ALICIA SILVEERSTONE AS CHER HOROWITZ CLUELESS (1995)
pacey and joey in every episode → a weekend in the country (3x12)
My favourite Paxton trait is how he just wants to understand other people (probably because everyone labels him and doesn't try to understand him).
When he asks Devi why she went to the coyote, to the parallel of asking Ben why he's so stressed out.
He just brings out honest conversations and allows people to be vulnerable in a safe space.
For that, I will always love him.
The first time Feyre was painted and dressed up by the shadow sisters, so Rhysand could take her to the midsummer party, I noticed this sentence: “My hair was coiled around a small golden diadem imbedded with lapis lazuli.”
Let me over analyse and explain why this sentence is significant. When Rhysand brings Feyre into the throne room all she can think about is how debased she looks with her sheer gown. In her mind Amarantha looks better because she’s dressed modestly. But lets forget about the dresses for a moment and look at what’s on Feyre’s head and not on Amaranthas, a diadem. What is that exactly? Well a diadem is a type of crown usually worn by monarchs, an emblem for regal power and dignity. Not only did Rhysand give Feyre a CROWN but a crown with a lapis lazuli. What’s the big deal about lapis lazuli, you ask?
Well, Lapis Lazuli is historically one of the most sought after stones. It has always symbolized the starry night (so basically the night court). Also, if you believe in crystals having some sort of “powers” lapis lazuli is often used for its strong emotional components, known for helping people overcome abuse, trauma, depression and grief (Which clearly Feyre needs help with).
Let’s also not forget the discussion between Rhysand and Amarantha when they stroll into the throne room. “What have you done with my captive?” she said but her smile doesn’t reach her eyes. “We made a bargain… one week with me at the night court every month in exchange for my healing services…for the rest of her life.” This was Rhysand telling Amarantha that Feyre is his and not hers. Not only did Rhysand save the life of the human that Amarantha wants dead, he waltzed right up to the foot of her throne, and in front of all the courts, announced not so subtly that he thinks Feyre is going to beat Amarantha and he’s going to support her through it all. Feyre was so wrapped up in her concern over Tamlin that she believed this whole thing was just a way for Rhysand to torment him, when in reality it had nothing to do with Tam. It was Rhysands way to say to Amarantha that her reign won’t last forever. This was Rhysand rebelling against his abuser.

It’s midnight, I’m still sick, and I'm squealing that Paxton STILL saves Devi at parties.

Paxton and relationships
I find it so fascinating how the show seems to have remixed the quintessential 'jock' stereotype a little bit. I mean, isn't it curious how in the two seasons we've gotten of the show, Paxton has not had a steady/formal/official girlfriend???? In other shows, the jock is generally hooked up with the queen cheerleader, or the prom queen designate or whatever other popular girl archetype there is in the tv world. But other than having a few girls draped all over him in a few scenes, Paxton hasn't really dated anyone formally on the show. Devi will be the first!
It's not like Paxton is some retiring, shy guy who is petrified of women and vice versa. We know girls fawn over him, we know he's the most-desired at school, and we know he's well aware of his effect on the opposite sex. But then we see he's also apparently not aware of 'date etiquette', which is very interesting. Allowing his friends to pretty much sit on on his dates suggests Paxton has never really had much of a desire to be spend one on one time with girls outside of hookups. Which, typical teenage boy right? But we then see him spend a lot of time with Devi without hookup activity. I keep going back to their study session, where they end up beat-boxing/rap-competing with each other. That was honest to goodness just wholesome fun and it's probably a first for Paxton. As are many things he experiences with Devi.
I think it's pretty cool that the show has its principal male character, who they've gone out of the way to establish as sex-on-legs, be the character that has not been shown to have any type of official relationship. Ben, Eleanor, Fabiola, heck even Aneesa who just showed up have all been shown in relationships but not Paxton. I feel like that's a deliberate choice. It would be one thing if we saw Paxton with a different girl every episode, we could then just label him as a Casanova and not think anything of him not having an actual relationship. But he's not presented that way either.
Could it be that there's a larger story at play here and we're going to see this unfold more in future seasons? Or is it a deliberate choice to sort of "equalize" Paxton and Devi in a specific way, in that this could very well be the first proper relationship for either of them! Whatever the rationale is, it's definitely one of the more interesting things about the way the show is shaping Paxton as character. I'm pleasantly surprised and intrigued.
