MAY ABBAD.
May simply nodded, arms crossed over her chest as she kept studying her surroundings almost absentmindedly. She might have lived in Portland for over five years now but venturing to the square without a solid plan of action was not something she had done a whole lot; May wasn’t one of those people who enjoyed walking about without a destination or goal in mind. “I think I might have heard something like that before. It’s less fiddly that way, right?”
for a moment, at least, henry thought he might actually get away with nodding and smiling as if he completely understood what she said. it used to be a sore spot, not understanding certain english words – especially when other kids made fun of him for it. the embarrassment has long since faded; he’d been speaking english for thirty years, and only atypical words tripped him up.
unfortunately, fiddly was apparently one of them. henry’s smile slowly dissolved into an awkward grimace, and he shook his head, biting back the urge to laugh at himself. “ if i try to lie about this, it’ll show on my face. i have no idea what fiddly means. ”
i just realized i never put this out there, but please add me on discord if you’d like !! i’m literally available 24 / 7 there and i collect shitposts,

THOMAS WINSLOW.
Thomas was never one to say no to trying new places when it came to food. The feeling of not knowing if something was going to be good or bad always made him nervous, a good type of nervous and he enjoyed it. He had his fair share of bad places but more often, they turned out to be pretty good and right now Henry was absolutely right, though he already knew. “Oh I know. This is is my go to spot after a late night shift,” he said before taking a bite of his torta. “I think I’ve tried most of the items on the menu except tongue meat – can’t get myself to man up for that one.”
henry grinned and laughed, excited to hear enthusiasm from someone other than himself. he loved thomas for that – a force as positive if not more so than himself. “ fuck yeah, ” he said, bumping thomas’ arm with his elbow. “ why didn’t i know this? and more importantly, how have we not crossed paths here before? ” he laughed. without thinking twice, he took a taco from the little paperboard food tray and held it out to his friend. “ here. no tongue, i promise. grilled shrimp. ”
as a kid, even henry had been skeptical of trying the more unordinary foods like tongue or stomach lining – but his abuela wouldn’t stand for it. he wasn’t allowed to leave the dinner table until he had eaten everything on his plate, and his high energy made sure that didn’t last for more than twenty minutes. “ listen, i’m not gonna force you to try anything you don’t want to, but i will say you’re missing out. you just have to pretend it’s something else when you take your first bite, and then its origins will be long forgotten. ”
BEATRICE HUNSELL.
Beatrice had been sitting in the main square on a bench for a few hours, simply people watching. She’s not so great with interactions, so one of her favorite things to do is watch other people get to enjoy them. She was actually sitting in this very spot when she had the idea for her first book. She decided to grab some food from the truck right across the way, and heard the man speak to her right after she walked up. Beatrice chuckled slightly at what the man said, nodding. “I don’t know much about hispanic cuisine, but I do know I like food trucks.”
“ don’t know much about hispanic cuisine, huh? sounds like you need to spend a weekend in san diego. a weekend is more than enough to get the gist of it. i mean, it’s mostly mexican food, but it’s the best place to start besides mexico or south america, ” henry said, grinning. portland had been his home for far longer than california ever was, but he often missed the sun and the food. his abuela insisted on staying in san diego, despite his best efforts to convince her to neighbor him in portland. “ here are the things you need to know: green onion, tomatillo, tajin. the tajin is the key. that’s why this place, ” he made a sweeping motion to the truck, “ is the best at what they do. it’s also the only place i’ve been able to find elotes in maine. ”
LUCINDA HARTFORD.
