Yarrow
In August of last year, my best friend Yarrow was diagnosed with cancer. I still remember saying goodbye to her before I left to Chicago that same month as we sat in her hospital room and began to cry. I remember hating how I wasn’t there for her and the hours I spent with her when I was home. I remember the day she told me her doctors said she wasn’t going to survive. I remember when I was told Yarrow passed away and how I felt. I remember how I felt holding the urn that holds her ashes as my whole body went numb.
It has been approximately 5 months since I lost Yarrow. I still think of her everyday. I still cry over her. I took this image of her in 2014, only a month or two before she graduated high school. I recently re-edited it as a gift. I cried a lot while making this, but it also made me remember the day we took this photo and having the sun set on us while we laughed and ran around the fields.
I don't like sharing such personal experiences, but I didn't think this image would be complete if its story wasn't told along with it. Yarrow was (and always will be) my closest friend and the years we spent growing up together are the greatest gift I could have ever asked for.

Inspired by "A Scanner Darkly", a movie which explores the affects of drug use and perceptions of ones self. The movie is based on a novel by Philip K. Dick which was grounded on his experiences in the 1970s drug culture.
