‘Is this a comfortable position for you?’

‘Mmgfleh.’ Ann shifts her head against the crook of Yusuke’s shoulder, too tired to say anything else. It’s been a long day for them, and between the steady rumble of the train and the low, rolling quality to Yusuke’s voice, the battle to stay awake has already been lost.

At least Yusuke doesn’t mind. He’d stilled at first upon contact, more confused than disconcerted, but now he’s relaxed – and even oddly accepting – of being used as a temporary pillow.

Ann shifts again. Yusuke is quite tall and the angle makes it difficult to rest her head properly, but it’s nothing too terrible to deal with – wait – oh –

‘Here,’ Yusuke murmurs. Ann blinks up at him, jolting as she realises that her head is now pillowed in his lap and her legs are stretched out over the next seat. ‘I apologise for the sudden adjustment, but this seems to be a much better sleeping arrangement for you.’

‘You – ’ Ann flushes red. ‘Are you serious? We’re in public! My feet are totally going to hit someone at this rate, oh my god – ’ She makes to get up, but Yusuke keeps an arm snug around her waist.

‘Nonsense,’ he says. ‘There are very few commuters here at the moment.’ A quick glance around tells Ann that he’s right – it’s late in the evening, after all, and the only other person there is an old lady reading her newspaper. Is she listening in on their conversation? She’s smiling. Oh god. This is so embarrassing.

‘Ann.’ There’s a firmness to Yusuke’s tone that brings her back to the present. ‘This is perfectly alright. Please conserve your energy and allow your body to rest.’

Normally she would’ve protested a lot more, would’ve kicked Yusuke aside without preamble and stayed on the far end of the cabin for the rest of the ride, but between the lost battle to stay awake and the look of unwavering sincerity in Yusuke’s eyes, there’s little else to be done.

Ann can only concede defeat.

‘Fine,’ she mumbles, settling her head back into his lap with a huff. It’s just for a little while, and besides, it’s Yusuke. It has to be Yusuke. ‘Wake me up when we’re about two stops away, okay?’

Yusuke reaches up to brush a stray curl away from her face, soft and lingering, and even with her eyes closed Ann can hear the smile in his voice.

‘Of course.’
