French novelist Jules Verne was born #onthisday in 1828. His fantastic tales of voyage and adventure have lent themselves to many wonderful illustrations but perhaps none so captivating as those by Émile-Antoine Bayard for Around the Moon (1870) — https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/emile-antoine-bayard-s-illustrations-for-around-the-moon-by-jules-verne-1870 #otd
Children playing shop in the kindergarten. Valday, Novgorod region of Russia (1980s)
I so remember playing it. It was fun at the time. Kids in general wanted to be astronauts or shop keepers. Weird but true. I think it had something to do with food shortage.
A mother Kermode Bear with her two black cubs. Sometimes called Spirit Bears, this subspecies is incredibly rare (only about 150 exist). They are not albinos, but get the creamy coloured fur from a recessive gene.
Fascinating creatures. Super cool.
“1960s. The Space Moscow” - exhibition in the Moscow Space Museum, open until December 10, 2021.
“Saturn” vacuum cleaner, “Sputnik” shaving machine, “Comet” tape player, and many more space-themed everyday life objects.
I need to remember this for the next time I’m in Moscow!
A lot of these bring memories of childhood in the USSR.

My piece for this year’s GAAM show is called “Moon Spring”, and it’s obviously inspired by Botticelli’s Spring. For a chance to take this home…you should just go to GAAM!

“Nabokov happened to find on his desk a yellow vase with blue flowers. He went to the blackboard, wrote ‘yellow blue vase,’ and asked the students what it said. ‘Yellow blue vase,’ of course. 'That is almost “I love you” in Russian,’ he explained, and repeated the phrase, ya lyublyu vas, adding: 'That is probably the most important phrase that I will teach you.’“
