YES. I messed up big time when I chose a pretty look over safety for my kid. And I made several risky mistakes!
Finding a truly transparent, cool-looking terrarium for such a small snake: with proper ventilation, a convenient lid, and ideal shape and size is VERY DIFFICULT.
This plastic box was the most acceptable option for me. At first, I really resisted the idea of making a home out of a shoebox. My kid was already the main hobo of the pet store! Out of all his siblings, only this little loser lived in a box with paper towels, while the breeders gave the other rat snakes mini-boxes and proper substrate.
I bought a pretty decent-looking, nice terrarium. Kept his original hide. But that's where the positives ended.
Ventilation. I thought I could fix it at first, but the plastic turned out to be too fragile, so I didn't risk it. The lid is literally mesh, and I was worried about drafts. The side holes don't really make sense either, since they're placed on the same level right under the lid. This makes it hard to set up a proper temperature gradient. I covered half the lid with cardboard, but it still didn't give ideal airflow. And I was seriously stressed over every single degree and humidity percentage!!
Thermometers. I didn't figure out the right placement right away and tried to stick them to the walls. Classic beginner mistake. I fixed it quickly, but I still feel bad that my son had to go through those experiments.
Artificial moss. I bought some dyed moss. The problem is, Yusik really loved it, but later I noticed that his whole skin had turned green. That was risky... The dye could've been highly toxic. Once I saw the stains on his head, I threw that crap out. What made it even worse? When this kid started digging around and all that dyed moss ended up in his water bowl. I'm such a clueless parent...
Humidity hide. It turned out to be way too big, so Yusik didn't appreciate it — he felt uncomfortable. Plus, the material is completely unsuitable for a humidity hide. In short, it was a waste of money at that point.
