Ok so its basically canon that zevlor will go back to reithwin with halsin in order to bury the remains of the tieflings and give them a proper funeral and happen to stay to rebuilt the city right? am I supposed to sleep with the picture of zevlor melancholically digging graves for the people he is convinced he failed with and is trying to make up for it one last time. Sedate me.
So I dont know if you do this and its totally ok if not but do you have any headcannons for Zevlor?? Because I LOOOVE how you write him!
Anon, I'm very sorry I sat on this ask so long. Holiday stuff, and finishing the next-to-last chapter of Nine Hells had all my attention, plus I wasn't totally sure what to say here. Short answer: Yes, I have a 10k+ word doc of Zevlor headcanons! But I think for the most part they're very similar to what other people have already written so I don't know that I have much 'new data', as it were, to contribute to the established science. Long ass answer: I did a read-through of my notes and here are the headcanons I have for Zevlor that either go against a popular interpretation or that I personally haven't seen anywhere. Not sure this is what you were looking for, but here you go anyway!
5 Zevlor Headcanons (last one is very NSFW so read at your own risk)
Childhood/Upbringing: I don't think Zevlor had any biological family he knew of or could remember. Probably orphaned early/at birth and likely left to one of Elturel's holy orders to raise, as opposed to an orphanage, which might indicate at least one noble born parent - a headcanon I like, even if there's literally no evidence for it except his accent. Received pronunciation doesn't make much sense for an enlisted sort of soldier, that's well-bred officer material (although in reality, I think it has more to do with the fact his character was originally a schoolteacher in Beta). The orphan thing I had to surmise to make his having no family name make sense, because that's maybe my greatest complaint in all of BG3. Most DnD universe tieflings (all tieflings literally everywhere except BG3? Prove me wrong?) give themselves last names if they don't inherit a family one. And that seems like such a paladin thing to do! Name himself Zevlor Oathborn or something like that even if he didn't have any sort of known parentage. I can't fathom why Larian, in all their efforts to prove Tieflings are totally just like every other race, wouldn't give even one of them a last name! It seemed so unlikely to me that in all my original drafts of Nine Hells I said fuck it and gave him one, but I chickened out in the final version because I worried it was just too far from canon 😓
Relationship Experience: A 50 something year old (also my headcanon) military man is going to have sexual experience, that's pretty much given. But the Hellriders are a Spartan-esque organization. Members are expected to put their cause first and their personal lives way, way second. And Zevlor, a ride-or-die Hellrider and oath-bound paladin to boot, is going to take that super seriously. So, I personally don't see him as ever having had an actual relationship. Maybe he fucked the same dude in the barracks two or three times? Maybe he had a inn-girl he visited once or twice a year for a bit in his youth? I can see that. But I think on becoming a commander, he would decide such indulgences were for lower ranked soldiers and he would basically devote himself to his job fulltime. Meaning by the time he meets Tav, it's been... a while. And I do think Tav would be the first person he was ever in love with. He's an 'all in' kind of guy, and he spends most of his life 'all in' for Elturel. So with Tav, I think he's doing a proper relationship for the first time, and as an orphan/lifelong soldier I doubt he had much experience even watching real relationships, which means all he has to fall back on as far as method is probably what he's heard in tales or read in books. Which makes his idea of romance, well, romanticized, idealised, and probably more than a little old-fashioned. Which, in turn, explains why I don't think he would jump into bed with Tav right away, even if that's what he's used to doing. He's very much a 'good things have to be earned and deserved' sort, and the idea that he can just be given demonstrations of love without putting in the work first (gifts, outings, etc) just feels initially wrong to him. Tav really has to work to convince him it's ok to just have sex since they're facing down the end of the world, but once things have calmed down, she would definitely let him backtrack and 'earn his claim' to her to make him feel more comfortable in their relationship.
Sleeping Arrangements (in a relationship context): I think Zevlovers are all agreed that Zevlor wants, and in many ways needs, to be a little spoon. But what gets overlooked is the long journey it would take to get him there. Because no high-ranking career officer/soldier/male is going to be able to articulate “hold me, I need to feel safe right now.” They are the ones who make other people feel safe. It's a comfort zone that becomes a compulsion. Is it healthy? Nope. Does it leave Zevlor stressed and strained in the long run, even in peace time? Yep. Does it make it hard to relax and make sleep less enjoyable/often difficult to achieve if there's no one around he feels like he is guarding? 1000% The brain business is done, everyone's about their lives again, it's Zevlor's first time since he was a child not sleeping in barracks or tents surrounded by people he might need to defend from harm at a moment's notice, and he finds he's actually sleeping worse than he did when he was on the road! Fortunately, Tav is a bard very good at reading people. She figures this out about Zevlor quickly and begins a mission to subtly disrupt improve his sleeping routine. It starts with actions, not a conversation. They’ll be reading together in bed. Zevlor will always tire first and put his book away, and since he can sleep through anything, Tav can keep reading by candlelight while he sleeps at her side. Or curled into her side, his head on her chest, to make it easier for her to run her fingers through his hair which she does so love to do. Then it’s a hop, skip, and a jump to falling asleep in Tav’s arms on the regular. And then eventually, even when it’s Tav drifting off to sleep on his chest first, it somehow turns in the night to him on his side, her arms around him, her breathing just behind his ear. He'll wake in the night to discover this, and initially feel a bit of consternation or prick to his pride, but he'll tell himself he doesn't want to disturb her, and maybe be just sleepy enough to admit to himself it does feel good so he'll allow it just this once. And then "just this once" is years later and he can't remember how he ever slept any other way.
