When Kurt said he’d be the only one that get it, Blaine let out a small noise of agreement “Exactly what I was thinking when I called you. Don’t get me wrong, I can stand up for myself usually, and I’ve had to throw the occasional punch here and there while we’ve been on the road when someone makes a comment about me, or anyone, being gay, but it’s different when it’s your family. It hits you in such a different way. I can’t say I don’t care what strangers think, because that’s actually something we have to think about as part of our jobs, but if people don’t like you, it’s easier to not take it to heart you’re just like “oh okay”, but …” Blaine shook his head “It’s stupid… I don’t know why they invited me over. Did they suddenly think I was straight now? Or that i’d changed? They had to have known that I would have… I dunno, gotten gayer since the last time they saw me?” Blaine shook his head at the words, giving a little laugh.
“I think I’m okay to drive now” Blaine breathed, nodding a little even though Kurt couldn’t see him. He wasn’t okay, but the distraction of Kurt talking meant he was able to calm down a little. He wasn’t crying anymore, which was good.
“I want to see you too” Blaine breathed out, a small smile on his face once he said the words.
He was crushing hard. He knew it. He also didn’t care. He was a little nervous to be going to Kurt’s house though. It was a little early to be doing the home visits. Especially right now when he really didn’t feel like himself.
As if Kurt could read his mind, a text message came through with the others address. Blaine reached out to tap it, letting his GPS take over and start to reroute his trip. He wasn’t too far from Kurt’s place, about 45 minutes out, and he was coming up to the right turn off.
A part of him thought about declining the offer. It was ridiculous to go to Kurt’s home right now. He didn’t know Kurt, and he certainly wasn’t in the right frame of mind for it. Would Kurt be expecting something from him? He wasn’t sure he would be up for anything like that. He hadn’t even had enough time to even social media stalk the guy, which he had planned on doing while he was travelling back home. He didn’t even think anything badly about it. He just… wanted to know who Kurt was.
“Hang on a sec, yeah?” Blaine said as he got himself organized while he was driving, making sure that he knew where he was going. He hadn’t meant to interrupt Kurt talking, but he didn’t want to miss anything the other was saying.
Blaine had to tell himself that wasn’t the case. Kurt did genuinely seem like he wanted to spend time with Blaine, but they really hadn’t been in a setting that wasn’t before or after sex or hooking up. Would they even get along?
Blaine laughed when the GPS started saying names of towns incorrectly, then prompted Kurt to keep talking, explaining what he was doing.
“No, I love them! Sometimes I sneeze when I’m near animals, and you know how much they love that…” Blaine paused to laugh “but that’s usually when I already have an allergy flare up unrelated to animals and then inhale some, you know, dog hair or something, but usually I’m good. My best friend has dogs, which means that 90% of the time they’re at my place” Blaine chuckled, shaking his head “and you totally needed to know all of that” Blaine groaned.
“Yeah, I can understand that,” Kurt said that the homophobia was worse when it came from your family, “They’re the people who are supposed to love you no matter what, after all.” It wasn’t something Kurt had to deal with - not really, anyway. His father was incredibly supportive of Kurt, and while he would make mistakes from time to time, Kurt knew that his dad would have his back. But there was a time where their relationship was strained. Back when his dad was still dating Carole, Kurt knew that Finn was the son he wanted all along, and every day Kurt felt like he was going to lose his father to the overly tall football player. It wasn’t until his father defended him when Finn insulted him that Kurt realised that his dad had his back all along.
However, those days when Kurt felt like he was losing his dad to Finn were still clear in his mind. And it was his sexuality and interests that were causing that rift. So to the smallest degree, Kurt knew how Blaine felt. The bassist just obviously had it far worse than Kurt ever did.
Kurt managed a weak laugh and shook his head, “Your parents are assholes, Blaine. You deserve better than that.”
It was hard to not to swoon at Blaine saying he wanted to see him, too. Of course, the older boy did - why else would Blaine be calling him? It didn’t necessarily mean Blaine was planning on Kurt inviting him over, but knowing that he was on Blaine’s mind made Kurt’s heart skip a few beats.
