It took a bit of time, but the perfect spot had finally been found. Parking the navy blue VW Bug was always easy since it wasnât the biggest car. Somehow Charlie managed to get three giant blankets and four pillows into it. They all decided to tumble out once she opened the trunk. One managed to make it further than the others and she scrambled to get it before it rolled too far. As she ran for it she bumped into a moving body and her cheeks flushed. âSorry about that I wasnât looking and well I put way too many blankets in that tiny trunk.â Looking up she smiled at the person. âHappy Pride!â she exclaimed before placing the blanket on her shoulder.Â
Paloma saw the little blanket roll towards her, bending down to pick it up she didnât realize that its owner was on its way to grab it. She winced at the bump but kept herself together since it wasnât such a big deal and a mere accident. âOh, no worries!â She stood up with the blanket in hand. âCharlie, hey! I feel ten times better that itâs you and not a complete stranger though but sorry about the bumping. Hereâs your blanket,â she handed it over.

Scarlett adjusted the sunglasses sitting on her nose before turning it up to the trees. She winced at the already too-present sun beating down on her and she immediately regretted agreeing to participating in this event. âIf I had known there would be so much dirt I would have worn different shoes,â she said, toeing her light blue heels into the ground. âI cleared all my appointments for this. How did you convince me to go⊠bird-watching? I could have been sleeping in until noon.â
âHeels shouldâve never been an option in the first place.â Paloma shook her head at her friend, but couldnât help to let out a small laugh in return to her complaints. âBecause I promised you mimosas right after with a side of lots of food so who are you to pass out that opportunity?â She gently nudged her arm. âBesides, who often do you go bird watching? Probably never. I mean neither do I really so it seemed like a grand opportunity.â
hii sorry I've been mia these past few days, this week started rough but I should be around. Iâm going to put non-event threads on pause for now but theyâre in my drafts for when the event is over!
âIf your parents put that much pressure on you knowing it isnât your strong suit, then anything is fair game. You could either have it catered or do some take out and throw out all of the packagings and pretend you made it. No one would dare say anything about it not being home cooked.â Xander shrugged. âHow many people are you expecting?â
âWell I thought about catering from a restaurant but now Iâm thinking that catering from a person rather than a chain might be more believable.â Just having to do anything to impress her family and show them that she was more than capable to be on her own--it was too damn stressful for her. âFive, three of those are my younger brothers so theyâll eat about anything and not care where it came from as long as itâs good.â
kirby was no chef by any means, but they were willing to put their best foot forward and help. even if that meant cooking. âyou know we can always try and cook and if that doesnât work out we can order something.â they suggested. âif we do get order food, pretend you made it.â
âKirby you have no idea how many times Iâve been thinking of just going with that but my parents are,â she paused to try to find the right words. âWitches or something, they will literally know whether or not it is store-bought. What would be more pathetic, cooking something not so great or getting caught cheating my way through dinner?â
If there was a trait that Oliveâs parents passed on down to them it was the natural ability to work with food. They were ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. âFirst: what level of fancy is the dinner party? And two: when is the dinner party so I know what kind of time crunch weâre working with?â
âNothing fancy at all. Just your regular family get-together where they want to test their very grown daughter and see if she's capable of being on her own after numerous times of me saying I am completely capable,â she rambled and when she came to a stop she took in a deep breath. âSorry about that, it just gets on my nerves. But itâs tomorrow night... I know itâs kind of very last minute but Iâm sure we could pull something off together.â
âOkay, so not that making coffee is the most difficult job in the world but, is it so difficult to be nice to the person who makes your drink?â Ellie let out a sigh, clearly annoyed over the day she just had. âMaybe Iâm the one out of line here, but I swear sometimes customer service jobs are literally the worst.â
âUnfortunately we live in a world with a lot of entitled people who think they can be assholes to just anyone. Iâm sorry about whatever happened.â Paloma offered, giving her a small sympathetic smile. âI propose that we push past it, for now at least. Karma works in mysterious ways and theyâll get it. How about some ice cream? Youâre not lactose intolerant right? I think Iâve also got some vegan ice cream if anything.â
âAnd you came to me? My mĂŁe would pray for my cooking skills to improve and with no luck, ya girl is a dud,â Liv scrunched her face up looking at the otherâs set up in the kitchen. âBut I mean- two terrible cookes have to make one semi-good one right? Thatâs how math works.â
âI had a lot more faith in you than me, alright?â She sighed and brought a hand up to the back of her neck, already feeling stressed out. âHow bad could a casserole be, right? We canât possibly mess it up if we follow the recipe perfectly.â Or so she thought. She didnât exactly have the best of luck before.
âLooks like you donât have the choiceâ he said, pointing out the obvious. And he also hoped she managed to learn enough to cook for that particular dinner. âWell, Iâm not 5 star chef but Iâm okay. I did learn when I was in college. It was mostly very simple recipes back then but after graduating, I traveled abroad and learned a few thingsâ.
