Listen/purchase: Don’t Rat (Fuck ICE Vrsn) by Yuasa-Exide
2/20/25.
I ran across Yuasa-Exide "Information and Culture + Naturally Reoccurring" a while ago, but never gave it a full listen and then, poof, it was gone. Thanks to Gerard Cosloy's purchase it came back to my attention. This time I gave it a sustained listen and enjoyed each song.
The story of Douglas Busson's Yuasa-Exide is heartbreaking yet inspiring. While recovering from 2 spinal fusion surgery's Busson figured out how to play the guitar while lying down and recorded the first few Yuasa-Exide albums. The only way he could endure the pain of recovery was to distract himself with a blistering pace of home recording. And here we are the beneficiaries of the triumph of the human mind and spirit.
Yuasa-Exide recalls the 1990s pinnacle era of lo-fi recording. Yes, that means Guided By Voices. But really, the sound reminds me of GBV, but not always the melodies.
The Bandcamp page also mentions The Cleaners From Venus, Swell Maps and Xpressway releases. It sounds like Busson is located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (Minnesota). This is released by Round Bale Recordings (Mankato, Minnesota). And I love that the label gave us an econo-release. Two albums for the price of one!
