This incredibly satisfying Tom Yum Soup is done with coconut milk (therefor, Tom Yum Goong Nam Khon).
In Yangzi’s Level 3 Pop’n Sweet Cafe story, he makes Tom Yum Goong for MC and adds coconut milk and tomato to counteract some of the heat for her. The Pop’n Sweet image clearly has shrimp in the soup (and also shrimp is what makes it tom yum goong).
In addition to having coconut milk, tomato, and shrimp, the reason why I chose this recipe over something more “authentic” was because it helps to explain that traditional tom yum goong is not made with coconut milk at all! I was reading in other articles that some Thai chefs use evaporated milk in their tom yum instead.
However, “master chef” Yangzi (as he repeatedly calls himself in the story) uses coconut milk to cut some of the heat, so coconut milk it is!
