Episode 1010: The Grimnir Gale!

Translator Notes:

I had to very loosely translate the first panel.  The term the Japanese script used was chuunibyou, which is short for chuugaku ninen byouki, or “Second-Year Middle-School Sickness”.  This is sometimes translated as “Eighth-Grade Syndrome” for English audiences, but a bit of research indicated that this wasn’t a widely used term, so I opted not to use it.  In brief, it refers to the way that a confused young teenager acts who’s going through puberty and has just discovered the concept of acting deep and mysterious.  “Acts super tough and pretentious” was the best way I could come up with to approximate the semantic idea behind the term.

Grimnir’s Japanese speech was super archaic and pompous, so I did my best to write his English lines in exactly the same sort of way, using old-timey vocabulary and grammatical constructions.

I didn’t have a great idea for how to translate “Allform Wind”.  The Japanese term was 万色の風, which I think is pronounced banshiki no kaze.  風 (kaze) means “wind”, so that’s straightforward enough, but 万 (ban) and 色  (shiki) both have a number of possible interpretations.  万 means “ten thousand”, but it can also mean “all” or “every”.  色 means “color”, but it can also mean “complexion”, “appearance”, “personality”, “type”, or any number of things like that.  Furthermore, this term doesn’t seem to appear in the official Japanese script for Granblue Fantasy itself, meaning that I had to get creative.  I believe the idea behind it was to describe wind of all kinds raging about, and “Allform Wind” sounded cool to me, so that’s what I came up with.