Does love an audience (NSFW): The sex headcanon I will die for. Zevlor has learned propriety and discretion as method in both private and professional life. He is disciplined and has good manners. But he also has a deep-seated need to be externally validated. He is a man who wants to be seen doing what he's good at it. And there's no way that doesn't bleed into his sex life. He will tell himself early in his relationship with Tav to be on his best behaviour: which to him means little to no PDA beyond hand-kissing/arm-holding. But Tav is 100% going to pick up on this (the little smug smile he can't suppress when he catches someone staring at them when they're out together; the hand on the small of her back, that subtle sign of possession, when they're in a group with others), and, being no stranger to the eyes of the world herself, she is going to have so much fun drawing this side out in him. They'll be drinking at the Elfsong and friends/acquaintances/fans will arrive who want to join them. Not enough chairs? Tav will graciously give up hers and deposit herself in Zevlor's lap. This blatant, public sign that they're together will have him instantly hard. He knows Tav can feel it. But it doesn't stop her shifting every so often during the conversation, playing with the ends of his hair or the tips of his horns apparently absently. None of it is overdone - most people won't give it a second glance in a crowded pub - but it drives Zevlor to distraction. The first few times she pulls this stunt, he'll make an excuse for them to leave early and head home. Or, if he can't wait, upstairs. Or, the time there's no rooms available and Tav's teasing was extra underhanded and Zevlor's had one too many pints, into the dark of an adjoining alley. Where he'll endure one second of inner turmoil that he's reducing Tav to this, and Tav, skirts already hiked up to her waist, will breathe in his ear how much she wants to be reduced to this. And who is he to deny Tav anything she wants? He will fuck her up against the dirty brick wall. And if he registers the doubletakes of the occasional passersby, he can't pretend he doesn't really fucking enjoy them. He will make the effort to cover Tav's mouth (Tav is incapable of being quiet), but he doesn't stop or stop whispering in her ear the whole time, look what she's made him do, look how needy she is for him (which is the absolute limit of Zevlor's ability to be anything like degrading). They walk home after, and Tav will have to stop to greet one or two people on the way, and the knowledge that she's dripping his fluids down her leg the whole time has Zevlor has hard and ready to go as before as soon as they make it through their door.
City-boy or Nature-lover?: So I know Zevlor is often painted as a nature enthusiast, and I know he has lines about considering the Emerald Grove peaceful and wanting a clean start away from soldiering, but I'm sorry not sorry. That man is urban to his bones. Maybe he romanticizes the countryside after Avernus and Elturel's betrayal, but let's face it: he's that city guy who rents a cabin an hour up north 2x a year to 'get back to nature' and gets itchy at the silence by the end of 3 days. Which is not to say I don't think he can handle a rugged lifestyle: Hellriders see plenty of countryside and they stay on the move. Zevlor's got at least a few points in survival and animal handling (Hellriders are mounted cavalry) for sure, but points in nature? I don't see it. I think to be happy in the long run, he'd need to be somewhere like Rivington - outskirts enough that everyday city life isn't triggering Elturel-related PTSD episodes, but still definitely within the bounds of civilization. He's not a loner. His entire life and has been spent in close-knit community. He needs regular social interaction, preferably the sort where he feels like he's serving a purpose or participating meaningfully. Maybe he dabbles in temple charity work, does some training for the Watch? There's no way he can make a livelihood out of farming (when has he had farming experience?) but I can see him thinking he could take up farming and being bored with it in less than a season. But running a ranch on the other hand... Think about it (says Tav). After the brain battle, the stables outside Baldur's Gate proper where traders' horses and the Flaming Fists' mounts have to be stalled when they enter the city are wrecked. And Tav has Arfur's money and knows a good investment opportunity when she sees it. What she doesn't know is the first thing about horses. Good thing she's sleeping with seeing someone who does! It's a ploy Zevlor sees through in a minute, and he spends maybe 2 minutes lamenting that he has to rely on Tav's charity yet again, but he lets himself be persuaded. And it's the job that sticks.
Could I request headcanons for Wyll, Rolan, and Zevlor react to being stuck in close proximity with gn crush?
Warnings: None!
Notes: These may be a little short/uneven, but these were so cute to write!! Anon, you've become such a prominent asker, that I'd love to give you a nickname of some sort, if you're comfortable with that! <3
My requests are currently open! My pinned post (found here) contains both a list of characters I write for, and a masterlist! Original character list - please request for these too!
Wyll
Wyll is a gentleman about the whole situation - or at least he tries to be. He gives you as much space as he is able to, even though he's squishing himself into a corner, he's more than happy to do that so that you're comfortable.
He tries to keep up conversation with you, to try and distract from the somewhat uncomfortable situation; mostly mundane questions, like 'What's your favourite...' or 'Have you ever...'
It's also partly to distract you from the fact that his cheeks are burning hotter than the hells. Who'd have thought it'd be easy to fluster the Blade of Frontiers, even if it were only slightly, by being so near to him?
He cannot take his eyes off of you. Not even for a moment. He tries, at first, but finds it astronomically difficult, and eventually just gives in. He loves gazing at you - your presence brings him such peace, even in such a compromising position such as this.
