IC 1848: the Soul Nebula. Last night I photographed two nebulae in the constellation Cassiopeia, the so-called Heart and Soul Nebulae. These two vividly red emission nebulae sit about 7000 light years away and are active star formation regions. The brilliant red color comes from ionized hydrogen gas. This image is a result of 3 3/4 hour exposure time. M 76, the Little Dumbbell Nebula, is another expanding shell of gas being propelled outwards from a white dwarf star. It is approximately 2500 light years away from earth. One of the other interesting things about this photograph is the bright reddish star to the lower right of the nebula. That is a red giant star that has expanded to approximately 32 times the diameter of our own sun. It is a little less than 900 light years from us. NGC 7635. The appropriately named bubble nebula In the constellation of Cassiopia. The bubble has been created by stellar wind from a massive hot and young central star. IC 5146, The cocoon nebula. This dim reflection/emission nebula is located about 4000 light years away and is a stellar nursery where new stars are being born. Not entirely happy with this image but it was a fair amount of work capturing and processing it so thought I would share anyway. It was shot two nights ago When the atmospheric transparency was pretty low due to smoke and is comprised of 30 five minute exposures. Stacked in Astro pixel processor and further processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop.
