💸 ... what does tequila think of wealthy people ? does he resent them, or does he believe they earned what they have ?
before he was recruited as a statesman agent, tequila had never known wealth. his initial upbringing was modest. he was raised in rural tennessee, & that’s exactly how his ancestors had lived for generations — to be frank, he simply descended from people who truly worked to sustain themselves, who ( his immediate family included ) survived off of the fruits of their own labors rather than turning a large profit & using that to buy the essentials. when he still lived on the farm, although there was some business involved, his father was the one who took care of that aspect & tequila never personally learned anything about it. what he did do was help his parents to plant the produce the family ate, to raise the animals that provided them with milk, eggs, & meat, to do manual chores like washing clothes by hand & hanging them up to dry ( they were just simple like that, seeing no need for a washing machine or a drier, ) & so on. these formative years instilled a young tequila with an admirable work ethic, & would later give him an appreciation for what it actually means to earn what you have. however, there’s certainly more to his thoughts on the wealthy than being some country boy.
when they had to sell the family farm & move to sneedville, now sans a father, their lifestyle changed drastically. of course, it was an incredibly small town, but it was still the first time he hadn’t lived somewhere completely rural — it was the most urban, most densely - populated area he had ever seen, & he was suddenly expected to adjust on a dime & live out his teen years there. of course, he was too young to help provide in this environment, as were his sisters — & his mother was suddenly a victim of this more modern lifestyle, forced to exhaust herself by taking late shifts & working overtime to earn just enough money to provide for herself & three children. they were now surviving more than they were living, & he just couldn’t help. ( by the time he was old enough to contribute, he’d wrecked his own life, but that’s not quite relevant to this issue. ) the important part is that, all through his teen years, tequila experienced firsthand a very crushing reality: working hard doesn’t necessarily get you anywhere, & even people who have earned more than they were initially dealt probably aren’t going to get much. he accepted the opportunity to become an agent, but he never felt like he had worked for it, so this outlook hardly changed after his recruitment.
with all of the above taken into consideration ... tequila has a distaste for the wealthy which borders on resentment. he tries not to hold onto it, but he can’t help but feel spiteful about how they often don’t have to work for everything while some people ( like his mom ) have to give so much for barely anything. still, he likely has a sort of an appreciation for those self - made millionaire types, because he believes in the idea of earning wealth from humble beginnings such as his own ... but tequila is very much of the opinion that the american dream is dead, so he tends to function under the assumption that the wealthy only got where they are because of luck, not because they worked for it that much harder than anyone else. additionally, he finds the idea of excessive wealth pretty disgusting — since he comes from a poor background, he believes unused money should be used to help similarly unfortunate people. there’s not much he can do about people’s greed, though, as much as he wishes there were.