Once the two of you are found/make your way out of the confined space, Wyll apologises - even though it was not his fault - and offers to make it up to you at some point, by however you see fit.
Rolan
Rolan is entirely speechless. He cannot find the words to say anything to you, not even a half-handed snappy quip. His eyes rarely meet yours, and are rather more often aimed off to the side, or somewhere above your heads. It's... Quite awkward.
You try anything to break the silence between the two of you;
"Can you move your leg, please, Rolan?" Followed by a quiet shuffle as Rolan tries to move a little bit further from you but still remain comfortable. It is of little use on either front, but he tries.
Any question of "how are you feeling?" Or "You okay?" is met with either complete silence, or a quiet grunt of acknowledgement.
Rolan doesn't know what to do, he's never been in a situation like this before - much less a situation where he can't find the words to express himself. His heart is pounding against his ribcage, harder than he can recall it ever being in his life. He's entirely tense, and he has no idea what to do; his normal confident facade has completely crumbled away, leaving little besides anxiety, and a slightly fuzzy feeling in the pit of his stomach whenever you speak.
The first chance he gets after the pair of you can separate, he all but disappears from view - for several hours. You had wanted to talk to him about it, but couldn't find him anywhere.
Eventually you do find him, but as soon as you bring up the situation, he turns his gaze from you;
"I... Would rather not dwell on the situation... If it's all the same to you." He's just too flustered still to be able to process any of it.
Zevlor
Zevlor is constantly asking how you're feeling. "Are you sure you're well?" followed a few minutes later with, "Is there anything you need? ... Yes, I am aware I can't go and get anything, but I'm sure you understand the sentiment..."
He constantly asks you if you're alright, comfortable, etc. Neither of you know how long you're going to be stuck in this situation, so is completely understanding of the constant need to shuffle to keep your limbs from going dead. This being said, he'll always tell you if he's going to try and move himself, just so that he can try not to kick you, and you can brace yourself just in case of this outcome.
He tells you of his time in Elturel before it's descent into Avernus, his time as a Hellrider, all sorts. He finds it very easy to share things with you, since he's so sweet on you - it would usually take some probing for anyone to get that kind of information out of him. But, since he would like to establish more of a relationship with you, he's willing to part with some of it.
Once the two of you are out in the open again, Zevlor double checks that you're okay.
"I would have hoped to have had some of those conversations in a more... Traditional way. But, I suppose, one cannot deny the deft hands of fate, hm?"
For the emoji ask game: ❤️ for family headcanons for zevlor and dammon? This can be for either past family in Elturel or what the future holds for these two sweet boys c:
Thank you for the ask!!
Zevlor:
Back in Elturel he always put his work ahead of personal matters. Sure, he had a fling here or there but that man was absolutely married to his job.
His fellow Hellriders were his family unit. I don't think he has any blood relatives, and likely grew up as an orphan. He has some uniquely infernal features, so it's possible he's actually a first generation tiefling (one parent being a Cambion and the other a mortal). This doesn't really impact anything, it's just a fun detail I like to think about 😊
Anyway, that's why the Hellriders became so important to him- they were his whole world for so long. Their sudden betrayal and rejection once Elturel was returned from the Hells was completely devastating.
Post game, once he's settled back in Rivington/Baldur's Gate I think he'd be much the same way. If he does end up reestablishing the Hellriders and focusing on training the next batch of heroes then he'd consider that group his new family.
Buuuut if a certain wizard named Tav happened to wriggle her way into his life then he'd end up with an extended family including all of the tadpoled gang and maybe a tiefling baby or two. (Okay, there would ABSOLUTELY be a baby or two.)
He definitely loves kids, from how fiercely he defends them and how furious he is at Anders for putting them in danger back at the grove.
He might worry and fret that he's too old to be a father, but tieflings have a slightly longer than human lifespan so he'd for sure live long enough to raise his children with love and enjoy a gaggle of grandbabies too.
He weeps the first time his baby kicks btw, and when he holds them for the first time, when they laugh for the first time, when they use the toilet for the first time....just imagine him going into full snot bubbling sobbing every time they do anything for the first time, alright? He loves them all so much and he can't believe he actually gets to experience so much joy.
Dammon:
Dammon doesn't mention having any family back in Elturel. As far as I can tell, the only things he mentions about that place is that he was a tinsmith before it fell and then he studied infernal machinery while captured in the Hells to survive. He doesn't seem to mention losing any family members in the fall, so I assume he didn't have any to lose.
In my headcanon, he only had one tiefling parent (his mom) and his dad was a regular human and this is why he doesn't have the black sclera of the other tieflings. I also think he was an only child and raised solely by his tiefling mother. I dunno, that man drinks alot of Respects Women Juice and being raised by a single mother fits that pretty well, you know?
Anyway, his mother died when he was young, probably when he was only 12 or 13. Instead of being sent to an orphanage, he was old enough to be accepted on as an apprentice by the local tinsmith and that's where he stayed until Elturel fell.
Now, post game: Dammon screams breeding kink. I don't know why, I don't know how, but to me that is his vibe. He will have an entire brood of tiefling babies with his chosen partner. If they can be pregnant, he'll make sure they are. If they're infertile or are AMAB then he'll just really really really enjoy creampies, and they'll adopt a bunch of kids instead.
Either way, this man has a huge family in Baldur's Gate.
