Im back from my months long disappearance purely to talk about the new cat noir transformation sequence. Now the transformations in this show is something I have dedicated an unhealthy amount of time to thinking about, analysing and dissecting the animation. The s6 transformations have been really hit or miss for me. Some times they are really good (E.g. Max's) and sometimes they are so unbelieveably bad IDK how they were approved (E.g. Ladybugs??????? Like seriously shes the main character why tf is hers such a downgrade from the previous animation style) I wanna talk about cat noir's cause... IT'S SO GOOD!?!?!? IT'S SO GOOOD YOU GUYS SERIOUSLY. I AM SHOCKED. Obviously it's not perfect, there's definetely some things it does worse but overall I think it's a really good upgrade. So I'm going to pretty much go through shot by shot and talk about what changes: Why it matters, why it works, why it doesn't etc (in my opinion). I am about to be sooooo nitpicky it's unbelievable. The first MAJOR change is when the ring is charged. They dedicate a lot more time to it and I have mixed feelings on that? Adrien's transformation is supposed to be SUPER high energy and snappy. It's who Cat Noir is, high energy, and quick action. Focusing on his ring for soo long kills the sections momentum. I will say the animation itself is nice. The way the ring opens and the paw print comes up does look cool and I like the claws kind of locking it in place. I don't think it makes up for how long it takes. Him putting on his mask is pretty much the same except they add a couple of impact frames when he opens his eyes. (Overall his eyes are a lot more emphasised in the new sequence i've noticed. They are very glowy). It also disguises them actually changing out his hair model which I find funny. (In the old one they just switched his hair when the camera changed to a different shot). Cat ears are largely the same, I think the follow through on the motion is done better in the OG the ears take longer to settle which works well. From here the s6 transformation really comes into its own. They have Adrien do this flick to summon his bell which I think was a great choice. It's an iconic part of his design and one of the first thing people notice so to draw so much attention to it in the transformation really works for me. I also love how the have the detailing on his suit like glow on his body with that summon of the bell. Adrien just feels a lot more active in the new one which is a massive surprise to me. Like I didn't think that was really possible but all the changes are so good. They draw more attention to adrien throwing his arms out by zooming out more, keeping him in centre frame and the camera mostly still. (instead of moving the camera with the arms) THE LEG KICKS. PERFECTION. Takes the worst part of the original (the camera revolve around his body, I say it's the worst just cause Adrien doesn't have much input in it and is static for the section which feels a bit strange) and makes it so much more energetic. They draw these little effects on to emphasise it to and MWAH CHEF'S KISS ITS GREAT. Unfortunately him summoning his tail is a downgrade. He does a little flourish to show off the cat paw on his back which is fine, but the tail summon... It's just worse you guys. Because he's framed in the centre they can't do as extreme a pose as the OG's which just does not look as good. It looks so much more stiff. Like just compare:

There's so much more life in the OG's pose and he's so dramatic with it. The ending bit is really going for a different vibe I think. He doesn't claw at the camera like the OG so there's not much to compare there. The only thing I will note is that I LOVE the way the tail follows behind in these new shots. What I do want to talk about is the final posing. The new one is wayyyyyy better. His body settles in a much more realistic way, the chest and head overshooting before settling back. The logo coming in with the final pose rather than after I think gives it more impact. He does anticipate that move into the final pose a lot more in the OG which I'm mixed on. Obviously draws more attention to the final impact but... it feels like it stops the energy of the transformation for a bit tooo long (as compared to the new one). One last thing is that they gave him a moving hold (essentially adding tiny movements to a static pose to make it feel more alive) after the final pose which THANK GOD. IT WAS SO AWKWARD HOW THE CHARACTERS STOPPED MOVING AFTER THEIR LOGO COMING IN IN SEASONS 1-5. THIS LOOKS GOOD. KEEP DOING THIS. I would also have posed the tail differently but that's personal preference So thats my thoughts on this transformation. Thank you for coming to my ted talk. But with miraculous’ 10th anniversary I still wanted to do something and well the zine @miracu10us just happened to accept me! I actually started watching the show in late season 3, just before Chat Blanc came out so I didn't really get to experience his fanon incarnation. I still see remnants of it occasionally however, in the odd fanart and fanfic. Here's to you my favourite homicidal goober.

First off, hats off to @scribblekingdom for this incredible art, which graces our cover. Sharing the image doesn't tell the story of the level of effort this image represents. Every time news of a new Ladybug variant came out, back to the drawing board. It humbled and excited us in equal measure.

