parents and began to ask questions about me.
After that long day, the police took my DNA and I was expelled from school due to 'acting in extreme violence' even though later in the month I was proven innocent due to the DNA results not matching my own.
Mama and Pop sat down with me and asked me what had happened, but I couldn't tell them because I didn't remember anything. I wanted to say I didn't hurt them. I wanted to say it was in self defense. But..I couldn't because it wouldn't have been true. After that, Mama decided to home school me and Pop was teaching me to control my emotions, hoping that would help. But after that day, I knew something had changed within me. And I didn't know what.