He'll wait until his blacksmith business is firmly established first, though. He's known what it's like to lose a parent young, and he wants to make sure he has enough free time to really enjoy raising his children and making precious memories that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Imagine: Tav and Zevlor having a child (whether adopted or biological) and astarion is living with them as the sassy gay uncle.
Authors notes: This was supposed to be a shitpost but I just kept typing lmao. I will not be taking questions at this time.
Once the Elder Brain is defeated, you and Zevlor offer Astarion a place to stay. You know Astarion has been through enormous hardship and you don't wish for him to be thrusted into his freedom alone. He won't admit it, but he is very thankful to be able to stay with someone he is familiar with; especially when its day and he can't go outside.
After a year or so of living together, you discover you are pregnant (or discussing the logistics of adopting a child.) Zevlor, an older man who has never had a child of his own, becomes incredibly anxious. One night, in the privacy of the bedroom you two share, he expresses his concern about having a vampire around the baby. "You know I'm not one to judge.. but-" your partner exhales and pauses for a moment. "you're sure its safe to have a baby around a vampire?" You take Zevlor's hand in your own and give it a reassuring squeeze. You explain to him that Astarion is not a bad guy and how he was forced into being a vampire. "You are overthinking, Zev'. I know its difficult.. but please, trust me." You whisper. Zevlor sighs and with a soft smile, he agrees.
Once the child is born your vampire housemate is drawn to the puny creature; tiptoing into the nursery one night to peek over the bassinet as it sobs tiredly. For a moment, he feels awestuck at just how vulnerable the newborn is. Tiny rounded features with softly pointed ears and a teifling tail that is no thicker than a quill. Astarion speaks to the babe quietly, trying his best to keep it from waking it's exhausted parents. "Shhhh little one, its alright." He coos. After a moment of gentle shushing your child stops crying, finding the elf's gentle voice and the soft glow of his ruby eyes soothing. Immediately Astarion feels an unfamiliar warmth spread across his chest; its as if his undead heart is melting straight through his ribcage. He sighs before pulling up a chair and taking a seat next to the cradle. "I suppose its not as if I have anything better to do." he thinks to himself, trying his best to avoid the realm of possibility that he cares for the infant. In the following days, you mention offhandedly to Astarion that the baby has stopped crying at night. Zevlor reiterates you, saying how great it feels to finally get a full nights sleep. Astarion scoffs, giving a quick "Thank gods" before changing the subject.
However, as the years begin to pass, Astarion and your toddler become close. Much to your surprise Astarion starts to volunteer himself to watch your child whenever you or Zevlor express the desire to 'get away'. Although you knew Astarion was safe for your child to be around, you never figured he would actually have genuine interest in them. After all, he was only a close friend. He didn't have to concern himself with your child if he didn't want to and you made sure he knew that. But Astarion can no longer hide behind his usual facade of indifference and arrogance; his affection for your child is slowly becoming evident. Sometimes, Astarion will string himself along the sofa with a wine glass in one hand with your child being supported in the other. "I don't think your mother would appreciate it if I let you have a taste, my dear," he would say, holding his glass to the side as your child reaches for it. "Now, on the otherhand, if I were in charge.."
One afternoon while preparing lunch, you start to hear giggling coming from the hall's entryway behind you. As a protective mother of a michievious child, your interest is piqued. After a moment of thought, you decide to stop what you are doing and investigate. You dust the flour off your apron and stride down the hall, your mind beginning to race with all the possibilities of what your child could be getting into. The noise gets louder and louder as you walk until you approach your child's bedroom. You halt, pressing your ear to the door to listen for a moment but you are unable to make out any string of words. You twist the handle and your eyes widen as you open the door. Before you is Astarion, sat on the floor, with a feather boa around his neck. His wrist is pointing downward and his are fingers spread as your child is holding his pale hand by the knuckle. Upon further investivation you see that your child is painting Astarions nails a glittery black with comically crude level of precision. Astarion slowly turns his head over to you, his eyes half-lidded with mock offense. "Do you mind? I've waited all month for this appointment so you'll just have to come back later. Isn't that right (Your childs name?)" Astarion flashes you a faint reciprocating smile before turning back to your toddler.
If you ask Astarion how he feels about your child he will be very vague with his answer. "Oh, (your childs name?) Cunning little thing isn't she/he. Honestly, I didn't think I met anyone more stubborn than you until you decided to have kids with a tiefling commander." In truth, he absolute adores that kid. If anyone were to make the mistake of trying to lay a finger on your child he wouldn't hesitate to slit their neck.
Both Zevlor and you completely trust Astarion with your child at this point; even considering making him a godfather at one point. If you do decide to make him a godfather, he will get choked up; trying his damnest not to cry as all the emotions he has tried to hide for so long come crashing down.
Can I request headcanons for Dammon, Rolan, and Zevlor react to his gn crush accidentally confessing to him?
Dammon, Rolan and Zevlor If Their Gender Neutral Crush Accidentally Confesses To Him Headcanons
Note(s) : The reader isn't Tav or durge they're just sort of a random person, I don't think the race is ever specified (correct me if I'm wrong) and neither are any described features or their class.
I'm not too knowledgeable of Dammon, Zevlor and Rolan's character in BG3 and I'm so sorry if the characters are wrong.
This is a mix of random general relationship headcanons as well as the random confession.
Dammon
He's all about outwardly caring for those he loves and he understands that love can come in many ways, he had a strong love for you before you had even confessed aloud, a mix of platonic and romantic feelings that he would showcase by doing tasks for you.