Precious Daxton moments
Was thinking about what my favourite Daxton scenes have been over the course of the series and why. A quick list:
5. ‘I don’t fake kiss and tell’ This is the first time that Paxton forgives Devi. Unfortunately it won’t be the last but in this case Paxton forgives her not because he loves her or has feelings for her that he recognizes. He forgives her because he’s Paxton. This scene says so much to me about him, and it’s validated when we see him repeatedly move past slights and attacks as the series progresses. Paxton is not a grudge holder. He’s not vindictive and he certainly isn’t vengeful. In any other teen show the high school jock would’ve probably exposed Devi’s lies for what they are but Paxton takes the heat and keeps his mouth shut. They’re cool he says. And then, the shows SHOWS us how cool they are. For a few seconds, they sit in silence, next to each other, there’s an easy harmony between them. No need to fill the silence with inane small talk, they’re natural and comfortable and cool with each other. That ease is my favourite thing about their relationship.
4. ‘.. we used to hook up’ Paxton and Devi studying together at home is a VIBE. I love how one minute they’re exchanging playful banter about academics and then suddenly they’re slipping into a palpable state of sexual tension that turns the atmosphere electric. These two have chemistry and it shows. Paxton knows exactly what he’s doing here, and Devi is simply no match for his charm. She’s flustered and lost for words and damn it so are we! Though there’s no kissing or making out, I find this scene very hot. More of this please.
3.’ It feels like everyone in my life is just done with me’. Having just been humiliated in front of her peers, and rejected by her best friends, Devi is driven home by the only soul at that night that felt sympathy for her and acted on it. She’s feeling the weight of her own actions and their consequences, she’s almost resigned to being friendless and alone. It slips from her, in a moment of vulnerability and Paxton just takes it in. Then before she can gather her walls back up, and before he loses his nerve, he leans over and kisses her. Softly but firmly, chastely but there’s no mistaking the desire behind it. It’s not a coincidence that Devi in arguably her lowest moment socially ends up being rescued, comforted and desired by Paxton. We don’t see it explicitly until the next season but he’s the one who’s never ‘done with her’.
2. I just wanted to say thank you. I love this scene for all the good stuff it gives us, the rain, wet Paxton, the killer soundtrack, the awesome kissing. All good, delightful stuff. But I really love this scene because Paxton says thank you to Devi for her help. We often talk about how selfish Devi can be, as a friend and as a daughter and how hurtful her self absorption has been to others. And it’s true. And Devi is troubled by how frequently her actions screw things up. But Devi is also rarely acknowledged or recognized for her efforts when she’s helpful or being selfless. And I love that Paxton direct and clear-headed, says THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR ME. I can only imagine how good that must have felt to Devi. Almost as good as the kissing I’d bet!
1. ‘Who cares what people think, you do you Vishwakumar’ As season 1 unfolded, one of the primary things Devi struggled with was acceptance. Accepting what had happened to her, starting to come to terms with her trauma but also accepting herself, the things she wished she could improve on (her temper). Paxton gently calls her out on her frequent loss of control but without judgement, and then goes on to ask about the one thing she’s particularly sensitive about that day, her ethnicity. Devi is also struggling to embrace all that makes her, including her culture, and Paxton, totally unknowingly encourages her to just be her. His use of her ethnic last name when Devi’s been subjected to “David” all season long just hammers home the point. And THEN Paxton goes to leave, turns around and tells Devi that she in all her brown, ethnic glory, looked ‘cool in that outfit’. People, it’s not just about the superficial compliment, as great as that is, it’s about the acceptance of who and what Devi is, even if it was only in that small moment in time. What Devi hears Paxton say is “I see you and what I see is good”. She beams, her face lights up, gratitude and pleasure written all over it. And he smiles at her, and turns away, unware of what an impact he’s just had. Beautiful.
