Friday night was one of those “how and why is this happening?” moments. We’d been nominated as a finalist in the Weekly Times Coles Farmer of the Year awards and all around us in the Melbourne Botanic Gardens were these absolute champions of agriculture from all corners of Australia. Reassuringly, they were all also asking the same question! But for us, it comes down to six lifetimes of change and adaptation. The nomination was for the “Dennis Family” - comprising Al and Jemma (for growing Polwarth wool and pastured eggs), Tom and Jason (for producing Polwarth yarn and woolcraft tourism) and Wendy and Dave for adapting the Polwarth breed for woolcraft and continuing as mentors and helpers. It also acknowledges the preceding four generations for developing the Polwarth breed from a merino nucleus in 1840. While the award of Innovation was given to the very deserving Tommerup Family in Queensland, we came away with so much inspiration and motivation to dig deeper into our (rather unconventional) take on farming. This is a shared moment of joy – with all our customers for giving us cause to pursue our work and dreams. Another little Thailand story. A few of Tom's favourite things...travel, Thailand and speaking Japanese. Can you imagine Tom's excitement while doing a bit of wool research in Thailand, when he came across a yarn shop with a group of Japanese ladies working on their craft. Tom was quick to introduce himself and find out they were working on macrame bags! (Not Polwarth 😥) We soon found out, that although they stock quite a bit of yarn, a woolen jumper isn't required in Thailand. The natural dye gang have been at it again in the Tarndie dye studio! Not sure who's hiding behind some of these works 😉, but they have turned out great. The samples shown are using Osage, Sappanwood and Indigo!
