are there any tutorials out there for how to get in to recording Video bootlegs? Ive looked and looked and its so difficult to Find.
I’ve heard people say that the little lights on your camera should be covered, preferably with black (electrical) tape. Otherwise, different masters have different tips and tricks.
Hey, I have a question. I want to buy the good quality boots from the masters so I don’t stiff them out of money etc, how do I find/contact them? Thanks! :)

The only remaining semi-public master, sunset, releases on the Yahoo Group, but the most active master has a mailing list that will be difficult for new traders or anyone without an established list to join.
The other newer masters will release on the Musical Exchange Live Journal occasionally.
This isn't much of a confession, but, when you initiate a trade with someone, they should still read your rules right? Cause I think some people don't. But I might be wrong here, so I'd be grateful if you'd let me know!
There’s no way to make sure they read your rules, but I know that I try to follow everyone else’s rules as best I can if they contact me. I don’t know about anyone else and their usual policies.

Not a confession, but does anybody know if /r/westendbootlegs is still taking members? I submitted a request around 3 months ago and have never heard back
I’m already in the subreddit, so I can’t check if they’re still accepting. I believe they have a huge backlog of hopefuls who are looking to join - I’m just not sure how big said backlog is, or how often the mods are checking it.
Does anyone else have any clue? (And best of luck to everyone trying to get in!)

what are your tips on how to record full audio of a show without getting caught??? can i use an iphone?? specifically in hamilton on broadway
Heya! I mean I’ve never been to a Broadway show but when I record audios I just use the voice recording app on my phone, put my phone on airplane mode and set it on my lap. No one ever gets caught recording audios so don’t worry about it!

Don’t forget to turn off all of your alarms, and make sure the phone mic is turned outwards towards the audience. If you plan on recording bows (if that’s even allowed), plan ahead. To be extra safe, feel free to place your playbill over your phone and lap (without covering the mic of course). Audios are the easiest thing to get, just don’t shuffle or whisper and you’ll be fine.

I need every single one of you to know that your posts only show in the first five tags you add to your post. (Tags 6-20 only work on your own blog. Tags 21+ might as well not even be on the post at all.) This means that a post with those above tags will only show under “#Musicals,” “#Boot,” “#Legboot,” “#Bootleg,” and “#Video gift”.
This has been the way Tumblr’s worked for years - I’ve been around since 2011/2012, and only the first five tags have only ever worked for tumblr.com/tagged/whatever+your+tag+is . (It also clutters the page for anyone who uses that “Show all tags on posts by default” option on the Tweaks extension from xKit.)
Maybe the extra tagss show up in the search function, but so does every other post that has any related word (for example, a search for “musical gift” would include posts about music and anyone saying that another person is a gift, or that they got a gift from someone else).

Life pro-tip - If you get a link from MEGA, you can very easily add it to your own account by clicking ‘Import to my cloud drive’ on a computer or ‘Import’ on the mobile app. If the link owner deletes the link, your copy of the files will still work. (If the files are deleted by MEGA, on the other hand, yours will be deleted, as well.) Google Drive also allows users to ’Make a copy’ of files to their own account, so links don’t have to constantly be re-used; this is also a work-around for those pesky ‘Daily download quota’ errors when trying to get something that another person has shared on Drive. These two methods can save you a lot of time, especially if, like whoever submitted this, your Internet is slow. (It also helps if you don’t want to download everything all at once.)
At what point would you consider someone to be an established trader: the amount of time someone has been trading, or the amount of items you own?
I personally judge by how long they’ve been actively trading; from maybe six months to a year, you’re pretty experience, and at around a year, you’re established. The time frames or definition of “established” is different for everyone, though.
What are some active trading forums? I only know musicalexchange :(
I know there’s the Yahoo! group, and the subreddits /r/BroadwayBroadcasts (it’s mostly for gifting, and the mod is very picky about who gets in, only accepting traders with good-sized lists and “rarer or hard-to-find” items, but trading is allowed) and /r/TheShoeDrops (not sure how active this is anymore).
I’m not sure where else you can find people, although Tumblr’s pretty active, as well. (And not just for finding people who trade through Tumblr.)

