Kowloon Generic Romance Episode 9 Review - Don't Eat The Food

As much as Kudo’s coldness towards Kujirai and how he goes back and forth when it comes to loving both Kujirai and Kujirai-B, I get where he’s coming from. However, that doesn’t mean I accept his actions because he’s seriously testing my patience. I am inching closer to wanting to transport myself into that world and slap him for his indecisiveness. I get that he’s still not over his late fiancee and that Kujirai is essentially her own person that just looks like Kujirai-B. The way he was testing her about the French toast thing was low, but it does make me wonder if he’s scared. Is he scared of accepting that they’re two different people? Is he scared of coming to terms that he can love Kujirai if she becomes a different person?

I have all these questions about Kowloon and it made me realize that out of all the characters in this story, he’s actually the most mysterious because the narrative doesn’t focus too much on his inner, true feelings on the whole matter; it’s just shown glimpses and it get glossed over for the overarching mysteries shrouding Kowloon. Like, it’s confirmed that he’s an original, but why hasn’t he been affected by the food he eats in Kowloon? It feels as if the world is conforming to his memories in a way… Will everything about him be revealed towards the end?

Yaomay is my favorite character in this story, but it does upset me that she got the silenced treatment to prevent her from revealing too much about the plot. At least Kowloon isn’t a story like Fullmetal Alchemist where Yaomay would’ve been a tragic death just because she knew or tried to pry too much. Still, the scene where she drank the coffee and suddenly forgot what she was going to say was really creepy. If you’re familiar with Greek mythology, the scene reminded me of the lotus eater portion of the Odyssey where eating the lotus flower make one forget what they were doing and drown in forgetfulness.

I do think that Xiaohei was the spotlight of this episode. He’s a spy working for Papa Hebinuma, yet he’s not inherently antagonistic. If anything, he’s rather sweet. He has a passion for frilly clothes, but laments over being unable to wear them in his current state. Fortunately, Yaomay and Kujirai are supportive of him and the former even sews frills into his vest. Because he’s implemented into the story rather late, he is mysterious. Why is he working for Papa Hebinuma? Why has the female Xiaohei yet to disappear when he’s the original? I do like that his status as an antagonist does get tested when Yu Long wants him to work for him and to betray Papa Hebinuma.

With how Yu Long behaved at the end of this episode towards Xiaohei, it makes me wonder if Yu Long is the big bad of this story. While he is working with Miyuki and is also from Kowloon, he gives off major suspicious vibes. His eyes remind me of a goat with the square vertical pupils. If you’re familiar with symbolism and such, goats can represent either greatness or wickedness. Yu Long perfectly represents both sides. He’s great in that he’s helping out Miyuki with his revenge, but he’s also wicked with how he wanted Xiaohei to get rid of the generic Kujirai.

The Guen and Miyuki scene was interesting in that Guen was warning his ex-boyfriend about consuming food in Kowloon, but he already knew everything as he oversees everything. Miyuki is still fixated on revenge while Guen is upset that he probably knows nothing about his beloved. I do wonder how their relationship will be resolved at the end… Also, is it just me or are the Guen and Miyuki scenes awkwardly animated? Normally, the animation quality is good, but this episode looks quite janky and the Guen and Miyuki scenes show them off the most.

Kujirai is stronger than me because if I put on glasses that showed me memories of my original, I’d burn them. Still, I get why she’d be curious because what are those talismans for? Are they a factor to why Kujirai-B died?

It’s crazy how next week starts the double digits in episode count for Kowloon Generic Romance. Since there are thirteen episodes, I do wonder how they’ll conclude everything in just four episodes. The manga hasn’t ended yet, so the finale of the anime will be a reveal of the ending. Though, I’ve heard that the manga ending, anime ending and live action ending will all have different endings, but I’ve also been told that it’s not the case. Just what is the truth? Let me know your thoughts on this episode!

An ally. The dragon from the river was an ally and I never should’ve needed to fight him. And now we are all sitting in a forest without a fire because this dragon pup is upset with Tripitaka for making him work.

