I haven’t read American Psycho but I’m familiar with the scene where Patrick Bateman goes to a U2 concert and man. If he had *that* reaction to the Joshua Tree Tour, he would probably explode if he saw the Zoo TV Tour, for five reasons:
1) The Fly is peak Bono sexuality
2) Bono had three characters he played during the tour and one of them is MacPhisto. And MacPhisto is the devil. Bono appeared on stage dressed as the devil.
3) The whole subliminal messaging-vibe to the set… like “a hero is an insect in this world” sounds 100% like an aphorism they’d flash on the screens
4) The themes of insincerity and “we’re embracing superficiality; focus on the shiny glitzy surface so you don’t notice the dark, raw topics we’re writing about underneath it all” feels like it fits with the themes of American Psycho. Or perhaps more Glamorama…
5) The Fly is peak Bono sexuality