I miss them so much your honour
top TEN daxton moments
SO IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER and i thought about ranking but my adhd brain is saying NO today:
1. car ride
you ever just watch a scene you’re like “that’s cinema”? well this scene is THAT everything was perfect and atmospheric from the music to the lights to the shots TO THE WAY THEY KEPT LOOKING AT EACH OTHER and keep missing the other’s looks until THEIR GLANCES ACTUALLY DO MEET AND IT’S TOO MUCH FOR DEVI AND SHE HAS TO LOOK AWAY to the shot of paxton’s hand on his thigh that is so personal to me and just that TENSION that made me go “this is IT they are IT”! and i love this scene PARTICULARLY because i think it’s a great turning point in their relationship where they’re finally on the same page and have a HEIGHTENED awareness of each other’s presence and they’re both anticipating something to happen AND THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT BUT IT’S EXCITING AND IT’S EXCITING FOR ME AS A VIEWER TO WATCH
2. kiss
um i think the gifset speaks for itself but as far as ship kisses go, for me it ranks UP THERE and it’s just so well shot and the lighting is great and it’s just so PURE and and even when they pull away i love that they just gaze into each other’s eyes for a bit and they both have that spellbound look on their faces and paxton still has his thumb on her chin and devi just has that WOW look on her face and she deserves her first kiss to be this good and nice good for her GOOD FOR THEM
3. paxton and devi talking in the hallway on ganesh puja it’s such a short scene but it’s so meaningful and devi’s annoyed but paxton makes her feel better and she LIGHTS UP AT HIS COMPLIMENT and paxton makes an observation about her temper and is totally non-judgmental about it, just another fact about her he’s gonna catalogue in his little “things about devi” part of his brain AND PAXTON’S GOT JOKES 4. “you look great here”
listen he’s been looking at these pictures for awhile and probably even helped becca pick them out AND HE IS JUST SO EXCITED TO SHOW DEVI AND HE’S ON HIS LAPTOP FOR EVERYONE TO SEE. SEE THAT HE IS LOOKING AT DEVI’S PICS, FULL BRIGHTNESS ON AND AGAIN, HE TELLS HER SHE LOOKS GREAT AND SHE’S SMILING
5. chatting while devi’s putting on his clothes
I MEAN SHE’S PUTTING ON HIS CLOTHES AND SHE STILL HAS THOSE SWEATS THAT PROBABLY SMELL LIKE HIM AND HE IS NEVER GETTING THEM BACK AND PAXTON’S GOT MORE JOKES DON’T BE SHY YOU GOOF GIVE US SOME MORE
6. paxton apologizing to devi + “THE CLASSIC LOOKBACK”
FIRST OF ALL HE IS APOLOGIZING AFTER A DAY AND THE BAR IS ON THE GROUND BUT HE IS RAISING THE BAR ALREADY OWNING UP TO JUMPING THE GUN AND MAKING ASSUMPTIONS and he starts to even open up to her and you can tell that’s the first time he’s done it because he has to reel his oversharing in AND THEY SHARE A LAUGH and he’s being a polite boy and saying sorry to nalini about her polio EVEN THOUGH THAT IS NOT A THING but what’s important to note is that the LISTENS to what devi says, even the throwaway comments HE PAYS ATTENTION TO HER AND THEN WE HAVE THAT LOOKBACK!!! HE IS INTRIGUED HE WANTS TO KNOW MORE AND FIGURE HER OUT!!!
7. hospital scene
HE BRINGS HER A DRINK WITH A STRAW ALREADY IN IT because he is considerate and he’s sitting on her bed and doesn’t even think about their proximity BUT HE IS SO CLOSE and already feels comfortable being that close to her and he’s asking her about the coyote and devi’s confiding in him about her dad and he totally takes it in stride and doesn’t walk eggshells around her AND HE WOULD HAVE STAYED ALL NIGHT AND TAKEN HER HOME if it weren’t for nalini!!!!
8. “coyote girl!”
uhh so the part where he puts his arm around her during their presentation and just showing physically supporting her in what initially felt like a mortifying moment for her
9. paxton asking devi to sit with him
HE IS COMMITTED TO GETTING TO KNOW HER AND BE HER FRIEND AND THAT ALSO MEANS TRYING TO INCORPORATE HER INTO HIS SOCIAL CIRCLE BECAUSE HE WANTS TO SEE MORE OF HER HE’S IN THIS ALL THE WAY i’m very sad this scene was cut short though
10. when they first try to have sex and paxton grabs her hand to run down his chest it’s just such a BOLD MOVE on paxton’s part of COURSE it was too much for devi she thought they’d get right to it immediately but it’s like oh wow foreplay maybe???? that’s on the table???
“Thanks for the kiss, I mean, the kiss, I mean the clothes!”
