25 Days of Snow Globes:Â Day 8 Eilonwy and Taran
To Taran, From Santa
With ribbons in red and green tied around the hilt, a quality training sword rests against Taranâs doorframe. Fastened to the ribbons of the sword is a note in lovely cursive. âFor a young man who will one day be a true warrior, please accept this training sword. Continue always to use your talents for good, and you will always have a spot on the Nice List. Merry Christmas, Taran.â
Without giving much thought to it, Taran stepped outside the small cottage with his everyday clothes, only to realize how cold it had been. He spun on his heel and made his way back to the cottage to cover himself up before the sword resting by the door immediately caught his attention. The boy's eyes widened as he went over to pick it up and look at it in awe. It wasn't long before he noticed the note attached to it. While he read through the nicely written message, his smile widened.
"Thank you sir," Taran said in a low voice before he went back to gazing at the object. A shiver ran down his spine, reminding him how cold it was outside. He laughed quietly to himself and quickly made his way back inside with his gift.

"Arise my messengers of death! Our hour has arrived!"

"Good," she nodded. He must be deathly ill to not be stubborn with me, she joked to herself (though if that was the case, she would probably be dying as well). Eilonwy guided him to the door and abruptly stopped. âDo you have a coat or blanket to wrap yourself within? It might be colder outdoors than it is here.â
He stopped as soon as Eilonwy stopped and quickly nodded. "I do have a coat.. it's-" he paused for a moment and glanced around the room before he spotted his coat sitting on a stool not far from them. Taran carefully made his way over and began to slip into the oversized clothing. He thought of how foolish he must have looked, then again, it was still rather comfortable to him. "I do hope I will grow into this someday," he said sheepishly.

Her eyebrows raised slightly at his retort, you couldnât get those boots in the first place! âOf course, but let us be slow,â she said as she returned her arm to his waist. âI do not believe we should go too far, yes?â
As Taran began to make his way out of the room with Eilonwy's help, he looked to her and shook his head. "No, I suppose there is no need to go far." He slightly pursed his lips, wishing his sickness would finally vanish so they can go spend their time exploring instead. Quietly, he sighed to himself and continued to carefully exit the cottage.

Eilonwy gave him a wide-eyed look. He couldnât even walk to his boots, and yet they were to walk outside? âOh, of course.â She removed her arm from him and went over to retrieve the boots. She took a momentary longing look at the chest, still wondering what the letters contained. Eilonwy brought the shoes back to Taran, and half-joked, âNeed me to put them on for you?â
Taran combed his hair with his fingers for a few moments before Eilonwy came back to him with his boots. Then suddenly, he gave her a small pout and shook his head. "I'm not that ill, Eilonwy." He managed to laugh softly and went on to slip into his shoes. Carefully, he then stood up and realized how much his body still ached, but he disregarded it and nodded. "We can be off now."Â

Eilonwy bit her lip; he didnât seem too convincing. Between his shiver and motionlessness, she began to realize how bad an idea this was. âAre you sure? Perhaps we should take this a bit slower. Donât push yourself, Taran.â She put her arm around his waist as to steady him, should he collapse.
Taran's smile faltered slightly when he noticed how concerned Eilonwy looked. "You mustn't worry," he said, gradually shaking his head. "I do feel better.. but I suppose taking it slow might do for now, like you said." Although he was already eager to step outside, he sat still for a few moments until he recovered from his dizziness. "Can you give me my boots? Right over there," he slightly turned around and gestured to his boots lying right beside the chest.

"Only.. only if you feel like you can get up," she stuttered. Perhaps it was true that fresh air could help him, but Eilonwy wasnât so sure getting to the fresh air would. "I can only help you walk, I canât really carry you should your legs give out," Eilonwy nervously mumbled. She was trying her hardest to gently dissuade him, lest he become angry and insist on going outside.
"It will be fine, Eilonwy," he said, already sitting himself up. Taran eventually peeled the blanket off of him and shivered slightly, but soon disregarded it. Then just when he was going to attempt getting out of his bed, he began to feel rather lightheaded. The boy stayed still for a few moments before looking back to Eilonwy with a weak smile. "See? I feel better already."