How Tripitaka didn’t know about getting disciples I have no idea but I can and will blame Quanyin for this. Especially since I’m now stuck babysitting two vulnerable mortals. Even if the dragon seems to hold “Sun Wukong” on a pedestal for all the things Heaven claims I’ve done(and what I have done).

The dragon, common name Bai Long Ma or Yu Long, is the fourth son of the Dragon King of the West and maybe that is why he was not given a circlet such as mine despite his… bratty behaviors. He is as far as I or Tripitaka can tell-

“Your Majesty!”

The journal Sihua had been writing in was nearly torn from her hands by the excitable dragon prince shoving it down. “Yes Yu Long.” Sihua pulled the poor book back to her chest

The young prince scrunched his nose at the address, human face odd looking with the scales crawling along his cheeks, but stepped back and responded all the same. “Please explain to this monk that we will not be subject to sleeping in the dirt! It’s bad enough that I must lower myself to being his,” the pup gagged, “steed, I will not also be made to sleep in the mud! WE are royalty and-”

Sihua restrained a sigh and tuned out the speech, Bai Long Ma had been complaining similarly since they had stopped to make camp.

‘Where is the meat?!’

‘What do you mean I have to light the fire??!’

‘Why won’t the monk Listen to me!’

It had long since become tiresome and it was going to be an even longer night than usual if Bai Long Ma wouldn’t shut up. He was still going and the bark of the tree Sihua was sitting against was staring to dig into her shoulder blades.

“-if anything he should be serving us, especially since you’re the venerable Sun Wukong, perhaps we should—!”

Sihua slammed her journal shut to draw the pup’s attention. “You are right Yu Long, we will not be subject to sleeping upon the ground.” The pups face split with the force of his smile even as Tripitaka appeared ready to break his vow of nonviolence behind him. “Instead, with all your energy, you will take the first watch and I will sleep in the trees.”

The speed at which Tripitaka and Bai Long Ma traded expressions was dizzying. “Wukong is right Ao Lie,” the monk spoke as he lay out a thin sleeping mat, “with as much energy as you seem to have it would be prudent to put it to use instead of complaining.”

The ‘poor’ dragon pup turned red in the face and turned at the utterance of his true name. He almost tried to dispute the decision before Sihua ended the conversation by climbing her tree, a large willow that had yet to weep, and building a small nest. Bai Long Ma opened and closed his mouth no less than six times before he stomped his foot and acquiesced to the silence. According to their map they would reach a village by evening the next day and would need to get more rations now that they had a larger group, hopefully there wouldn’t be any trouble like some kind of pig demon or something.

Sihua waited until she saw Bai Long Ma give in to sleep before she pressed a hand to her stomach and whispered “please cubs, don’t become like Bai Long Ma, he isn’t a good role model.”

So recently, in my little head space sphere, I was thinking about ancient china and my Long Dragon, Jun Long and how his life probably was back in the day, enjoying being essentially the Imperial Emporer's personal go to weather guy.

And one of my errant thoughts was that Jun probably has siblings and one of them would be named Yu Long (Long being the universal name of all dragons in this concepted setting. and Yu means pleasant or playful. or Bug.)

And Yu Long is just kinda the polar opposite of Jun in the terms of looks and luck. Yu Long's dominion (basically which side of the area he calls his) isn't that great financially. He tries to make it rain but it always ends up not working as he plans and then he starts crying and everything FLOODS. He has small pox scars. How does a fucking DRAGON contract smallpox of all things? We don't know. that's just how shoddy Yu Long's LUCK is. Yu Long's the kind of guy who trips on a flat surface and startles himself with his own tail. The river that belongs to him (as most all dragons are associated with rivers.) is dirty and muddy and not very well suited for drinking or swimming because of all the run off from flooding polluting the river. Yu Long's the guy who has a perpetual cold and despite all the visits to the doctors or home remedies he tries, he's perpetually suffering congestion. Yu Long is the buttered noodle god dropped on the floor and forgot.

It's not to say Yu Long isn't beloved by the community he belongs to much like Jun Long-they're just horribly used to and desensitized to his incompetence. They've just learned to build their houses on stilts and put their possessions up high if they don't want to get them wet.