âNope,â she chuckled with a shake of her head. âWell if weâre talking about college recipes, I make a killer cup of ramen, amazing quesadillas, a nice plate of fruits with some chili powder and lemon...â she kissed her fingers. âSo where did you study abroad? Any fun places youâd recommend?âÂ
âDonât you worry,â Becky smiled, enveloping Palomaâs hand with her own. âJust give me the time and theme and Iâve got you covered,â she nodded. âIf thereâs one thing us Southern women know how to do itâs host us a dinner party. Iâm gettinâ all excited just thinkinâ about it,â she giggled.
Paloma grinned, feeling a bit of relief that Becky was willing to help. âThereâs no theme exactly just anything edible really. Should I do a theme at all? I never thought about it but if I go that extra mile maybe itâll gain me some points.â

A STRANGER MAKES A CRUDE COMMENT TO YOUR CHARACTER. HOW DO THEY REACT? Paloma is one to stand her ground so she would not let it slide. Sheâd go off on them, depending on what kind of comment and how insulting it is, but sheâd still keep her head held up high and defend herself.Â
âYeah, that would be great actually. I thought them having color coded leashes would make things easier but apparently I didnât account forâŠthis happening,â Cammy admitted with a small laugh, taking one awkward side step. Gathering all of the leashes in one hand, she used her free hand to fish out some treats and handed them to the other woman, âIf you can hold their attention with these for a moment, I should be able to sort this out, I think.â
âHaving you noticed that nothing is ever that easy?â She teased, holding her hand out for the treats and getting to eye level with the dogs to distract them and help with the leashes at the same time. âHow do you handle three dogs? You mustâve had some growing up, maybe?â
âYour phone doesnât switch to directions on-foot?â Thomas asked. âSo, Paloma. I hear the school yearâs ending. Is there anything cool you plan to do before you take on any summer jobs?â
âIt does, but then little blue navigator thing goes south when youâre supposed to go north and itâs just the same cycle until I end up where I wasnât even supposed to be at.â Paloma realized that she probably sounded so dumb and as if she couldnât follow simple directions. âIâll probably go to the coast. I mean, itâs not like you can go in the water without freezing to death but I love the sand so I might spend some days over there.â
âWhat you can pick something super easy to make. Dinner party doesnât mean you have to cook something huge or crazy. I mean pasta is always simple and bountiful and if you need help you know I got you.â
âI thought about pasta for sure, but I think last time I made it I donât know what I did that it ended up stuck to the bottom of the pot.â
âYour parents are creativeâ he laughed âI love itâ. Although ordering and pretending she cooked was an idea, he doubted theyâd believe it was her doing. âYou could do that. It would the easy way out but youâre not going to fool them. I think theyâre trying to tell you that you need to learnâ.
âCreative or just straight-up cruel?â She joked. âI know, I know. Trust me, Iâve gone through every scenario possible and whether or not Iâd get away with it. And I have also gone through the whole mentality of me needing to get it together and just order one of those subscription boxes and learning through those. Eventually, Iâll get there. How about you though? Good cook or not so good?â
âYouâre how old and you donât know how to cook?â His tone was judgemental and bit harsh, but in Tariqâs opinion judgment in this situation seemed warranted, but he wasnât judging her. âClearly your parents failed at being parents unless their goal was for you to die at a young age with your arteries clogged full of junk food. Their job is to teach you how to survive in the world and neither of them taught you the basic life skill of how to cook. Failures. Both of them and now their taunting you with their failure.â
Paloma could sense the judgment right away, whether it was towards her choices, lack of skills, or directly to her---there had been judgment coming left and right from family and other people most of her life. Sure, she was used to it but she didnât enjoy it. âNo,â she started, shaking her head. âI was just too busy focusing on other things that seemed a lot more important than learning how to make some fancy dish. Donât get me wrong, if someone has time to make a full fancy dish, good for them.â Paloma couldnât help but exude a little bit of attitude along with her words. âMy parents can be a lot of things, but theyâre not failures so I would kindly appreciate it if you didnât call them anything when you donât know them.â
Rosalind would be lying to herself if she didnât find the whole situation amusing, cruel too, but still amusing. âWhat on earth must you have done for your parents to punish you that much?â Shaking her head, Ros sighed. Although she didnât mind trying to cook, her wife was usually the one making dinner for all of them in their household. âHow about you do something in a slow cooker and test it beforehand. All you would need to do is prepare something, set a timer and youâre done.â Granted, she had done it a few times when she took it upon herself for it to be her turn; no one had ever complained.
âBeats me,â she shrugged, letting out a small sad laugh. Paloma knew she needed to get her act together eventually and cook real meals that werenât an easy fix, but she was so invested in her job sometimes (not that she even got paid enough for it) that sheâd forget to do the simple things like cooking. âI thought about that for sure, do a whole trial and error kind of thing because I just feel like something would go wrong still,â she sighed. âIâm not super hopeless, I promise!â She quickly added.Â