Whether he gained his crush first or you did doesn't matter in his eyes. What matters to him is that he doesn't know if you liked him back for quite a while, not until you had confessed that is. Dammon's not the type of man to make wild guesses about romance, even if you're more affectionate he doesn't think anything of it because some people are just like that with their friends and he thinks that it'd be presumptuous to assume.
He decides to eventually try and court you by making you small items or helping you as much as he could with his blacksmith job, things like necklaces, bracelets, maybe even armour, whatever you prefer, really.
Dammon isn't a fan of the typical Tiefling courting rituals, they're the same as humans but with violent and sarcastic speech, along with playful teasing and pushing their object of affection around. Of course, he won't judge if you do that to him, he can take teasing, but he much prefers to show his love through affectionate actions and words.
When you confess to him he gets more excited than embarrassed or flirty, he adores you and to know that you feel the same way as he does gets him a little giddy. He won't even realise that this could be embarrassing to you or even uncomfortable, straight away asking if you'd like to go on a date or be a couple. He does apologise after he realises how forward he's being though.
Rolan
In a relationship Dammon is very much someone who shows his love through acts of service, he'll craft things for you, help you with your job(s) and even just random tasks you might not want to or be able to do by yourself.
Sometimes he'll make random pieces of jewellery, he says that it doesn't matter if you want to wear them all the time, just as long as you like them. He accepts any gifts even if they're not something he likes, he can find a way to make it practical.
Dammon loves to tease you about your shy confession, in public and private. Unless you directly tell him you don't like it he'll randomly bring it up during conversation, when you're being cocky or teasing him it's an easy and fairly cute memory he can use to make fun of you.
Cooking is something that's interesting for the both of you, I don't think that he'd be too good at cooking or baking, not so horrible that he'll burn down a house, but not really good enough that you'd be able to have a lot of his food. Don't get him wrong, he'd love to learn, but he does prefer to have you cook while he gets ingredients and helps with any part of it that doesn't require anything that requires experience or talent in cooking.
His cuddles are very shifty, I don't think he likes to stay still for long and so you'll constantly be switching positions and he'll tend to play with your hair or hands if you let him. He might roll you around so you're laying on top of him, he's on top of you, you're sideways and hugging him, or he's hugging you, it generally just depends on how fidgety he feels on that day.
His kisses are short, he likes to give a small peck to your lips every few moments. Whether you're busy with your work or he is with his blacksmith work, then boom, kiss out of nowhere on your cheek or neck, he loves to catch you off guard and laughs whenever you get surprised by them.
Rolan personally doesn't do the typical tiefling courting strategy, of course he's sarcastic, but he's not going to be spewing out any violent speech when it's supposed to be a romantic hint to his feelings toward you.
His reaction would mostly depend on how it happened, and I can mainly see it going a few ways. Either A, you accidentally blurt it out during a conversation directly to him, or B, he overhears you talking about your love for him in some way, maybe going over a confession you're planning with a friend or you're just ranting about how much you like him.
If you blurt it out during conversation he's certainly surprised, but he is wondering if it's some sort of joke even if you're not that type of person. He will absolutely ask if Lyla or Cal put you up to this. Whereas if he overhears you he's much more likely to believe it's genuine, and he won't strut over while the other person is still there, he'll wait until you're done with the conversation and then strut over.
Whatever the way it happens, he will a hundred percent tease you about it. Nothing too heavy and it's mainly a ploy to confirm that you do in fact like him, just so he can make sure the situation is correct and he's not just assuming. He'll just outwardly say things like 'So, you have feelings for me?', 'a birdie seems to have told me about your feelings.', etc.
When you confirm you do in fact have romantic feelings for him he's over the moon, of course he won't outwardly show it and attempts to act suave, he's failing miserably and stumbles over one or two words at first, with false cocky arrogance and deepening his voice to try and make you more embarrassed than he is. Although, if you look down at his feet you can see that his tail is swishing back and forth.
In a relationship he's a mix between awkward and suave, he loves to tease you but if you tease back he gets huffy and storms off, not because he's angry, but because he's just so embarrassed. Especially if you do it around his siblings, Cal and Lia will help you make fun of him but he won't forgive you, unless you give him a kiss or gift him a new book and then it's history.
Rolan will sometimes remind you of how you so forwardly and awkwardly confessed to him to try and make you embarrassed, whether or not if you actually bite back or not doesn't matter, but he loves to do it when you flirt with him first. Oh, you think you've caught him off guard? Well, here's his ultimate trap card! Unless you're not embarrassed by it, then he's stuck trying to remember some other event that could make you embarrassed.
Zevlor
He's not too great at cooking but he can absolutely try for you, he's better at baking because of the strict step by step instructions, but for cooking where it mainly relies on taste and altering recipes he can struggle a little. Rolan does that cute thing if you like to cook or bake where he wraps his arms around you from behind and gives you a lil' kiss.
His cuddles are very 'bear hug' like, when you're spooning him he always asks you to wrap your arms around his waist and push yourself against him fully, he adores the closeness and comfort of it. When he's spooning you he does the same, arms around your waist, his face buries in your neck, making sure to position his horns away from your face. He prefers cuddling in bed and laying down rather than sitting up or on the sofa, the sofas smaller so it makes it harder to get comfortable in his opinion.
