As each day a memory is lost, your mind becomes what it's not. Maybe good, maybe bad, but always different. It's the change that matters.
Movies might tell you that you watch yourself become a monster in the mirror. They say that's why you can't look at yourself. That's not quite right, or perhaps you're thinking of the wrong mirror.
Truly, you watch yourself become a monster in the eyes of your friends and family. The fear on their faces. When they look at you and feel afraid, you can feel it, too, because you still care. You become afraid of yourself.
You may not be a fearful thing but you have built expectations into their minds. Your own mind changed when the memories left. You no longer remember what they expect, and you will become something new.
New is strange. New is fearful. The most fearful thing in the world is a twisted form of something familiar. It's because it makes them doubt their own sanity, whether they realize or not. Aside from new, it's unexplainable. It's terrifying.
You've deviated from what they expect of you and there's no way to return. There is no home.
