THEPHARAOHINLEATHER BIRTHDAY PARTY STARTER
Over the course of the last week or so the family had quietly and diligently prepared the festivities to take place across the day and through the evening of the eighteenth. Yugi found it ironic, near humorous, that Yami’s birth in particular fell so close to the ides of March. That aside it had been no small feat to prepare the venue.
An abandoned warehouse had been chosen. It was vast and empty with a concrete slab floor and high, narrow, windows like the portholes of a ship. The industrial structure pulled sound up like an auditorium and sat far away from clean streets and well policed suburbs. Why here? Why this? Because they were cheap? Yugi put it down to personal preference.
Yes, Yugi quite liked it because though drug dealers, homeless vagabonds and petty criminals would pass through it regularly it polished up quite nice. It was a place where the magically inclined could revel unmolested by man just as fairies had in isolated Irish moors. Grim had tirelessly scrubbed away rat faeces, pigeon feathers and cobwebs. The tables Thief had long ago cobbled together were re-purposed as long platforms for the food and the tiered birthday cake Heba had slaved over. Sarah and Kaiba had either with actual bottles or funds helped fill the coolers littered about with drinks and enough booze to make an elephant blush. Finally Yugi herself had filled old oil drums with wood and lit fires which illuminated the structure and only half warded off the winter chill. Those drum fires created odd, upward, light that cast moving shadows and imbued the mechanical like belly of the building with personality.
As the boys stole fresh snow from the street to pack into the coolers and a friend or two bickered about how to set up the sound system using the ugly, squat, generator they’d hauled in for the corner Yugi was at home. She had a dress prepared though not for herself. No tonight she would be in a suit and rabbit like Victorian mask saying her name was Arcane. Her dress, it’s accompanying mask, and her hair pins had all been devoted instead to making Arcane her double. Yes, just for tonight, Mister ArcaneLight would pretend to be Miss SeventhFracture and Miss SeventhFracture would pretend to be ArcaneLight. She looked forward to watching her disguised Anchor greet Yami’s guests and she…Well frankly she dreaded playing ice but she would, just for him.
It was a masquerade after all and, even with the sweet instrumentals playing, what was a masquerade without a little deception and mischief?