It was like he wasn’t the only one who was already starting to develop a crush. Kurt knew it was way too soon, but there was something about Blaine what was pulling Kurt in, and it was taking all of his strength to not bring those walls down. As nice as Blaine seemed to be, Kurt knew it would be stupid to trust him completely. He’d been screwed over before - Kurt wasn’t going to let it happen again just because a guy was nice to him and the sex was good.
…But part of Kurt wanted to see if Blaine was worth bringing those walls down.
“Really? Because that sounds like you’re allergic, Blaine,” Kurt chuckled softly, “But if your friend has them, and if the worst that happens is just you sneezing, you should be fine.”
Hearing the sounds of Blaine’s GPS butchering the street and town names, Kurt’s eyes widened. So Blaine actually was coming here? Kurt knew now he’d need to get the house sorted.
And by ‘get the house sorted’ Kurt meant ‘hide all his embarrassing photos his dad insisted on having around the house and shove them into his dad’s room so Blaine won’t laugh at them the second he saw them’.
“Oh, don’t be silly, Blaine,” Kurt rolled his eyes, “I don’t mind. I want to know more about you.”
Kurt kept talking to Blaine, hoping that even though they were talking about nothing significant, that it was helping Blaine keep his mind off things. The last thing he needed was for Blaine to think he was irritating or over overbearing when the only thing Blaine wanted was to actually relax.
Blaine’s timing was near perfect; as soon as Kurt put the last old photo in his dad’s room. Kurt let out a small, shaky breath, and once he made sure he didn’t look *too* dishevelled in his dad’s mirror, he ran downstairs to greet Blaine.
As soon as he opened the door, Kurt smiled at the sight of Blaine, “Hey,” he said, leaning over to hug the other tightly, “You doing okay?”
It wasn’t until Blaine had parked the car and gotten out before he realised that he was still dressed up from dinner. He knew Kurt had already seen him earlier, but he hadn’t had to experience the full judgemental eyes. He hoped Kurt wouldn’t be turned off his appearance now. He didn’t really dress like this anymore. This was the old Blaine. New Blaine on a day to day liked to be more… casual.
He’d rolled his sleeves up while he’d been driving, and his top few buttons were undone as well since he felt as though he couldn’t breathe the more worked up he got.
Tonight had been rough, and now, his stomach was doing flips at how nervous he was.
Blaine glanced at the home in front of him, giving a small smile. It was a nice place. It just had a nice vibe to it. It was welcoming, which in that moment, was all Blaine needed. He just needed someone safe to be. He was so far away from everything that was safe to him right now. He approached and knocked softly, glancing down at the time and then either side of him, hoping not to wake any neighbours or anything of the sort.
Truthfully, Blaine wasn’t sure what to do. Did he kiss Kurt? Hug him? Wave a hand? He wasn’t sure what they were. Friends? Friends with benefits?
Blaine was glad that Kurt had leaned over and hugged him immediately. His shoulders were stiff at first, but as soon as he felt Kurt’s arms lock around him, Blaine relaxed, his body practically melting against the other.
“Hey” Blaine said softly, bringing his hands up to rest on Kurt’s back. His face practically buried itself into the crook of Kurt’s neck. He stayed like that for a few seconds before eventually letting go and ending the hug.
“Yeah. I’m okay” Blaine gave a little sigh “I don’t know if i’m just annoyed at them or myself or —”
Before Blaine could finish he heard heavy footsteps coming down the stairs and suddenly there was a dog forcing them apart by pushing himself between the two of them. Blaine laughed and took a step back, glancing down. He hadn’t even realized there was a smaller dog beside Kurt this entire time, just watching like an old judgemental man, and now joined by a bigger dog, the one Blaine had seen with the easter bunny ears, sitting between Kurt and Blaine, tail wagging from either side so hard it was bashing against the floor.