"Good, and I will always enjoy yours." She smiled softly before pouting. She was becoming awfully bored. Taran just simply wasnât as fun when he was sick. But she supposed that had to be expected. He was sick. âAre you feeling better? Are you cured, yet?â
Taran suddenly looked back up to her and froze for a moment before he shrugged lightly. "W-Well.. only a little. I still feel rather tired... but I still wish to do something.." he paused and went into thought. "Do you think perhaps getting fresh air can help?"

Eilonwyâs shoulders drooped slightly by Taranâs action. Though he was just fooling, all she wanted for him to do was to scoot closer, so that she be near him for the first time in a while. Yet, he was ill, and that was most inadvisable.Â
"Oh," she said, resurfacing from her thoughts, "I am fairly one-of-a-kind because most princesses are even more irritating than I, âŠshould you believe that," she added with a grin.
Taran made no remark about that, but laughed to himself instead and scooted back slightly. "Well, irritating or not, I will always enjoy your company." He smiled and noticed his gaze suddenly fell on her hands, wishing he could at least hold them for a while.

Eilonwy giggled hard enough she had to gasp before she was able to speak again. âTaran, I donât think there are any other pig-keepers to be more irritating!â Before he could take any offense to that, since she did sound rather rude, Eilonwy poked his leg, âYou are just one-of-a-kind!â
He pouted for a brief moment and purposely scooted a few inches away from her. "If that is what makes me special, then I suppose I'm fine with that," Taran gave her a small smile before letting out a soft laugh. "Does that make you one-of-a-kind as well? Or are all princesses as irritating as you?"

She sighed, âNot as irritating as you, Iâll let you know.â She smiled as he rolled over. At least he was acting as if he was feeling better. âI think you spend time with me to distract yourself from how utterly irritating you are.â
"Just my thoughts."
Taran scoffed quietly and rolled back to face Eilonwy as he tried to hide the small smile forming on his lips. "Is that so? Well, I hardly believe that. Surely there are other pig-keepers much more irritating than me."Â

Eilonwy flinched noticeably, having had no intention to upset the boy. âI was not meaning that literally.â She gently patted his arm, âYou canât go straining yourself, no matter how irritating I am. You will feel even worse, and then you really wont get your duties done!â She managed a small smile, knowing that he really wasnât that upset with her.Â
Taran looked up to her and couldn't help but smile slightly in return. He then continued to speak, but in a lower voice. "Yes, you are very irritating," he jested, "I'm not sure why I still bother to spend time with you to this day." He shook his head and rolled onto his side, facing away from Eilonwy. "Silly girl," he mumbled, playfully rolling his eyes.

Eilonwy gave him a weird look. âTaran, Iâm nearly certain your cold has spread to your head. Something true cannot be something made up either. That defeats the point of it being true.â
She pouted and whisked that silly thought away. âBut, I will tell you something true then. Since that is only possibleâŠ. Well, I am currently sitting with my dear friend, Taran, trying to cure his sickness. I am also wondering how he got to be in such an ill state, although I hypothesize it was because he did something silly, like he often does. How about that?â she asked with a smirk.
Taran chuckled sheepishly before he soon crossed his arms and pouted as Eilonwy went on. "I did no such thing, you silly girl. Feeling ill is the last thing I want to be right now. I'm beginning to think I'm much better off getting my duties done instead!" He paused and slumped down slightly. "I must be very ill to be saying that."

Eilonwy fought the urge to push him back into reclining after he blew his nose. âWell, what would you like me to âchatter' about? I do have difficulty in talking pointlessly, if you should believe it. Do you want a make-believe story or something true?â
He momentarily rubbed his chin and gave her a small grin. "I think the two combined might sound rather interesting," he said with a small crack in his voice. Quickly, he cleared his throat and went on with a lower voice. "Or perhaps just something true if that is much easier for you."
