Come join her adventure in this sci-fi western. Come join the future. Okay I think Zack may have something of a twisted mind. There is something absolutely interesting about the dichotomy between the futuristic city and the old west towns that populate the rest of the area. It almost feels like the haves and the have nots that have populated civilisation since time immemorial. That makes what we see feel familiar and comfortable while at the same time allowing the readers’ imagination run wild with their own thoughts on what they see. Zack really does write in such a way that is both thoughtful and exciting so that no matter which way you look there’s something new to discover. The way this is being told is sensational! The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. Watching Clem go through the events and seeing her act and react to the circumstances and situations not only helps move the story forward beautifully but it also highlights the character development as well. This is some great writing throughout the book and when we do see certain individuals we learn a lot more than you probably bargained for. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow. Zack has emerged as a voice in today’s world that deserves to be heard. He has ideas and can create these scenarios that capture the awe and wonder and transfers that to the reader in some quite marvellous ways. He also is gifted in the way he’s able to sequence the book so the flow feels natural and not scripted and that makes a difference in how the reader sees a story. Piotr’s work on the interiors is gorgeous, point blank period. He is one of the rare talents in the industry that doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. The way he’s able to utilise the varying weights and techniques of the linework to create this level and quality of attention to detail is monumentally dynamic. It isn’t just the detail we see in the characters either it is also in the attention paid to the backgrounds as well. The scenery helps in so many ways and how it works within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work is astounding to see as well. Whether it’s daytime or nighttime doesn’t matter because how we see the hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work with such aplomb. It isn’t easy to get those same shades and hues in both lights and make them feel as natural as if you were outside looking at them. This book is much better than any hype that surrounds it. Zack has found a passion project in this and the way we see that come through the work and by extension makes the real feel passionate about it is astonishing. Aftershock is home to the best of the best storytellers in the business and if you don’t know that by now I don’t know how to convince you.