I know most traders won’t even consider doing this anymore, but I would really like to back-up and watch my videos using a DVD. I already have all the files necessary for this process (vob + smalls), so is there any software that you could recommend to get the job done?
Unfortunately, I don’t know of any software. I had used one a few years ago when I had to burn DVDs in order to save the stuff I didn’t have uploaded and I had to get a new computer, but I can’t remember the name of it.
Maybe somebody can help out and recommend something?
I got sent an audio by a friend of mine, and there's a note in it that it's supposed to be marked as someone's master. Why?
There are different reasons why a master wants their audio marked as theirs, and it all depends on the master themselves. Maybe they want more people to see what they have, and putting their name with the audio helps them get their name out there to traders. Or maybe they want the audio marked as “NFT – Contact master directly,” and if their name isn’t there, then nobody can contact them. It’s also a possibility that there are multiple copies of that same performance; adding a master’s name helps people differentiate between copies. (Sometimes one master’s audio is clearer than another’s, or the one master tracks their audios while another master doesn’t.)
(Whether it’s regarding audios or videos, please do what the master asks. They didn’t have to record or release anything, but they did. Following their rules encourages them to record/release more stuff.)
I would really like to trade with people who turned me down but something is stopping me. What if they turned me down again and there’s no one similar to trade with? Well, I do know that we love in a world where dreams, ambitions and aspirations don’t always come true. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you need it. But then again, if you gave up on something you want then maybe you don’t want it as much as you thought you did. What would you do if you were me: let go or try harder?
Hey, Anon. I’m not sure if you wanted this published as a confession or actually answered, but I’m going to go with the latter.
Most traders will explain why they turn down a trade - sometimes it’s because they can’t find anything of interest, sometimes they’re too busy to trade at the moment, or they lost their link for whatever you asked for, etc. If they just never responded, then it could mean a lack of interest in the trade, but it could also mean they just never got it.
Whether or not you should try again strongly depends on how they turned you down. If they were nice about it, then you definitely should try again, especially if you’ve gotten a lot more to offer since you last contacted them. However, if they were rude when turning you down, then I strongly suggest hoping someone else has whatever you’re interested in - rude traders are almost always not worth the hassle.
If you decide to not email them again, then you should ask other traders if they know anyone else with whatever you’re looking for. (Every once in a while, there’s someone who will trade with you, then go to the other person and ask for whatever you were trying to get from them in the first place. It doesn’t always happen, though.)
This is more of a question than a confession. I saw MEGA is only allowing 50GB of space for the first 30 days after registration, and then after that only 15GB if you don't complete other bonuses (which still offer temporary storage). Does that mean after the thirty days all the links I saved to my new MEGA account could be deleted if I used over 15GB? I'm so confused and kind of worried.
Unfortunately, that is how MEGA runs now. Fortunately, your files won’t be deleted after you go from the initial 50GB to the new 15GB - you just can’t add anything else to the account.
Hi, I would like to ask a question: would you recommend a trading partner?
[Hi! This also ended up being MUCH longer than I originally planned, so I apologize in advance! I hope this will help answer your question a bit.]
I don’t have a lot of experience when it comes to trading partners, so I don’t really have much of an opinion. It’s really all up to how you feel about having a trading partner. And to be honest, I can’t imagine sharing a site with someone because I’m very set in how I like my site to look; when it comes to sharing my collection of links, I’m just paranoid that anyone I share the documents with will take them and leave me in the dust.
They can be a great help if you’re new to trading and not really sure about it all, or if you just want to make sure you’ll (almost) always have links. I’ve also seen people whose trading partners are there to help get things that the other person can’t - they don’t really share a list, just links here and there. (Sometimes releasing masters for each other, vouching for them if someone else is unsure about something, things like that.)
At the same time, it takes a lot of trust in someone that they won’t take your collection of links and run, or that they won’t ruin your reputation. (I know someone who had a trading partner and the two of them shared a site, but the partner ended up never replying to trades and basically scammed everyone they traded with - and I think even changed passwords so that the other person couldn’t access their shared email account or their shared site.)
As I said above, I don’t have much of an opinion - trading partners can be great, but they can also absolutely suck. If you feel like a partner would be helpful for you, then by all means, go and search for one, ask around for any possible takers! But just be careful and make sure that you feel sure you won’t be scammed. (Even if that means backing up your links or list.)

A little understanding goes a long way.

Not for trade dates apply to EVERYONE, not just traders. The reason they exist is so that the people recording these bootlegs do not get arrested for trying to provide bootlegs for us.
Do any of you know how many people actually record shows in New York and their out of town tryouts and then release them as bootlegs? Five. Of these five, only two actually release these shows on a regular basis. Literally the same 2 - 5 people are the ones providing bootlegs for the ENTIRE theatre community. From this Broadway season alone, the same person has recorded and released: DEH, Amelie, The Bandstand, Sara Bareilles in Waitress, CFA, and Groundhog Day. This doesn’t even include a fraction of what they’ve recorded and released over the years, or the videos they have yet to release.
My point is, these five people are literally risking their necks and lawsuits recording these shows and are the literal backbone of the trading and bootleg community. In return, they only ask one thing: that these shows never be posted publicly on Youtube, Tumblr, or Stagedork and what you do all do anyway??
Do any of you posting bootlegs “free for all” before the NFT has passed know what happened with the DEH boot? It was up on Stagedork less than two weeks after being released by the master. The NFT was violated and several masters said they would stop recording shows if people kept violating these dates. The reason The Bandstand is NFT until September is thanks to whichever group of people bought the DEH off the master and then uploaded it to Stagedork. And now, once again, Groundhog Day was uploaded to Youtube and Stagedork before the NFT date has passed!
Literally, sharing is nice but respect the masters. Respect their NFT dates. Have some damn patience or go and record your own bootlegs. Because you know whats going to potentially happen now?? Masters will stop recording these shows and then nobody will be able to see them except for those who can make the trip to NYC or wherever else.
Do not ruin this for everybody just because you want more followers/the prestige of having posted the video first.