As you open the magazine (it's really more of a mook at this point), you will see what appears to be two strange yellow pages with small white markings. Zoom in! The zine begins and ends with two end pages that, together, contain the Ao3 names of every author who has posted a pubicly-available ML fic on the site. It's our version of the Lord of the Rings end credits, which listed every member of the LotR fan club.

How do you get this dern thing? The simplest link to visit is our Carrd.

We currently have two options for viewing:

A web version for download. This is a 200MB PDF meant for viewing on a device. The quality astounds me.

A flipbook for viewing online without downloading.

We will have a third option soon, possibly within twenty-four hours: a CMYK version meant to be taken to a print shop or used with your own printer. The link will show up on the Carrd, but we'll also announce it here.

We are thinking seriously about investigating a print-on-demand option. No money would come to our hands. We would just be setting it up so anyone who wants a print version but doesn't know where to look could just use that service. The zine was designed using Canva, which offers such a service. It might be easy to connect the project to their POD service and they print and ship it right to you.

Soo I really should’ve posted this a while ago but I was waiting to get marks back for it. I don’t know what my unis policy is with posting assignments but I wanted to be safe rather than sorry.

So this tri one of my classes was on animation in video games and the assignment was we had to make ‘a game entity.’ What they expected us to do was to use pre made assets and just add code in unreal engine to make them playable.

Me being *normal* and *sane* pitched IN FRONT OF MY ENTIRE CLASS (I swear everyone at that university just knows me as the miraculous girl) to make cat noir and do ALL THE ANIMATIONS from scratch. Yknow like a moron.

They’re not my best work but time constraints. I picked cat noir over ladybug because I knew I could draw him faster (all those spots make me want to die) and his pre s6 design for the same reason, I know it better so I can do it faster.

The animations I made were an idle, jump, fall, run and attack. (Everything but the attack was mandatory to pass)

I drew some new buildings for the environment (but I mostly reused spring and a storm assets SUE ME I HAD TO CUT CORNERS SOMEWHERE) and made cat noir into a *mostly* functional video game character.

Now before anyone asks. No I’m not making this into a full video game. I did it for my university and that’s it. While it was fun, I do not have the time nor energy to start a project that big right now.

SEASON 6 ILLUSTRHATER THOUGHTS

honestly, I was expecting the animation to be more jarring for me than it actually was. It was actually really easy for me to get into and tbh just looks really nice. Adrien is the character I'll need to get used to the most, but I like his look fine, I just need to get used to it.

But like. special shoutout to nino. NINO????? NINO LOOKS. SO FUCKING CUTE. I love him so much I want to squish his face?? I'm almost unable to watch this episode in a normal way because I'm too busy staring at Nino's adorable face the whole time.

the DJWifi was so cute in this episode. theyre so sweet

in general I really like the redesigns of all the characters. I think they all look like... them. Like Nathaniel looks more like Nathaniel to me, Kagami looks more like Kagami, Sabrina looks like Sabrina and Ivan looks like Ivan. I can't describe it — they look like they've matured enough to have a better understanding of who they are. I like it.

Also, the intro sequence. If there's still any doubt about whether the show will address "marinette's lie coming back to bite her / looming over her" this season, I feel like the intro answers that pretty clearly and with a distinct tone

Another thing — the background characters look soooo much better in the new animation. Not only do they not look like terrifying low res monstrosities like they did in the old show, but they have such a wide array of distinct body types that i really appreciate. a lot of diversity in the crowds w race and disability too. and they look good. it's really refreshing.

I. LOVE. the new butterfly-telepathy sequences. the way that butterfly!lila talks to her victims in a little dreamscape where she's able to use her body language and manipulation tactics. I cannot actually emphasize how much this strangely excited me. It feels so much more emotionally impactful and interesting and dynamic and Lila than what Hawkmoth did

I know people are going to be upset about Marinette being awkward around Adrien again, but I feel like it makes a lot of sense to me. In the more general sense, it makes a lot of sense for this soft-refresh of the show that is marketing itself to a new audience to re-introduce the adrienette dynamic in a way that is just a smidge redundant to old fans. This is kind of important background on how Adrien and Marinette have always been with each other and the context of their relationship! That's important to show.

