i was trying to gather all the references to nabu malikata wearing a veil and covering her eyes (as you do) but now i’m starting to suspect that it might be a metaphor for her using the abyss to hide herself from the heavenly principles as she refused to meet the same fate as the other angels.
(and thank you @sailor-rurouni for pointing out this line in nicole’s character story 4, which def makes it sound like she managed to slip through the cracks for a little while without giving up her power)
“exhaust every effort” leaves it wide open to interpretation on just how far she might have gone to protect herself, especially with these lines in flower of paradise lost:
i don’t necessarily think she liked doing this, and she created the khvarena with the intent for her to dispel the abyss during the cataclysm. (just a random side note but her separating a pure shard of her power from herself to combat abyssal contamination reminds me of how rukkhadevata broke off the purest branch of irminsul to create nahida)
anyways she probably only intended to use the abyss to hide herself for as long as possible until she could come up with a way to defy celestia, which ended up being her imparting her knowledge on king deshret. (it kinda sounds like she thought he could become a descender?)
with all that being said, this line about shame and sorrow could align with her regret for possibly being the one to bring the abyss into sumeru:
especially since the nightingale in question is most likely rukkhadevata, who warned nabu malikata when they first met not to try to defy the heavenly principles:
and the final piece of this (which might be veering into red string territory so that’s why i put it at the end) is the color purple. it’s so often associated with the abyss, abyssal energy, abyssal corruption, etc etc.
nabu malikata wore an amethyst crown, the original padisarahs were said to be a beautiful purple that even rukkhadevata couldn’t replicate, the flowers around bayt al-sukr are a pinkish purple, and the veiled (!) figure wearing the amethyst crown in the tcg card is covered in purple.
forgot to include these lines that specifically describe her gaze as something maddening and empty, ‘void’ especially raising eyebrows because of the abyss being called the void realm:
one of her soundtracks also mentions the void…

Happy Birthday, Paimon!
Paimon never thought she'd be spending her birthday in Nod-Krai this year... and with so many little cuties keeping her company, too!
Look, they're dancing in a circle! Don't they look like they're celebrating Paimon's birthday?
Honestly, Paimon likes moments like this even more than fancy gifts. It's so lively, and so heartwarming...
Of course, things would be even more perfect with another slice of sweet, sweet cake!
The Next Page | Setting Forth Toward the Next Journey
This chapter of the story is concluded. The next remains to be continued.
i feel like rhinedottir being part of the hexenzirkel should make the hexenzirkel more interesting. like they're like a coven of witches who are neutral in regards to the seven nations, and they only have a pact with mondstat because of varka and venti (a very recent pact mind you). rhinedottir should be a great example of how they have no allegiances, and how they have no reason to follow the laws of teyvat.
but instead, it feels like rhinedottir being part of the hexenzirkel makes her less interesting. like genshin is very clearly trying to advertise the hexenzirkel as a coven of "good witches". like "oh yeah we're called witches, but don't worry we're all nice!" when that is objectively not the case. so when we have a character like rhinedottir, who we have heard of since the beginning of the game as someone responsible for a lot of the abyssal monsters currently roaming teyvat, as part of the hexenzirkel it feels like they're trying to wipe away her past and show that she's actually good, when she is very clearly not.
it feels like all the sinners are like the make-or-break for genshin's portrayal of truly morally gray characters, and actually exploring them in depth without dehumanizing them and without glossing over their actions. like they did such a good job of it with rerir, and i love whatever they're cooking with surtalogi and skirk. vedrfolnir is obviously gonna have an important arc because he's literally dain's brother, but from what we've seen they've done a good job of portraying him as someone who is tortured by visions of the future, and i can clearly see how he'd fall prey to the abyss. we don't really know enough about hroptatyr yet for me to say anything about him. i'm so concerned about rhinedottir because it feels like she's on the verge of greatness, but it also feels like she could easily fall into being having all her past actions being ignored by the characters and by the story.