what lucinda was doing with herself was questionable; even she had wondered. however, she had been pushing herself to the point of not actually caring about saving anything around her. it was clear that her marriage couldn’t be saved as her husband grew TIRED of her and she wondered if she should even fight for her show considering its lack of airtime. midlife crisis didn’t even BEGIN to summarize what she felt like she was going through. there was never any particular reason why she was like this and it not only frustrated her but frustrated the people around her. with no insight into what she was thinking as shallow emotions were displayed, they had no way of getting through to her. lucinda was a washed up former child star and the way she talked to people hadn’t differed from her glory days. the way she turned to look at the male after his suggestions implied that he had said something far worse to her. “ excuse me ? ” the redhead scoffed. “ did you just suggest that i get more cuisine… out of a truck ? is this HELL ? ”
henry stared at lucinda in surprise – less so because of who she was and more so because of her reaction to his suggestion. for someone who loved netflix ( especially when he got to borrow his friend’s ) he’s never been well versed in tv personalities or actors. far from starstruck, but absolutely taken aback. the way she looked at him made him feel as though he’d insulted her very existence – but he managed a smile nonetheless, hoping for a smooth recovery. in his line of work, patience was a requirement. “ food trucks get a worse rep then they usually deserve, ” he said cheerfully. “ i mean, they have to pass all kinds of rigorous health tests. come on, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. i’ll even buy the first taco, because i can guarantee you’ll want another. ”
// me, changing my whole tagging system and theme(s) for the 6th time today?? more likely than you think. i’m finally getting around to my replies so if you’re interested in a starter from HENRY COSTA or my new child SEPTEMBER GRAHAM, go ahead and pop a like on this post & let me know who you want one for or from! if not, i’ll just go random!
andie broderick.
‘ hey, come back here! ’ andie shouts after the dog; sitting patiently at her side one moment, and gone the next. the visibly excited malinois had taken off down the road, bounding towards unsuspecting passersby. and though she knew very well that her dog was utterly harmless ––– her rather intimidating size indicated otherwise to those not already acquainted with her antics. ‘ she’s friendly, i promise! ’ she calls out, breathless as she attempts to catch up to them.
𝗑. BOBO has always been a social dog – since henry rescued him two years ago, even professional trainers couldn’t get him to stop from saying hello to just about every stranger he came across. it AMAZED henry, how bobo could be so happy despite everything he’d been through. that he could still love people as much as he did. so henry is not unused to feeling bobo tugging at his leash – but this time it was to try and meet another dog halfway. “ hey princess ! ” his lips spread into a grin at the sight of andie and her malinois. he dropped to one knee and opened his arms to the dog, bobo barking happily at his side. “ it’s good to see you too, kiddo. ” henry looked up, still grinning. “ always so vicious, ” he teased.
𝗑. the main square was henry’s favorite place to go on his nights off – it was always bustling with people, smiling and laughing with family or with friends. more often than not he came alone, if only to observe & enjoy a moment of peace. the food trucks were, of course, a bonus. “ let me tell you something, ” he said, and glanced to the person beside him. “ don’t listen to what anyone else tells you. the best hispanic food you will eat outside of abuela’s is from a food truck. that’s simply a fact. ” he leaned forward for the tacos being held out for him, and dropped a handful of change and singles into the tip jar on the way.
alice holloway.
“ what’s the point of assigning a book report if these kids aren’t even going to read the book ? ” she spoke aloud, to no one in particular. she had a stack of papers in front of her and the one on stop was … clearly pure gibberish. she slumped back in her chair, tapping the red pen on the table as she watched the steam rise from her coffee. “ sometimes i think everything i say goes in one kids ear and out the other. ”
𝗑. henry couldn’t help but smile when he heard alice lamenting the quality of her students’ papers. she was a cheery teacher, and one with better impulse control than he ever had – the nut he couldn’t crack. “ it doesn’t take a mind reader to know that i was not my teachers’ favorite student. academically, at least. ” he took a sip from his own cup of coffee – drop of cream, pinch of sugar. “ mind if i join you? i can help grade papers. i think i’d make a pretty convincing ms. alice holloway. ”
willow lopez.
“This is just my luck,” Willow groaned when the elevator she was in seemed to get stuck between two levels. In fact, it dawned on her that they were quite high up too. “Tell me this has already happened to you and this will get resolved on it’s own.” She asked the person she was with, hoping there was some kind of reset mechanism built into these things. With a final groan, she began to pound on the door once she realized she had no service on her cell.
𝗑. henry groaned when the elevator screeched to a halt, lights flickering as the power went dead and re-booted – already late, of course this would happen. he shifted from foot to foot, dropping his bag on top of the roller case at his feet. he looked sideways at willow and gave a half-hearted smile. “ believe it or not, twice, ” he said, and rolled his eyes . he was already leaning down to find the red emergency button – when she started pounding on the door. “ hey, hey, we’re good, ” he said quickly, turning his attention to her. “ it’s fine. listen, i don’t mean to sound rude, but are you – claustrophobic, or anything? or are you just frustrated? ”
