5e Disease - Myconid Spore Plague
After contracting Scintillation Spores from an undead who was animated by the spore plague, any flesh-and-blood creature must make a DC12 Constitution saving throw at the end of each Long Rest. Before the victim fails 3 of these saves- when the spores are still incubating -it can be cured using Lesser Restoration or Lay on Hands. After 3 failed saves however, it is too late to be cured, and the victim becomes an undead spore servant upon its death.
Only once a creature has failed 3 times do symptoms begin to show, beginning in the order shown below. A new symptom manifests every 1d12 days.
Sun Sickness. The victim begins to feel ill when exposed to direct sunlight, and has the effects of Sun Sickness. Skin becomes itchy, dry, and agitated when exposed to sun.
Respiratory Problems. The victim begins to have trouble breathing, feels as if there is something caught in their throat, and coughs often- sometimes to the point of expelling nearly-invisible spores. Temporary effect: The Victim has the effects of Respiratory Damage during this phase.
Rapport Spores. The victim begins to regularly expel spores from their lungs whenever they breathe. Any creature that moves within 10ft of the victim is exposed to Scintillation Spores. The victim gains the Rapport Spores ability. Temporary effect: At the end of each Long Rest during this phase, the victim takes 1d4 necrotic damage, which cannot be healed by resting. When this phase ends, it can be healed normally.
Distress Spores. The victim gains the Distress Spores ability, and the Spore Sympathy trait. Its Constitution score is permanently reduced by 2.
Creature type affected. The victim gains the Plant creature type in addition to its current type, and Hivemind Apathy trait. The victim gains one of the following spore abilities, which is selected at the beginning of this stage and able to be used once per day: Caustic Spores, Euphoria Spores, (Minor) Animating Spores.
When attempting to harm a creature that has the Rapport Spores ability, you must make a DC12 Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the attempt goes through. On a failure, you must redirect your attack to a creature who does not have this ability or waste any associated Action or resource.
When in an area of myconid influence, you are part of the spore network made up of creatures' Rapport Spores ability. The more creatures are in the network, the stronger it is. When you are in a spore network, there are additional effects:
When you fail the save associated with attempting to harm a creature with the Rapport Spores ability, you take 2d4 Psychic damage as the voices of the others in the spore network cry out in your mind.
When a creature you can see and are not already hostile toward attempts to harm a creature with the Rapport Spores ability, you must succeed a DC12 Wisdom saving throw or become hostile toward the attacking creature, prioritizing subduing them over other combatants.
You find yourself apathetic toward the idea of dying.
When going into an unconscious state (such as sleep or trance), there is a 20% chance you are taken over by spores in your mind, which possess your body. While possessed in this way, your body displays the following behaviours:
Need to Spread. Your body attempts to expose other creatures to its scintillation spores through whatever means necessary.
Violent Nature. Your body attempts to kill any flesh-and-blood creature it can, regardless of your attachments.
Disregard for Life. Your body shows no regard for hazards that would otherwise bring you pause, and readily throws itself into them in pursuit of its goal.
Fear of the Sun. Your body avoids sunlight at all costs. When possessed in this way, you make a DC15 Wisdom saving throw each time you take damage or are exposed to sunlight for 1 round. On a success, the possession ends. Otherwise, the possession ends when you would usually wake up. If you were possessed for more than half of your rest's duration, you must succeed a DC10 Constitution saving throw at the end of your rest to gain its benefits. Either way, you gain 1 level of Exhaustion.
