AAA video game publisher voice: "Look. The goose layed a golden egg, and that's nice! Everyone loved that egg. But keeping the golden goose means paying for bird feed and I don't want to, so I killed the goose."
I was wondering if you could explain “fandom is marketing”? I think I get what you mean but then also maybe I don’t?
If something has a big fandom, publishers and studios know they can make money off it. This is why we see publishers openly acquiring and selling things that were originally posted as fanfic, like Alchemised, Heated Rivalry, etc. It’s why the horrid wizard woman considers people participating in her fandom to be supporting her political causes.
Word of mouth is the most effective way to sell people on media, and fandom is word of mouth that costs the creators/owners nothing. Doing Fandom Stuff used to be subversive, but media companies have now figured out that fandom is a form of advertising and they’re no longer worried about it. Those of us who still think of fandom like it’s a livejournal-era secret club we can never let the corporations discover have got to update our self-concept
I did not spend years of my life at university studying rome in classes that were over 50% women to let someone say "rome may be for the guys" on my post!!!
men aren't obsessed with Rome they're obsessed with being patriarchs who get to subjugate everyone around them. He doesn't care about Pliny the Elder, he's having wet dreams where he gets to be Caesar. It's unironically the new vegas thing, we're living in an age beyond on-the-nose satire. This was also mussolini's deal

Some mice, for your consideration.
🐁 Squeaking of which, you can wishlist the game on Steam! 🐁
it's a little known fact but actually the correct and most effective form of political action (and in fact the only way to make the world a better place) is telling people on tumblr they're doing something wrong and that they should feel bad when they say something you don't like.
"our age of bronze is collapsing" would actually be a great line to put in the mouth of cassandra in like an adaptation of the iliad, or the trojan women, or oresteia
a big-budget adaptation of the homeric stories would be pretty well-served with cassandra as hte primary viewpoint character, if you wanted to do modern themes and such. The nature of her curse of prophecy is that you're free to do anachronistic dialogue or insights through her, and because she's cursed never to be believed you don't even have to worry about any of it breaking the plot. Cassandra can, uniquely, quite plausibly have a modern mindset. You would also get bonus woke points into the bargain.
Happy 3rd anniversary, Baldur's Gate 3!
This post is a zombie. 🧟♀️ Pick one of the answers to see if you were bit or not. (There are 5 bite results out of 12 under the cut.) Best of luck. My deadeye is awaiting to meet any infected at the entrance of camp.

The reason your snacks are unsatisfying is that you need both carb and protein.
Carb starts your engine, protein keeps it going.
No carb, engine don’t start. No protein, engine dies out fast.
Easy carb add on:
Cookie
Fruit (canned or fresh)
Chips
Piece of bread
Popcorn
Crackers
Easy protein add on:
Nuts
Spoonful of nut butter
Cheese
Roasted chickpea snacks
Glass of milk (dairy or non dairy)
Small canned sausages or similar
Sugar in there.
I am pleased by people messaging me telling me that after adding a carb or protein to their snacks or meals they feel more satisfied all day. Yes, my plan is working. People are getting through their days with less hangry.
"biblically accurate" is such a pet peeve of mine like it means nothing and don't remind me the bible exists thanks

sort of a meandering thought more than anything, but one downside of moodboard-aesthetic subcultures having so much presence online (applies to punk obviously, but I was thinking about electronic music adjacencies here) is that there isn't really an "in" to a scene if there's no way to enter it with something people already within it want from you, and that probably has something to do with people kinda spinning their wheels and feeling miserable about not knowing how to meet friends with shared interests
like in an ideal world all anyone wants from you is your presence and they don't mean anything untoward by it, but in the material world, whether virtual or physical, "we are in possession of music that we know the other person would like to hear" is just such a powerful and immediate bonding point, and you really do see the difference in communities where shared interests facilitate often literal exchange between people
fandom as a social organisation vector is an obvious method for getting around that, but you also see it reflected within it, where the most readily available shared interests don't facilitate a lot of friendmaking, but things like "needing speakers of three languages to produce cross-referenced translations of print-only material" end up forming decades-long microculture
