SwatchRoom is on fire!
Big things have been happening recently at SwatchRoom! We have been having exciting client meetings/presentations for new projects, and were just announced as a winner of 50 on Fire in the 'design' category! Thank you InTheCapital for such a great event.
Our gallery is also open every Saturday in the month of December from 12-5pm, for holiday gifts, local art, & custom goods. We have loved meeting everyone that came by and we hope to see you next Saturday!

Creative Crush: Hannah Rothstein
San Francisco based artist Hannah Rothstein created a new series called 'How Famous Artists Would Plate Thanksgiving Meals.' It is exactly what it sounds like.... Rothstein plates Thanksgiving foods in the typical style of various famous artists. But we love the way this idea turned out!

Well-Dressed Tablescapes
Here at SwatchRoom, we like all things out-of-the-ordinary. And we see the holidays as a time to express yourself through decor. Who says decor has to be traditional?? Holiday decor can be both festive AND expressive of your personal taste. Here are some unique, unconventional, and well-dressed tablescapes to inspire.

We love pretty much everything Justina Blakeney is involved with :) and she does not disappoint when it comes to her fall inspired tablescapes. Her suggestions are thrifty, clever, and super inspiring to do something unexpected. Here are some of her ideas:
Who says you have to use a traditional tablecloth? Blakeney suggests using scarves, dyed cloth, or craft paper to create a beautiful tablecloth. Napkins - mismatched vintage napkins add a variety of color to the scene.
Think about layers - small plates, large plates, and glassware.

Creative Crush: McNabb and Co.
We love the City Series by McNabb and Co. - and especially because of his tagline on his website "making something from nothing." This is a concept we are all about, and we love to see other artists' interpretations of this. SwatchRoom makes something out of nothing through repurposing objects, and by taking materials and doing unexpected things. Such as... using PVC pipes to make a forest of trees, using a 3D printer to create a Mini Mount Rushmore wall, creating a floor out of pennies, using artist materials to create a 3D stencil, and many more.

Another awesome factor of the City Series is that McNabb and Co. makes everything out of scrap wood - each piece is cut on a bandsaw. Here are some photos of the City Series:

We just started working on some new, 100% custom samples for an exciting project. These samples involve hand-drawn designs, which led us to find artist Marilyn Rondón. Her colorful murals are super inspiring - some of them are done in sharpies. Her work is pretty amazing, take a look:

custom art makes all the difference
We are very excited to announce that Second State officially opens TODAY!
We have greatly enjoyed working with Reese Gardner and the Wooden Nickel Bar Company on this project. We have worked with this team in the past on Irish Whiskey and Copperwood Tavern, and are currently working with them on Orange Anchor and Union Social as well.
Second State used to be the Mighty Pint - and you may not even recognize the new space! It is filled with reclaimed wood, plush fabrics, gray and blue tones, and some custom pieces of art. One of our favorite elements in the design of Second State is the custom art created specifically for the space.
SwatchRoom artists worked to create 5 pieces on wood panels, inspired by folk art, which can be found hanging above the booths on the first floor of Second State.

SwatchRoom artists also created 3 larger canvas pieces, inspired by vintage ads and Pennsylvania state fair flags. These can be found next to the bar, and hanging in the stairway.

SwatchRoom also created a custom Keystone stencil for the men's and women's rooms. We played with the arrangement of this stencil to create fun patterns.

Creative Crush: We Make Carpets
Some people say less is more - but sometimes, we like to think MORE is more. Here's why: repetition in design can create a stunning effect for the viewer.
One of our favorite projects that we did involving repetition in design is the Mini Mount Rushmore wall at Teddy. Believe it or not, this wall all began with a 3D printer. How we did it: we created an image, 3D printed the image, made a rubber mold from the 3D printed model, and then poured plaster into the mold over and over! We then mounted all of the Mini Mount Rushmores on the wall, filling in all of the gaps to match.

Which brings us to our Creative Crush on We Make Carpets.

This group of three "temporary contemporary artists" creates carpets out of everyday objects that are actually not meant to be walked on, or even touched. From afar, each carpet may look like an actual carpet, but the close ups will surprise you. Through the close up photos, the viewer is able to get a sense of the time and patience that went into placing each specific piece in it's specific spot.

SwatchRoom Goes West
We are very excited to announce that we are currently working on an installation for Twitter Santa Monica! Some of the SwatchRoom team has headed to the west coast this week to install the piece we have made in DC. Here are some in progress photos of the pieces - installation photos coming soon!

But this isn't our first project with Twitter :) We recently did a custom installation at TwitterDC consisting of 5,000 laser cut feathers and custom stained wood to make a DC flag.
Maximize Your Small Space!
Abbey Slitor and Warren Weixler, co-founder of SwatchRoom, were just featured in the Washington Post in an article called "Small Space Living: A 707-square-foot rental in Shaw." We know they both have great taste :) and it was really awesome to see this feature on their beautiful, clutter-free apartment with creative space saving techniques. We've gotta say, we are impressed.

Maggie O'Neill x Creative Mornings DC
What is Creative Mornings?
Creative Mornings began with a desire for an ongoing and accessible event for the creative community in NYC. The idea was to host a talk one Friday morning each month, which would be free of charge and open to anyone - with coffee included. Creative Mornings has grown into a global series of talks, where each gathering provides a space to celebrate creativity and to connect with others.

With a new theme each month, Creative Mornings is able to host a wide variety of talks from "design legends to hometown heroes." Some of the themes are Arts + Technology, Happiness, The Future, and Color - to name a few.
Why are we so excited about Creative Mornings?
We are so excited about Creative Mornings because Maggie O'Neill has been selected to speak within the series on Color! Fitting, no?

Recently, we have been seeing names we recognize in the Creative Mornings DC talks. Gregg Deal, Philippa Hughes - both amazing, talented, and driven creatives that are known throughout the city. We are so happy to be in such great company.
