#I NEED TO BITCH ABOUT TOBY WITH SOMEONE FUCK THAT GUY TO HELL AND BACK #why do i lowkey feel like he experienced feminine rage tho like the shitty cinematic romanticized kind #i read witch elm like a week or so ago and it left me FUMING with just liek everything #susanna my love! leon my love #toby literally die
Friend, you’re so Correct! That guy sucks! A big part of the appeal of The Witch Elm was how utterly tone-deaf his narration is; the rest of the appeal was watching him suffer.
Tana French is such a great writer, the Ominous Vibes are excellent, and Toby’s character arc was so well crafted that by the end I sort of felt sorry for him - which he would absolutely hate if he were not fictional, so that makes it even better. Some of my notes while reading the book, according to goodreads:
At 45%: Toby is giving me Rob vibes as far as Tana French narrators go and idk how to feel about this (still I stand by this! except he’s a bigger asshole than Rob could ever hope to be)
At 67%: I love that Toby is so self absorbed that everyone around him is like "well he could have murdered someone and then forgot about it because it made him feel bad". Himself included
At 81%: Toby listening to Sue's harrowing story of unrelenting sexual harassment and making it all about himself and self congratulating for being a good guy is SUCH a Toby thing to do
At 86%: Toby: what do you mean I'm not cut out for murder? I COULD be if I wanted to
Anyway. You’re so right, Susanna is GREAT, Leon only slightly less great. Toby is... there. To suffer :)
