For me Yule is a very complicated holiday. It’s not a holiday of hearth and home in the traditional way of blood relatives and it’s not a holiday of complete happiness.
For me it’s a holiday of chosen family, of broken homes and a band of misfits, of God’s of the fire and Gods of the ice. It’s a reminder of the rest of the year when we bled and cried just to get here, to where we are now. It’s a reminder that darkness and light go hand in hand.
It’s a time to celebrate what we’ve accomplished and dream for a better future. It’s a time to think about what we’ve lost, what we’ve gained, and what we’re still fighting for. Like everything else in my life it’s a chaotic balance of life and death, happiness and sadness, struggle and surrender.
I start celebrating in the afternoon before the sun goes down until dawn breaks. I light candles for all my Gods because they are family. I celebrate the sun, the moon, the earth, the frozen water on the ground, and the sweet smelling air around me warmed by softly burning fires lighting my room. I clean out things and memories I no longer need to make room for the new things and memories that may come in the new year.
As the wheel continues to turn remember that we cannot control what comes into our lives, but that we DO control how we react to these changes and what we do as people. We are not assigned family or actions, only circumstance. Merry Yule, I hope with the return of the light that good things may also come your way.
