From the beginning, I always knew that Norman is perfectly capable of being ruthless ever since he knows about the truth about GF.
He just holds back A LOT, because 1) he didn’t have enough information, and 2) he’s in tight spot where he can’t move recklessly. One mis-step, and they’re over.
From the start, he’s willing to do ANYTHING to get them out of there. It’s just from this scene, he wants to restrain Sister Krone and Mom because he didn’t know what would happen if they died. Meaning, the lack of information had prevented him from acting quickly.
It’s the same when he escaped from Lambda. He prevent himself from acting recklessly because he knows they won’t let him escape easily. It took him one and a half years to break from Lambda.
The first thing he did after releasing all cattle children from Lambda is this:
He gathers MORE information about demons.
In order for them to be free forever, he needs information first. Every information have to be gathered, analyzed, and only from that, he can decide the best course of action to move.
He has all the informations needed. There’s nothing to hold him to do as he wants.
Still though, the third thing that held him back and the most important factor is Emma.
He loves her too much, and her opinion held a great deal for him. It’s because of Emma’s wish that he was able to hold back when he confronted Ray.
But when the situation changed and he’s in no position to back down, he won’t bend to anyone, including Emma.
And right now, it’s the same.
He is in no position to back down. Everyone are relying on him. All plans has started to set. Plus, the time he has spent in the past almost two years without Emma has make him being free with himself and his decision. So with that, Emma’s wish won’t budge him at all (even if it still make his heart break). That’s why he has no intention to stop.
Emma’s wish to save everyone has become engraved within him, but the time he spent alone has made him getting firmer with his own desicions.
So he’s becoming an anti-hero in this arc.
He’s trying to do good things out of good intentions, but the way he do things is questionable and a little villanious.
My conclusion is, Norman is not your sweet-lovely-boy-who-turns-evil-because-of-reasons cliche.
Norman has ALWAYS been Norman.
It’s just there’s nothing to hold him back now.