Rolan's kisses are always short and sweet, gentle and usually he'll give two or three pecks in a row because he can't get enough of you. Sometimes he'll kiss you for longer or more passionately, usually if one of you is upset or had a long day and just needs one another to relax.
So, Zevlor's not exactly the most confident or well sought after in the romance department. His age shows on his face and many people seem to be turned off by it, of course there's the whole issue with his past that many tieflings dislike him over, which they make painfully clear.
Although of course, one man's trash is another's treasure, that's where you come in. You both express interest in one another, if you don't catch on due to differences in culture, a general misunderstanding or complete obliviousness, that's up to you. But Zevlor does try to court you.
Regardless of the fact that he's single and has been for a while, he still values romance to some part. Even though it's not to the point that he actively wishes for a relationship or is miserable outside of one.
Overall, Tiefling courting rituals are similar to human courting rituals, but with a lot more grim gallows humor they use to cope with being shunned in most societies that you might not be comfortable with. In Tiefling spaces a common dark joke is 'The fastest way to a man's heart is to either make it laugh it up, or cut it out of him.' If you are a Tiefling, or perhaps from a culture or a specific race that has similar courting rituals to a Tiefling, then he will most likely just stick with what he'd normally say. Nothing too intense, but definitely things that would make a stranger unaware of these traditions to raise a brow.
If you're a non Tiefling he might try to dial back what he would typically do to court one of his own race, in his years he understands that many races or cultures will show love through kind actions, but for Tieflings, courting is all about sarcasm and being a bit more 'violent' verbally. But, if a Tiefling didn't like you then they wouldn't pick on you.
Many Tieflings in the grove are already, painfully so, aware of your little crush on the old Tiefling man. Whether it's because you've talked to them about it or because you're just so obvious, gossip can spread like a wild hellfire, everybody will know even if only one person does.
He most likely had one or two flings in his time, but to hear someone so suddenly admit that they have feelings for him is rather new, and, let me just say, I think he would have some clue before you even said it out loud. Zevlor would never outright think 'they love me', but perhaps would be under the impression that you admire him in some way, especially with how many tieflings try to hint to him that you do love him.
I don't think he would even attempt to court you if he didn't think you'd be at least a little interested.
Obviously if you're reading this you most likely want Zevlor to reciprocate your feelings and accept your confession, which he does, his confession back isn't blunt per se but he definitely gets his feelings across without mincing any words.
In a relationship he's a little awkward at first, but definitely not shy. It's mostly because it's been a while since his last lover but he also wants to make it work with you, but after a few weeks he really does begin to settle in. He'll suggest activities to strengthen your bond, like cooking meals for each other and the other tieflings, training with weapons or fighting styles either one of you might not be perfect with or against, and sometimes just taking a stroll around to admire nature.
Zevlor will adore it if you bite back with equal sarcasm, he is never outright rude, especially if he knows you can't handle it, but he does love a good playful back and forth.
I don't think Zevlor would ever tease you about your awkward and sudden confession in public, maybe with a few close friends of yours or his, but it's mainly when you two are alone and it's usually just if you tease him first. It's a fun little inside joke between you two that you can always find humor in.
Zevlor's great at cooking that can give you energy and also taste good with minimal ingredients, it's nothing spectacular that you can eat thousands of plates full of, but they're always able to give a pep in your step. He, however, isn't too good at baking, and so if you like to bake then he appreciates some lessons when either of you have the time.
I think he'd be rather awkward and stiff if you ever cuddle for the first few times, after a while he does learn what you both like and how to position himself to be comfortable for each other, but he feels very cumbersome especially if you're laying down. Zevlor prefers to cuddle on the sofa just sitting next to each other one arm around another's waist style.
His kisses are passionate and like the movies, that's the best way I can describe them. He wants you to know how much he loves kissing you and so he takes your breath away every time, if either of you are busy or in a rush he will give a small peck to your cheek as to not make you dawdle.
Hi! Could I ask for hcs of Zevlor being a father figure for fem!Tav?
Absolutely! I do primarily write these lists in the second person, but if any pronouns are mentioned, I'll go ahead and use ‘she/her.’
The timing for this request is a bit funny to me, because the headcanon request following this is for Zevlor in a much different context. 🤣
I have a really bad habit of using the plot of BG3 as a framework for my headcanon lists, so kind of like what I did before, I have general headcanons, and then I have a scenario driven list.
NOTE: she/her pronouns are used for Tav in this list.
Zevlor as a Father Figure for Fem!Tav
General headcanons
Zevlor was a commander who watched over plenty of young recruits. He mourned those who died and celebrated those who climbed the ranks. He acted as a mentor for many of them, but he never would have thought of himself as a father figure.
You are a bit different.
He easily falls into the habit of asking if you have eaten or if you need something to drink.
He ultimately wants to make sure that you can survive on your own, because then he feels like he has helped you in a meaningful way.
He has a hundred hidden skills, like sewing, and plenty of patience to impart that knowledge to you.
But he also thinks he is doing you a disservice if he doesn't teach you those skills.
So, yes, he's going to mend the tear in your cloak, but he's also going to make you follow along and mend a smaller tear.
Will grin ear to ear when you perfect a whip stitch.
Zevlor feels the most accomplished when he can teach you something, but he also has to fight the impulse to offer up useful information at every given opportunity.
Watch him struggle to not point out forageable mushrooms.
He will try in a very roundabout way to teach you what is forageable because he will be damned if his chil—no, this young adventurer—can't feed herself.
