#WCW...But I just cut for her any day of the week and that's @therealmoworldwide. I'm here quarantined like the rest of us, of course and had a very productive morning of a self tape submission, a virtual meeting with the status of a current contract as a teaching artist and some reading as I prep for my class on Friday. Took a break and made me nourishing food only to receive some real nourishment from the #QueenOfComedy herself when she and her husband, Sydney Hicks, were recent guests on @thedavidbannerpodcast. And as I munch on my cauilflower fries and slurp on my fruit/spinach smoothie, she said a word that spoke to me. And she's been speaking to me for a long time. Now we all know that some of us have had their 2 cents about her and she's been carrying on out in the streets. I even had a friend recently post of her in the opening number the BET Awards on his Facebook page with a caption stating he missed that Mo'nique. I love my friend and no shade, but we can respectfully agree to disagree, if any disagreement at all. But, for me, from The Parkers to Precious to Queens Of Comedy, Baby Boy, Almost Christmas to seeing her at the @improv in Houston.Or, after I bought her a merchandise tshirt of hers as I said some dumb stuff about how much I wish a guy I was seeing at the time could've been there. And the guy wasn't even worth a dime and she looked at me and said to me, 'Why you sweating a man who clearly ain't checking for you?', and gave me a real hug and signed my tshirt, took time to spell my name correctly and signed it with "Dream Big". And I do. I don't punch a clock. And I'm taking my talent and letting it roll however it's gonna roll because you haven't heard from me yet because fear has had me locked me down. But not anymore. We're all afraid to risk it all and especially when you got so much to lose. But even in the fear, it's always been something in me that says I gotta go get it. So thank you Queen. I applaud you for always being you. Like you love us for real. For some of you may know that amongst being an actress, director, writer, producer, all around fantastic human being, I am also a Teaching Artist. And for the last 3 years I have worked in such capacity through @culture_la. @culture_la and @calstatela have teamed up to provide an opportunity to apply for a scholarship to be a part of its Community Teaching Artist Certification Program. Over 60 applicants applied and I was chosen. So is how I'll be spending my Fridays for the next 8 weeks. #AboutLastNight...I went out to the stage reading #TheFertileRliver written by my brother, @vincentterrelldurham. The @roadtheatre on W. Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood was packed. This beautiful piece of work hit home for me because I remember my mom, grandmother and great grandmother talk about #eugenics. Yes Google it. It is a real term. And prior the film, #Claudine, this study, this practice, this method of sterilization was a real procedure that took place in our country ordered by our government, who felt that it was really help improve the lives of Black women and their families, from poor Black women from not being able to reproduce. As always, I am moved by these stories and left in wonderment of the brilliant mind of my friend who's work deserves to be seen more often. And I'm not alone in this thinking. The post show discussion, which was pretty lively, expressed how supportive the theatre community is of him and his work and how they felt there's a need to see more of it. We laughed. We cried. Some of us hung out afterwards and caught up. About earlier today...I attended the #50in50LettersToOurSons presented by @billieholidaytheatre held @wacotheater this afternoon. I, along with 49 other Sistas, were chosen to have ALL 50 letters we have written to our Black sons read this weekend. It's one to write it and it's a totally different experience to hear and see the words, your words cometl to life. #XoshaRoquermore @margaretshugavery @ettappw @keenastar @phyllisyvonnestickney @juanitajennings912 #ElayneTaylor and @kisha_may (whom I was just beyond moved to hear you say my piece, which I thank you 🙏🏽) while @maritrimusic serenaded us like the songstress she is, gave such light and love to these letters. These potent, powerful, funny, honest, gut wrenching words composed these letters to our Black sons today had me feeling ALL the feelings. And it wasn't just because these Queens are names and faces we know, love, respect and admire from film, television and theatre. It was because of the pure joy poured into each piece with its different literary styles, voices, tones and textures of the letters about all of Black sons, whether we birthed them, or not. They are ours and and we love them all was the message I walked with this afternoon in which I moved beyond any words could express. So all I can say is thank you ALL for speaking such life and truth into our words.