As a more in-character/universe explanation — while, yes, Adrien and Marinette started to get much more comfortable in their relationship in the old season, they never really got time to BREATHE. they were awkward and messy for the majority of their time together in s5, and then right as they started to get comfortable, Gabriel started puppeteering Adrien in a way that made things pretty tense for them, and then a whole whirlwind happened where he was sent away, and then his DAD DIED and he presumably spent a lot of the summer in mourning and— and— i dunno. I don't think it's too much of a stretch for me to believe that their relationship still feels awkward, especially when a new butterfly villain just popped up and likely reminded marinette of the whole Fiasco and threw her into mega-stress mode.

Their relationship isn't technically all that "new" like they act like it is, but this IS actually probably the first time they've been able to go on regular dates like this! So it feels new, they're still sort of in that "new" stage. Before, Gabriel was keeping Adrien away, and then Adrien probably wasn't in a good headspace for a lot of the summer after he died.

(Also, I just enjoy watching Marinette be awkward about Adrien. I definitely prefer them re-treading some old ground to new audiences than for their relationship to feel too jarringly different than how we've seen them interact in the past. I wouldn't want the time skip to be used as too much of a crutch, especially when I expect that Adrien spent a lot of it in mourning)

But anyway, they're still kissing in the season intro, and this is only episode TWO of the season, so I'm excited to see them gradually get more lovey dovey as the season goes on. (Or for Marinette's stress and guilt to overwhelm her! Who knows! I'm down!)

Oh also, Ladybug looks SO GOOD. she is so shiny and pretty and I love the red in her hair and i love her and I love ladynoir talking about their relationships and and and. and. i love them. thanks for coming to my ted talk

I had a lot of really similar opinions on the new season. The animation def didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would, except in some of the outdoor scenes where the lighting really bothered me (I do not know much about lighting in 3D so I cannot voice as to why). But other than that my main thoughts about the new ep can be summed up in me spam dming my friend about the episode

miraculous ladybug fandom stop hating on new animation, i genuinely understand and agree that new animation can be a big change and scary in sorts

for SO LONG people HATED AND DESPISED the old animation and even refused to watch the show due to it, trust me guys, from the clip we saw at the end of the london special, it genuinely looks REALLY GOOD

The thing is, Astruc has said multiple times that the animation has to change because the shows models are so old they don’t work with modern software.

I do think the new animation isn’t as good as the shows best looking episodes (the specials, most s4-5 episodes done by SAMG) but it’s leagues better then the show at its worst (Qilin, simpleman). On average it’s definitely a step up and with time it’ll get better.

I find it so frustrating when people say that a fault of miraculous is that the characters don’t have more outfits. (A writing/design fault) like that’s not a completely normal thing for cartoons.

Giving a character multiple outfits isn’t as easy as just giving it to them. It needs to go through a character designer, a turn around, then modelling, then texturing, (in miraculous’ case) all of which costs money. It doesn’t make sense in most cases for shows to devote that level investment just to give a character more variety when let’s be real, it’s not necessary. That’s why in 2D productions characters can often get multiple outfits because it is slightly less costly (you really only need to come up with the design and make a turn around).

Why do you think the show only gives the character a new outfit when it’s relevant to the plot? Or when it would be weird not to? It’s not that it would be hard to do. It’s not that they don’t want too, it’s that it would cost more money to. Money executives aren’t willing to give.

look man, i agree that outfits are near impossible to do, especially in 3d animation. (2d animation can somewhat get away with it depending on the style. IE: Mabel from Gravity Falls) but also: If you know you're making a 3d animated cartoon, and that as a result of the limits of the genre you cannot give characters more then one, maybe 2 sets of clothes. Then you should work within the limits of your genre and not make your primary main character and antagonist BOTH fashion designers cause you cannot show that off. And escpecially dont make your deuteragonist a model, the profession that is ABOUT showing off different clothes. Yes its an unreasonable expectation of the audience, but the writers chose a premise that implicitly tells the audience to expect this. Marinette could've had any passion or hobby, and gabriel could've worked been written to work in any other branch then fashion and the show would probably be just as good. This reads like the people who defended No Man's Sky by claiming its buyers shouldn't have expected the stuff that Sean Murray told them was gonna be in the game. Dont promise stuff you know you cant deliver, and your audience wont be mad at you. Is that such a difficult concept to grasp?

Respectfully, I disagree.

The show did not ‘promise’ multiple outfits and comparing it to no man’s sky is really weird when the situation is entirely different. There’s a difference between telling your audience: “we are adding this to the game” and then not vs “this is the premise therefore we the audience are assuming this.” And that assumption gets proven wrong.

I would compare this to what they did to Chloe and the fandom reaction to that but at least in that case there was a clear setup of that idea. You’re mad at the show because you made up an expectation that the show then didn’t follow through on.