So the day you visit him with a perfectly dressed rabbit has him tearing up.
He doesn't expect you to be a warrior like him. He would never impose the difficulties of that life on anyone. But he does want to make sure that you can defend yourself.
If you choose to pursue the life of a warrior, he'll listen to you talk about your victories and your hardships. Should you ask for advice, he will offer it.
He isn't going to be the sort of person to give you unsolicited advice (though he will feel like he is dying if he thinks he can help you work towards a solution and you don't ask).
And, perhaps because you have sought his counsel when it comes to training as a warrior, and because he has taken an interest in not only your growth as a warrior but also the social aspects, you do find it easy to confide in him.
You might initially feel bad for venting about something, but Zevlor assures you he doesn't mind.
He soon becomes your closest confidant.
He will ask if you want advice or if you just want to talk things out. But regardless, he safeguards your secrets with the devotion one can expect of a paladin.
Zevlor isn't the sort of person to outright say “I dislike this idea” or “I dislike so-and-so,” but he does that patented mouth twist/pucker when you mention said idea/person.
“I get the sense that you don't like ___”
“Hmm. I suppose I'm not too fond of how reckless they can be. You'll have to forgive an old man for worrying.”
Also, he is absolutely, 100% the father who will say “I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.” And if he doesn't say it, he still conveys it with the parent-patented ‘face.’
He won't lie and pretend he isn't protective of you.
If he feels that you have been wronged deeply and irreparably, it's going to take everything in him to not strike out on your behalf.
Everything.
But he also knows that he has taught you to act with a level head, and if he were to respond in a way that runs counter to what he has tried to instill in you, then what was the point?
Maybe it's because he is a Paladin of Helm, or maybe it's because he found his daughter in the last place he'd thought to look, but he wants to shield you from all harm.
He has to come to terms with the fact that he can't always protect you. And the realization nearly destroys him.
But it's in that realization that you mean so much to him that gives him pause.
And he realizes how proud he is of you, and how he wants to remain a part of your life.
Assuming that you want Zevlor to remain in your life, then he will be there for you at every single important juncture (and all of the points in between).
He's there for every heartbreak.
And he's there for every victory.
In everything but blood, he is a father to you.
He is there when you need to make home repairs, ready to offer a helping hand.
He is there at the first sign of trouble
He's there when you need to cry or be angry
And he wouldn't choose to be anywhere else
And when all is said and done, when the storms have passed and the world is quiet, he looks at you and says, “For what it's worth I'm proud of you.”
Scenario-driven Headcanons: Following Game Events - Zevlor as a Mentor and then a Father-figure
Zevlor never expected to serve as a parental figure in any capacity—least of all for an adventurer who stumbled into his path during one of the most stressful times of his life.
But something about you makes him feel paternal.
Maybe there were aspects of yourself that reminded him of when he was a newly recruited Hellrider—unsure of the world but desperate to prove himself all the same—that made him feel that he could, perhaps, act as a mentor to you.
At first, he acts as more of an advisor and a teacher. If you mention in passing that your traveling party is heading to one location or another, he’ll offer to review maps of the area with you. He has done some scouting around the Grove, so he’ll make suggestions about what to avoid and what routes were safest.
If you run any training drills, Zevlor will watch from a distance. He won’t offer feedback immediately—not unless he notices that you’re getting frustrated or that something in your technique creates a lethal opening for your foes. Otherwise, he will wait for you to ask him his thoughts.
He’s also more than content to train with you. He’s strict, but he is a patient teacher. Though he is usually reserved and level-handed with his counsel, the one thing he will never hold back on is your form while training. If he lies to you about that, then he fears that he is sentencing you to death or a serious injury.
But as time goes on, he becomes more aware of your tells—he knows when you aren’t eating or sleeping well. And though he usually wouldn’t pester someone whose health didn’t directly impact the overall safety and well being of the other tieflings, he can’t help but worry about you. He knows that you’re stressed about something (you did come to the Grove in search of a healer, after all), but he doesn’t know what that might be.
So, initially, he might broach the topic by asking if there is enough to eat on the road. He might offer to patch up your blankets or your tent if there are any notable tears.
But if those gentle questions/offers don’t get much in the way of results, he will ask you if you are taking care of yourself.
After training with you, he’ll make a point of fetching you a bowl of stew and seeing to it that you eat a few bites.
Though making sure you get rest is trickier, he will start to ask if you are sleeping enough. He feels like he is dangerously close to crossing a line, but he is worried.
He might not fall apart if you return to the Grove injured, but he won’t tolerate you not getting immediate medical attention.
After you defeat the goblins, Zevlor is practically beaming. He realizes that this is more than just relief over you being alive and the path being cleared for the refugees—he is proud of you.
He won’t claim to have played a role in your growth as a person. More than likely he’ll joke and say that he just made sure that you were holding the right end of a sword.
If you thank him for his guidance, he’ll refocus the discussion to your achievements.
He asks that you be careful on the road to Baldur’s Gate, and he’ll wish you safe travels.
So imagine how he feels when you find him trapped in the Mind Flayer colony.
Not only is he now dealing with the guilt over the Absolute invading his mind and having him urge the other tieflings to surrender, but now he sees you, the young adventurer who put their trust in him.
And that is enough to wreck him.
He wants to beg your forgiveness for not upholding this image of justice and valor, for perhaps going back on the morals that he conveyed to you whilst he mentored you.
