"Good morning, my dearest Zeph," Poe said, waltzing into the kitchen and nuzzling Zeph's cheek before kissing her gently.
"Mm, morning Poe," Zeph replied, smiling involuntarily at him. "Can you do me a favor seeing as -" she gestured with her chin as her hands, sticky with the biscuit dough she was kneading - "and locate the twins? They disappeared with the cat and I think they may have escaped outside."
Poe laughed and kissed her cheek, unable to help himself.
"Sure can."
Sure enough, Zeph was right - the sliding glass door that led from the living room to the deck was partially open, with enough room for two toddlers and a cat to squeeze through. Poe pushed the door open more and stepped outside, ready to call their names but stopped abruptly.
Laying in the dappled light on the warm deck boards was the scraggly Loth-cat Volya had rescued a few months ago, that was no longer scraggly and very happy, curled in the sunlight, and laying on either side were Ara and Shar.
Their chubby little hands were carefully and gently rubbing back and forth along Kitty's spine, whose purring was loud enough Poe could make it out from a few feet away.
"Hey, my babies," Poe said quietly, taking careful steps the remaining distance between him and his kids. Shar didn't move, too focused on the repetitive motion of pets, but Ara lifted her head and gave him a wide grin.
"Kitty sleepy," she told him. She sat up and clambered into his lap, babbling something in her little toddler talk about how Kitty wanted outside and wanted to be warm and wanted pets.
"Dada," she said seriously. "Kitty soft."
At this, Shar finally lifted his head and scrambled to sit up, though he didn't stop petting Kitty.

The twins stared up at them with wide eyes, clumsily clutching each others hands. Zeph knew that, truthfully, all she and Poe were to them were blobs of color, but they could hear their voices.
"Hi," she murmured, reaching to brush her fingertip so, so gently along Ara's soft, round cheek, and then did the same to Shar's similarly chubby face.
Tucked against his side, Poe squeezed her shoulders and kissed the side of her head, and hid his face there, no doubt battling off more tears.
Zeph had thought Poe would probably cry when the babies were born, but she hadn't anticipated her own wonderous tears, and Poe had been crying on and off the last twenty-four hours.
She didn't blame him. Their children really were a miracle, not just of life, as the old saying goes, but - a testament to Zeph and Poe and the fact that they survived - the fact that they lived.
