I offer my deepest love and condolences to the people of Palestine today. Palestine has my unambiguous support, as do all of its citizens, both in Israel and abroad. There's nothing more I can say that has not already been said more succinctly, more passionately and more powerfully by Palestinians and their allies on the ground in Gaza.
If you want to help, consider donating to Medical Aid for Palestinians. They are a charitable foundation that helps distribute medical supplies within Gaza and the West Bank as well as to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Palestine is subject to cruel and unjust sanctions on nearly every type of importable commodity, and medical supplies like antibiotics, surgical equipment and disposable needles will be vital in the coming days.
You can send cash donations to MAP (US Dollars, Great British Pounds or Euros) here. If you specify that the donation is a Zakat donation, 100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the purchase of supplies in Palestine. I have sent them what I can, and I hope that you can do the same.
As an American, my thoughts about the occupation of Palestine matter very little. The rage, pain and fear that Palestinians have felt for over seventy years is not mine to wield. I hope—naively, perhaps even selfishly—that an act of charity can mean something despite being so distant.
People under threat need money and shelter but they also need hope and love, unbidden, unconditional, in great abundance. Today I discovered the work of Palestinian-American writer Noor Hindi, and her poetry has given me such tremendous hope and love of a type I'd never read before. It is a hope that cannot be destroyed. I believe that when Palestine is free and whole again, it will be that hope, unbowed and radiant, that shines at its heart.
Be strong, people of Gaza. You are not alone.
