now that it’s january i can finally share my submission for yuletide 2022! this year was my first time participating in the challenge and i had a blast getting to write for jennifer’s body. hope you guys enjoy my first foray into this fandom!

better creatures (jennifer check x anita lesnicki, jennifer’s body, rated: m)

“Come with me.” Needy’s voice rings out strangely in the dark night. She’s shivering, though whether that’s from the cold or from fear, Jennifer can’t tell. Is she here to kill her? Jennifer had figured she would be, eventually, for Chip. 

Jennifer wets her lips. “Where?” 

Needy huffs a breath, a cloud of white vapor spilling from her lips. “Just come with me, Jen.”

Jennifer’s fingers curl into fists. Needy hasn’t called her that in a while, and, well, if she were going to try and kill her, who was Jennifer to deny her that chance? She might even succeed, as weak as Jennifer was now. And yet Jennifer didn’t think twice about slipping into jeans and a sweater, pulling her limp hair into a ponytail to get the bedraggled strands out of her face, and leaving the house with only the vaguest notion that she might not be returning. It didn’t matter.

A lot of things didn’t seem to matter anymore, lately.

Happy Yuletide! I got two amazing gifts I need to rec. :)

The Geas (Flash Thompson/Kaine Parker, rated T, 13k)

A spell gone awry. A man he knows very little and likes even less. What happens when Scarlet Spider has Agent Venom in his space 24/7? Either they find a new way to relate or someone is going to meet some very painful consequences.

The tags say it all! Forced proximity but make it about agency! This is such a brilliant take on Kaine and his views on intimacy and romance and ownership and ugh it's so good. Thank you to my author for putting all my Kaine thoughts into this one fic, like, when I say it's exactly what I wanted, it's exactly what I wanted. Totally beautiful look at Kaine and Flash and there's also dreamsharing. I don't think I said either of those things were some of my favorite tropes but my author just knew. Go read it!

Meet Me at Our Spot (Johnny Storm/Peter Parker, rated T, 2k)

But once he knew who the man behind the mask was, there was no real reason to keep it up, was there? He could just — go hang out with Pete somewhere that wasn’t in the middle of the Hudson.

This combines two of my favorite Spideytorch staples, the Usual Place Christmas meetups and Johnny's time in the Negative Zone, into something totally new and original. It plays with Johnny's insecurities in a really interesting way and how Peter just gets him. I loved it so much. Thank you to my author!

So for the second year in a row, I wrote a Yuletide fic for The Goblin Emperor, or more precisely, the Cemeteries of Amalo spinoff series, about my favorite Sad Gay Elf Detective, Thara Celehar (and his romantic interest Hot Half-Goblin Opera Director Iäna Pel-Thenhior).

T-rated, 5770 words, tags include “In Which Thara Celehar Finally Gets Some Therapy,” “And a boyfriend.” But it’s really mostly about Thara finding some healing and comfort in the aftermath of the events of The Grief of Stones—and also discovering how many people care about him and consider him a friend, not least among them a certain Edrehasivar VII. I’m so glad redgear’s prompts gave me a reason to make Maia a part of this story, and bringing him and Thara back together was one of the highlights of the process of coming up with this story. Writing for this series is always a high-wire act of pastiche, from handling the titles and vocabulary and formal/informal speech registers to hinting at the complexity of the worldbuilding—not to mention making the first-person narration sound credibly like Thara’s in the books. That said, I’m really happy with how it turned out—and bowled over by the response so far. I’m hoping to write more for this fandom in the future, and not just when I get it as a Yuletide assignment.

Also, the inevitable finally occurred and I titled a fic after a lyric from The Mountain Goats. “Never Quite Free” is a song about recovering from trauma, about how things do indeed get better—but also how part of that means acknowledging you’re always going to be marked in certain irrevocable, indelible ways by what you’ve been through. It’s a song dear to my heart, and one that feels very right for Thara’s journey—both in this fic and in (what I hope is going to be) the arc of the series as a whole.
