From Marine Corps to Peace Corps
By Will Aurigemma, Special to CNN May 27, 2013
Editor's note: Will Aurigemma served as a Marine communications officer from 2006 to 2010 and a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 2011 to 2013.
The Marines and Peace Corps volunteers with whom I served demonstrated more ingenuity, perseverance, and guts than any other group of people I've known. They also possessed a surplus of something that is vanishing from many other parts of American life: humility.
While nothing compares to the risks our servicemen and women take in combat, the Peace Corps isn't exactly a walk to the local playground. Since its inception in 1961, the Peace Corps has lost at least 287 volunteers to disease, road accidents, crime, and other hazards in their host countries. That's more than twice the number of fallen CIA officers, whose sacrifices are properly commemorated by stars etched into Memorial Wall inside their headquarters.
Kennedy, shortly after taking office, spoke of an "immense reservoir" of American men and women "anxious to sacrifice their energies and time and toil to the cause of world peace and human progress."
To see many of the best people from that reservoir -- the ones who stopped dreaming of their potential to serve and took real action -- take a look at those volunteers in the Marines and the Peace Corps. I really believe you can find the best of America´s youth serving in each of these organizations. And neither organization squanders that resource.

In the hospital with dengue!
My family saying farewell as I head to the hospital.
I raised my fist to the sky and I said every bad and inappropriate word I could think of and even some that were not so very bad. After two plus years in Indonesia, with the finish line in site I now get Dengue Fever.
Monday morning flag ceremony April 22. All the officers were female students in honor of Hari Kartini. Kartini was an Indonesian heroine and pioneer of women's rights.
Earth Day - Hari Bumi
What will you give up for Earth day?
Toilet paper (gave that up a long time ago)
Car or motorcycle (don't have one of those)
Bath and shower (who needs them when you can fling water on yourself with a bucket)
Clothes dryer (that's why we have the sun)
Air conditioner (for those of you that have one, my envy is palpable)
Blow dryer (ha!), straightener (ha ha!), curling iron (get out of here)
My goal is to try not to make any non organic garbage and not use any electronics for one day. That means no packaged foods (Cheetos you will just have to wait for another day), no computer, cell phone, Kindle, ipod, or TV (not that I ever watch the truly stellar Indonesian programming anyway). I will, however, be using my digital camera to document.
And to make things interesting I am forsaking electricity until I run into something in the dark and hurt myself. But until that time- no lights, fan or anything that can be plugged in.
I tried to get my family on board too. My ibu, love her, was into it until I said that it was for a whole day, including the night time. Then she gave me the "you're a crazy American" look. We will see how well this goes.
update:
Garbage = 1 tissue and 1 Malaria pill package
Things were good until 6 pm when the sun set. I sat outside trying to read until the last rays of sunlight slipped below the trees. Then it was boredom. When no one else is willing to sit in the dark with you it become slightly ridiculous. By 7 pm I caved. I listened to Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone on my ipod in the dark. Was this experiment pointless.... impactfully ya. But it sure did firm up my love for electricity.