“Hello!” Blaine grinned as he looked down at the happy face before presenting his palm. Which was promptly licked. That was all the warning Blaine needed to start petting the dog. He was instantly on his feet, going completely wild to be receiving pats before throwing itself on his back, demanding belly rubs. Blaine squatted down, giving a laugh as he scratched the dogs stomach before looking up at Kurt “What are their names?”
Kurt smiled softly when he felt Blaine’s face burying into his neck. He held Blaine a little tighter and pressed a small kiss to the side of his head. It was rare for Kurt to let his guard down like this and for him to feel the need to actually comfort someone. It also wasn’t something Kurt really had the opportunity to do any more; his friendships with the New Directions were practically nonexistent now and the last thing the Skanks talked about were their emotions.
The hug ended too soon, and Kurt gave a small smile when Blaine pulled back. Kurt nodded slowly as he listened to Blaine, but before Blaine could finish speaking, thundering footsteps cut him off and Kurt felt himself being shoved out of the way. Kurt stumbled a little and managed to stop himself from falling into the wall.
“Alexander!” Kurt said exasperatedly. He didn’t even need to look down to know his golden retriever was the culprit. It happened every time someone came into the house. The second they stepped through the door, they would be ambushed and would be forced into giving Alexander all the love.
Kurt smiled fondly at his dog, and gently scooped up Bark Jacobs when Kurt realised he was at his feet. Bark Jacobs would probably be fine, but Alexander was overly excited right now, and there had been too many times when he accidentally trampled his little brother.
Thankfully Blaine didn’t seem to care at all about Alexander’s insistence. If anything, he was encouraging it. Kurt couldn’t stop himself from smiling more. He didn’t know what was going to happen between him and Blaine, but knowing that Blaine would actually appreciate and show affection to his pets made Kurt knew he wanted Blaine around around a lot more in some capacity.
Blaine’s question made Kurt’s stomach drop a little. It wasn’t too bad on it’s own, and for Alexander and Fiyero, Kurt wasn’t embarrassed to share those names.
But Bark Jacobs? There was no way that Blaine would be able to take him seriously after that.
“Well this big lump here, is Alexander,” Kurt said as he gently prodded the large dog with his foot, and unsurprisingly, Alexander was enjoying the cuddles too much to care. “My cat hasn’t joined us yet. I think he’s probably sitting on my bed right now, pissed that I left him for five minutes. His name’s Fiyero. And this guy…”
Kurt turned to look at Bark Jacobs and gently scratched behind his ear, “This little guy is Jake,”
As soon as the name left Kurt’s mouth, he cringed internally. His father always referred to Bark Jacobs as ‘Jake’ much to Kurt’s chagrin. Any time Kurt would argue and insist his father called Bark Jacobs by his proper title, his dad would respond with ‘I’m not calling him that, Kurt, he’s called Jake!’
So it felt so wrong to call Bark Jacobs as something as basic as ‘Jake’, but at least it was a common enough name for a dog that Blaine wouldn’t think he was a freak for naming his dog that.
“He doesn’t really respond to his name, though. I swear that his ears are painted on sometimes!” It was partly true. Bark Jacobs didn’t often listen when Kurt called on him, but whenever his dad shouted for Jake? Then he’d be completely ignored until he resigned and referred to the small dog by his proper name.
Kurt continued to watch Blaine pet Alexander for a few more moments before speaking again.
“Once he actually lets you move, do you want to go upstairs?” He asked, quirking his eyebrow slightly. Kurt hoped that Blaine would get the intention behind his words. Yes they had a lot of sex over the past few days, but Kurt hoped that Blaine would understand that Kurt didn’t mean anything dirty by it and that he genuinely wanted to just chill out with him.
“I’ve got a bunch of snacks and drinks in my room if you want anything, and I’m sure you’d like to get changed into something more comfortable,” Kurt said as he quickly looked at Blaine’s outfit. Blaine did look amazing, but it really wasn’t what Kurt was used to see Blaine wearing and it didn’t exactly look like it would be fun to relax in. “We can watch Netflix or just… talk, if you want. Whatever makes you feel comfortable