If you respond with kindness, he will think he is undeserving. He will try to reject your forgiveness. But he won't deny the sense of pride that burns in his chest. He may have not played a role in your upbringing, but to know that he helped guide a warrior who possessed a moral compass that allowed for forgiveness? Especially for him? It makes him want to try again.
If you respond from a place of hurt/betrayal, he will accept how you feel. He won't flinch away if you berate him or yell at him. After what happened in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, how can he? He is now an Oath Breaker. He has lost everything. Perhaps he should have seen that he would fail as a mentor too.
But he wants to try again. He wants to redeem himself. It might not be possible, but he wants to strive to fill the image that you created of him in your mind. He might never attain it, but he's going to do his damnedest.
Regardless of how you respond, Zevlor implores you to take care. He doesn't care what happens to him, but the thought of you dying rattles him.
After Ketheric is defeated and everyone gathers in the throne room, Zevlor will observe from the shadows.
He doesn't make himself known to anyone. He just wanted to make sure that you were alive before he moved on.
And with the knowledge that you and your companions survived, he departs for Baldur's Gate.
He is proud of you. And he is so, so scared.
So, within Act 3, as far as I have observed/read, Zevlor doesn't reappear until the final battle (assuming you saved him in the Mind Flayer colony).
But I'm taking some liberties here.
After what happened in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, Zevlor is too ashamed to be around you.
But he is also so, so worried.
He knows you're a capable warrior. He spent weeks training you.
But suddenly that training doesn't seem like enough. Why couldn't he have urged you to stay for a few more hours that one day? He might have noticed that your swing was a bit too wide or that you left your right side vulnerable when you feinted that one time. Why the hells didn't he take the time to help you perfect your technique?
Perfection might not save you from all threats, but it gave you a better chance of survival.
Needless to say, he lays awake most nights gripped with anxiety.
Are you actually alright? Have you been injured?
He doesn't have a lot of money to his name, but he spends what he does have reading the newspaper, coveting whatever tidbits of information about you is printed that day.
He quietly celebrates your victories, and he mourns your losses from afar.
He decides one evening to toast one of your wins at the Elfsong.
And he sees you. You're laughing and joking with your friends. Despite everything that has happened. You're bruised and exhausted, but you're smiling in that moment.
He didn't intend on running into you, and he immediately makes himself scarce.
He ducks into an alleyway and lets himself cry.
That adventurer, so bright and full of potential, is now a hero.
He's scared, he's proud, and seeing you stealing a moment of joy for yourself before diving back into the fray has him simultaneously laughing and sobbing.
While he had been hesitant to make himself known to you before, he commits to standing with you at the end.
So he focuses on healing his body and honing his strength. He might renew his vows as a paladin.
But regardless, he is there when you enter the High Hall, and regardless of how you two parted in the Mind Flayer colony, he pledges his strength to you.
He might not be at your side in the final battle, but he keeps the enemy off of your back.
He fights like the Hellrider Commander he has always been.
And he watches you defeat the Netherbrain.
He isn't the first to congratulate you. No, he doesn't want to interfere in the moment that you share with your companions.
But he is there at the end, brimming with pride.
Before you leave to join your companions at the Elfsong, the two of you sit down on the edge of the jetty, looking out on the Chionthar.
The battle is over. You've won.
Zevlor might not hug you. He might not tell you that you are the child he never thought he'd have.
But he tells you how proud he is of you. And, should you be open to it, he'd like to stay in your life. Be that in the smallest of capacities, where you and he occasionally get a drink and you catch him up on your life, or in a larger capacity, where you seek him out for counsel and training, he wants to see where life will take you.
Should you be in agreement, Zevlor is a very consistent presence in your life.
At first, he is there when you call on him.
But at a certain point, he just gets a sense for when you need him there.
He never wants to barge in, but he'll make excuses to swing by and check on you.
Initially, he thought he would always be a mentor to you. And to a certain degree, he still is.
He never expected to be the shoulder you leaned on while you cried.
He never expected that you would make a point to celebrate his birthday with him.
He most certainly didn't expect you to consider his input on life-changing decisions.
But there he is, rubbing circles into your back as you weep over the loss of a companion.
There he is, confused and dewy-eyed as you push a gift into his hands and wish him a happy birthday.
There he is, watching you accomplish the impossible.
He might not have thought he'd ever be a father, let alone a father figure.
But he is more than content to fill that role for you.
I think that something that made me completly fall hard for Zevlor was (without including all his personality traits that i love) that i knew absolutely nothing about descent into avernus when I sarted to play bg3. This fact made me really curious to understand why the tiefs were refugees and why it was so important to zevlor in specific to take them to the city (as he is a hellrider).
And that sent me in a rabbithole of elturel lore, and zariel and asmodeus (I wasnt way too deep in forgotten realms lore, despite already being a fan of dnd). The Companion lore and the creation of the Hellriders kept spinning in my head like a microwave plate for MONTHS I MEAN MONTHS. SOLID MONTHS.
And also, explaining the brainhot a little: I live/study in a different city from my parents house and Im only able to actually play the game when im on vacation/hollidays at them, because my brother (which lives with them) has a ps5. (My pc cant take bg3 sadly)
SO what does that mean? Since I cant play most of the time I keep just like, ruminating all of the tidbits of his lore?? (In a /pos way I mean) And when i can finally play is just chefkiss like its water in the desert aaaaaaa
