Does scout have any weird hang ups from growing up so poor do you think?
i think he probably has a couple of them, some of which the other mercs have picked up on and others that they haven’t
-he always feels super weird about spending money even though his paychecks make that much less of an issue. he still doesn’t tend to buy himself new clothes (“I’ll just wear my uniform, who cares—“), and will wear out the soles of his shoes until they’re busted to hell to try and put in a request to get them replaced. and when he does spend money, he tends to get things he finds funny, and feels guilty getting anything he might legitimately need.
-there were all kinds of things he didn’t do much growing up that he enjoys as an adult, like going to the movies or getting fast food. but he always feels this uncomfortable pit in his stomach whenever he eats somewhere really really nice for any reason and sees the check.
-despite that, he tends to tip waitresses and stuff way more than the average person, because his Ma was a waitress and plenty of his brothers worked similar jobs at some point and he understands how important that is.
-because he didn’t have much growing up, and ended up feeling bad any time he tried to talk to his Ma about their financial situation, he has no concept of how much he should have in his savings and how long money will last him if he’s smart with it. so he’s saved up a frankly exorbitant amount of money on the off chance that he unexpectedly loses his job, and plans on saving way way way more for if he eventually gets a house somewhere on his own and gets married and has kids and dogs and cats and whatever.
-some of the other mercs were in similar situations at some point in their life, and others weren’t, and Scout always feels kind of like garbage whenever the more educated ones start talking about college and university, because that wasn’t even in the ballpark of something he could try and hope for.
-like everything else that bothers him, he tends to brush it off and pretend it’s no big deal and he didn’t care, and even make jokes about it sometimes towards the mercs who spend more money. Spy tends to get the brunt of those jokes
i could probably think of others but that’s a pretty solid list i think
