Two months ago, I was trying to grab some tampons at a 7/11-type store in Wisconsin. I was zoning out over my choices when I noticed another person in the aisle with me.

She was wearing a hijab, and was probably in her twenties or so.

We were the only people in the store except for the white guy behind the counter.

And then another dude walked in, a beardy, white 40-something.

I was ready to buy my shit and leave but i just stood there, watching that old dude.

The midwest is such a shitshow i swear to god and I just couldn’t leave until that girl left too. I don’t know these men. I wasn’t going to leave the only other woman there, alone at night, with those two white men. Especially not a woman in a hijab.

I loitered and waited til she got her shit and left. I wandered to the front so I could watch her drive away.

I think in the next 4 years or more, if you haven’t already, you better start watching. Don’t leave people alone. Don’t trust anyone. Don’t assume anyone is safe. Don’t believe you’re being paranoid. It’s our duty to watch.

Tonight on my way home, I intentionally drove by a local Islamic community center. It’s on a busy street in a very blue city but still. I just wanted to…see. All was quiet. No graffiti, no vandalism. 

When I got home I sent them a donation and included a note telling them I was glad to have them in our community and wishing them peace and safety.

Do what you can, my dudes.

I just got a response from the Islamic center I donated to.

“Thank you so much for your expression of support and your contribution.  We are a small community, but we are not frightened as we trust in God, and we know we have many friends like you. You are what makes this country great, not the hatemongers. May God bless you and reward you for your kindness.”

He’s going to hate having to meet with people. He’s going to hate having to listen to them talk. He’s going to hate that he can’t do whatever he wants just because he said so. He’s going to hate not being able to just fire people. He think he’s going to be the CEO of America and that isn’t how it works.

I’ve never wished so hard for the good old stodgy wheels of American federal bureaucracy to be as slow and cumbersome as possible.

Just want to point out that Christopher Reeve was considering suicide before Robin Williams showed up. He didn’t just make him laugh, he saved Reeve’s life. Also, he paid for Reeve’s medical bills from the accident.
