Little Wonders || Emm & James

James hugged her a little too hard and she didn’t care. It wasn’t that unusual- they were in the middle of a war and who knew when they’d see each other next. Besides, it was James. She’d always had a fondness for his stupid pranks and his even stupider face. He and the others were also so stupid reckless. It made Emm hug back just as hard.
“You too, James.” Seeing her friends alive meant she wasn’t seeing them dead, and that’s what kept her going. That fact alone. She pulled back and grinned at him with watery eyes. “Parenthood suits you. I wasn’t sure if it would or not.”
He could recall the talks they had throughout school. The times they shared and things they'd done. It all seemed like a lifetime ago now. Parenthood had changed him. War had changed him. Hell, it had changed them all. Somewhere underneath it all, he was still the same reckless, cocky, fun-loving James Potter, but now he was for lack of any other term -- mature.
Laughing at her statement, he looked down at himself - the shirt he wore was crumpled a bit, pants having a stain on them from earlier that morning when Harry had spit up. Something so mundane in the thick of it all. Something so wonderful. So natural.
"Yeah, well. You and me both on that one." Closing the door, he beckoned her further into the house. "Lily's still sleeping, but Harry should be up any minute. You want anything to drink before he does? I had thought about getting the kettle on anyway."
