Clara knows she isn't attractive, at least to most of the school population. She's taller than other girls, more muscular. Even more so than most of the boys, so of course they don't really pay attention to her and prefer smaller girls.
Thankfully, they're also too intimidated by Clara to really bother her. They saw her fight when defending another student, they know what she's capable of, so they stay away.
It's fine, Clara tells herself. She prefers other girls over men anyway.
The problem is, many girls don't want to date her either. She doesn't know why, because she kissed with some and they're clearly attracted to her, but just don't want to date her.
Clara wishes they could, because she would really love to live through the magic of highschool sweethearts and romance, but she has had no luck so far.
Until Blaire Wayne moves to Smallville. An heir to Wayne fortune from Gotham, Blaire starts living in her parents' estate near Smallville one summer, and starts high school in fall.
People gossip even before she enters the school grounds for the first time.
That she was expelled from other schools for drugs.
That she had a baby with an unknown father and that's why she's hiding in a small Midwestern town.
That she killed someone.
That she tried to kill herself.
Clara doesn't believe in any of those silly speculations, and she tries to discover what really happens on her own, but her little investigation gets her nowhere.
So she stops, figuring it's not her business anyway.
Despite all that gossip, Blaire instantly becomes popular. Who wouldn't want to be friends with a girl that's going to become a billionaire when she turns 18?
Everyone also wants to date her - girls and boys alike - and Clara is a little jealous.
The only issue is that Blaire has no interest in dating, or becoming someone's friend. She keeps to herself and is rather rude to those that try to befriend her too forcefully.
She reminds Clara of a cat that once wandered onto her farm and refused to be approached for weeks.
Blaire wears all black, even her make up is black, and ironically, that cat was black too.
And just like that cat, it takes weeks for Blaire to befriend anyone.
And surprisingly, it's Clara.
Maybe because Clara never tried too hard, she was just polite. Saying "hi" in the hallways, in the cafeteria, or when they sit together in one class.
Maybe because when Blaire had no choice but to sit next to her in the school library, Clara only smiled at her and didn't try to bother her with questions.
Or maybe because when Clara accidentally caught her crying in the restroom after classes, she didn't ask, didn't judge, just handed her some wipes and lent her an eyeliner and mascara so she could fix her make up.
Either way, Blaire approaches her one Friday after school, nervously playing with the strap of her bag.
"Are you busy, Clara?" she asks.
"No," Clara replies, more than a little surprised that Blaire spoke to her without being prompted by a teacher. "Can I help you with something?"
If it's possible, Blaire becomes even more nervous, and her pale skin turns pink with blush.
"You know, I've never actually been to Smallville," she admits, running a hand through her short hair. "Alfred, my butler, goes every week to do grocery shopping, but I never went with him. Maybe you could show me around? If you're not busy of course."
It isn't what Clara expected to hear, and she tries to not start smiling like a goof and scare poor Blaire more than she already is.
"I already told you I ain't," Clara reminds her, but Blaire still looks uncertain. "Sure, I'll show you around," she agrees, allowing herself to smile more when Blaire breathes out in relief.
The other girl nods. "Okay."
"It's a great town, you'll love it," Clara promises her as they go to retrieve their bikes from in front of the school. "How about we grab some food first? I know a great place!"
Years later, Clara likes to remember that little tour around town as their first date.
