Now, sit down. I'm going to apply the ointment. If you don't cooperate, I'll have to use force. Go ahead then. Make me see the director with a black eye again. You're a rogue.

"I heard it. You said my name"
Deep In Ep. 5
Idk why but this had me laughing so hard
Deep In | Ep 6
Deep In is literally such a good show. I only picked it up because I saw an edit of the actorsātheyāre ridiculously stunningāand I honestly didnāt think it would be anything too special.
To my surprise, itās such a layered drama. The concept is so fire because I genuinely canāt decide whether I want to see more of Zhen Xin & Zhang Zhun or Dr. Fang Chi & his patient.
The cinematography? Beautiful. The transitions between both stories? Exquisite. And donāt even get me started on the post-credit scenes that were brilliantly hidden. I literally had no idea I was missing them untilāonce againāI came across an edit (TT editors you will forever be relevant).
China really did their big one with this show. I canāt wait for more episodes⦠just so I can rewatch the whole thing all over again.
(The last show that had me hooked like this was Duang With You so Iām so happy to be obsessing over something new.
Let this be your sign to start!!)
I love the choices theyāve made integrating the frame story and the nested narrative in Deep In, at times blending the scenes almost seamlessly from one to the other. It makes it so that itās increasingly unclear even to us as the viewers where the acting ends and the real world begins
Iām watching Deep In and a lot of the questionable things Zhen Xin is doing with/to Zhun is pretty spot on for me (not in a good way).
Itās spot on because Iāve experienced these things and itās why I find men to be wholly despicable.
I know guys whoā¦
* would kiss you when youāre drunk.
* would try to create scenarios where they can make moves on you (like Zhen pushing for them to rehearse the explicit scenes just so he can make out)
* would get jealous of you and other people when theyāre already in a relationship.
* would objectify their girlfriends or wives when their self-control is in shambles (like how Zhen keeps telling his girlfriend to come so he doesnāt fall for someone else.)
This is why I donāt believe the toxic trope should be completely eradicated. Despicable men exist in real life and the sad part is that thereās someone out there who wants them and would put up with everything and anything to have them.
Despicable men exist in real life and they still win.
That cheating uncle is still regarded as the best husband and upstanding father by someone or some people who know him.
These men exist in straight relationships, and also in queer ones. I have notes on a few friends and I know what theyāve done and what theyāve received from their significant others.
People quickly hate on these shows with grey characters when truly, these type of men are living and breathing with us. I sit for these shows because they serve as a reminder that the world isnāt a fairytale.
Not everyone is a Prince Charming whoād respect boundaries and be morally upright their whole life. I can count the number of guys I can vouch for and I still wouldnāt trust them.
Now all this talk was for Zhen Xin. The next person is Zhun.
I havenāt watched ep 4 and 5 yet but from what Iāve seen, heās also fighting temptation with his co-star. The difference between them is that one is bold and immoral while the other is timid and also immoral.
Both are literally cheating on their girlfriends because the method acting stopped being method acting two episodes ago.
Zhun also hides behind āweāre rehearsingā to explore his fascination with Zhen. Even while drunk, he tries to stay in character and pushes for deep intimacy. Iām truly not one to extend grace to someone when theyāre very much complicit in their own predicament. Itās why I never victim-painted Wu Suo Wei because his manipulative ass seduced Chi Cheng and continued to chase after such a man with zero regards for boundaries. You canāt play with a wild dog and be shocked that it bit you. Similarly, you canāt see the warning signs and color it with āitās all for work.ā
Zhun knows that heās attracted to Zhen but cowers from it and hasnāt really addressed it. I know money has to be made and thereās pressure from all sides to get married but what can possibly justify you being drunk over your mind and begging your co-star to kiss you while youāre still in character? In fact, how drunk can you be to get into character like that?
Maybe itās still too early to judge but Iām not sold on the āheās being taken advantage ofā discourse just yet.
P.s Iām not making excuses for either of them. Iāve dealt with a handful of victim-playing friends in the past so itās really difficult for me to not be skeptical about this dynamic.
Thereās also the fact that in consensual-nonconsensual setups, the sub tends to act like they never invited the attention and action. Like they werenāt provoking the dom. Like they didnāt want it when truly, they did.
Again, still too early to judge. But I just wanted to lay my two cents out for now.
