I just realized another way that the AWFUL shock death of Kamala Khan in Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man run could have been potentially avoided, and it actually involves a deep cut into the history of Marvel’s rival company DC!

Remember how the pages of Kamala’s death were leaked 2 weeks before the issue was released? Well I’m reminded of an infamous DC crossover event from the early 90s called Armageddon 2001, whose premise centered around a superhero becoming the future dictator Monarch. While the clues initially hinted towards Captain Atom becoming Monarch, the twist was actually somehow leaked to the press in advance (which in the pre-Internet age is pretty extraordinary…). Consequently, DC panicked and scrapped their original twist ending by instead making Hawk become Monarch (even though previous issues clearly stated that Hawk becoming Monarch was impossible), which is why Armageddon 2001 is almost universally reviled by fans…

So basically, I actually kinda wish that Marvel pulled an Armageddon 2001 when the leak of Ms. Marvel’s death occurred and the fan backlash was immediate. I.E. Marvel should have scraped their original plans and had someone else die instead of Kamala (preferably Paul, because WHO THE HECK IS PAUL?!).

Real missed opportunity there…
