Zamor Lore

For those of you who are fans of Zamor, here’s some lore:

The Japanese script provides a more nuanced description of the curved blades wielded by the knights of Zamor. These blades are designed to honor winter and are crafted by the people of Zamor to be ritually offered to the god of winter, so that the deity may inhabit them and imbue them with the power of an ice storm. Their sorceries and battle arts, passed down through generations, could thus be considered heretical, for they derive from the worship of a powerful nature spirit.

That’s my interpretation of the use of 祀る, which can relate to ritual enshrinement, ritual offerings, or the worship of a spirit or god, honoring it. Their blades were designed to mimic the winds and functioned as vessels, offering themselves for cold powers to inhabit.

Hello! Do you know if there are any good biographies/sources/ or general information beside Wikipedia about Bengal-born french revolutionary Zamor? He seems very cool and it is a shame he is not more talked about, thank you!

Madame de Barry herself writes about Zamor on page 11-14 in volume 2 of her memoirs.

In volume 2 of Histoire du tribunal révolutionnaire de Paris: avec le journal de ses actes (1880) by Henri Wallon, page 224 and 231, we can read about Zamor during Madame de Barry’s trial in December 1793, as well as what it was he had to say during it.

I have however been unable to find any written material conserved from Zamor himself, when checking both Internet Archive and Gallica.

I was unfortunately also unable to discover any biography over Zamor. I did however find three fictional works where he serves as main character — rêve de Zamor: roman (2003) by Eve Ruggieri (can be read for free on Internet Archive), Zamor: Le nègre républicain (2016) by Ludovic Miserole and The Greatest Thing (2023) by Patti Flinn. But if there’s any factual value in these I of course don’t know… :(

So remember that Zamor sphere pack that came with (at the time) exclusive gold, silver, and gunmetal colors? Since this is Bionicle, there’s actual lore for these exclusive Zamors and the powers they possess! Gunmetal causes a target to be tracked via an energy pulse they give off, and silver binds the target to the nearest living being with an energy chain (Interesting how they’re both centered around capturing people)! These powers were listed only in the Bionicle Encyclopedia and have no known canon usage/wielders. By contrast, we did see an instance of a golden Zamor in the story; The one used by Hewkii to transfer Brutaka’s power back from Hakann and Thok. So Greg applied that to these golden Zamors as well by making them the same type.

Unfortunately, there’s no lore for the blue-green Sea Squids exclusive to this pack they were sold in; I guess the species just comes in different colors the same way animals do? I remember actually adapting this difference into my Bionicle RaE fanon for G2, explaining the color comes from absorbing a specific type of energy that they can now use, kinda like the Creeps from the Deep commercial (canonically a vision Dekar received from the Ignika) having a Sea Squid glow from lightstone energy Ehlek drained… Did anyone actually buy/use this pack, especially with how unpopular the squid launcher was as a gimmick? I want to see the color paired with a set like Takadox or Nocturn.

Zamor spheres were hollow crystal balls which could be filled with various substances to give them unique properties. These Zamor spheres in particular were filled with the same substance that makes up the Makuta's natural forms, Antidermis. Antidermis gave these Zamor spheres the power to turn their user's targets into mindless slaves. A power which was utilized extensively by the wicked Piraka on their quest for the Mask of Life.

I think we should do more with the knowledge that a Makuta can possess people as Antidermis; And I don’t mean just dead bodies. We know Teridax’s Antidermis made the Matoran of Voya Nui into mindless slaves, and they were fully alive when it happened, and afterwards too! Could any Makuta just leech off a bit of their essence to make a victim suggestible? It’s kind of like how a Makuta’s Kraata can infect Kanohi to control the wearer, but more direct… Just as using Antidermis is. And the only known cure is Energized Protodermis, and that’s IF the Makuta isn’t destined to transform (anymore)!
