I read ”DISTILLATORIA”. It was a visual novel with amazing content. They woke up, but I still feel like I'm dreaming...
I’ve been thinking about various stuff as I work on the new wiki, and a thought occurred to me…
At the beginning of Psychonauts 2, there’s a little scene where Oleander and Raz encounter a Censor in Loboto’s mind. Oleander explains what it is, only to pause and look away for a moment before running off to look for a way to escape the room. I’d always taken this as a joke, with Oleander pausing as a kind of “oh crap” moment, but rather than pulling a funny face, he looks more contemplative.
[ID: A screenshot of Oleander from the above scene, frowning and looking away. /end ID]
And it struck me that Loboto didn’t have Censors in his mind until this moment. The last time Raz was there, there were no Censors. And as Censors are an integral part of any sane person’s mind, as Sasha explains in the first game, the presence of a Censor means Loboto is doing better.
The thing is, Oleander wasn’t in Loboto’s mind to see that… but:
[ID: A screenshot of Oleander in Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, holding up his Psycho-Portal through a porthole. /end ID]
He was the one who gave Raz his psycho-portal in order for him to enter his mind and help him.
He didn’t see what went on in there, and afterward he saw Loboto set the base to self-destruct, so it would be easy for him to assume that Raz was unable to help him… up until he saw the Censor in Loboto’s mind.
That little pause he does could be his reflecting on the fact that Loboto had actually changed–that Raz had helped him… and that Oleander had had a hand in it.
I dunno–I’m always finding new stuff to think about with these games, eheh.
This might explain a few things about Loboto as well. Like how Gristol was able to so throughly condition him to keep the secret. Since the lack of censors and sundry does not just affect a mind when a person is visiting it, it also affects how the mind is dealing with stressors in the real world. Loboto’s mind had no protections to resist whatever torture Gristol used on him. It also shows in how he acts through the games. In the first game Loboto is quick to jump into violence and cruelty, he will hurt people if he has to or wants to. This is seen in the pre-mind scene in RoR as well, Loboto is cheerfully jumping into debraining Raz the old fashioned way. This is the mind Oleander must have seen when he visited Loboto’s the first time. Given he seems surprised by the censors in PSN2, it means he had some idea what was going on in there. After Raz returned the moral compass, Loboto’s reactions change entirely. He is still erratic, but he now seems to choose to run instead of fight. Yes in RoR it is because he does not want to get blown up, but in 2 Loboto spends a good while trying to get Raz to stop through words. The defenses he is rebuilding (since Psychonauts timeline is brutally short they can’t be fully rebuild yet) are giving him the safety to bargain and plead before lashing out. He knows Raz is the person who helped him, so he tries his best to get Raz out the way with the least harm to the kid. Even once words no longer help, Loboto focuses on getting the psychonauts out of his mind rather than hurt them. And when he escapes at the end? It is by slinking off with as little fanfare as possible. To get back to your point, this is not the person Oleander hired and he can see it. He gave Raz the tools to help Loboto and like Raz did with him, he did with Loboto. Which possibly gives Olly a slight boost to his confidense, he can do good. This is some really good subtextual writing going on, especially given the time gap between games.
