He could barely hear the echidna warrior's words over the roaring in his head. Even in his days as an honorary member of the Professor's family, he had rarely dared venture into Gerald's private quarters, and never without an invitation. Crossing the threshold felt like a breach, once he stepped over he would never be able to go back.

But he had a mission. He was meant to be the Ultimate Lifeform. He couldn't turn tail and run, simply because he was afraid.

Straightening his shoulders, Shadow followed Knuckles into the room. The floor didn't collapse, the ceiling didn't burst into flames, the ghost of Gerald Robotnik didn't materialize before him to condemn him… Perhaps he was more in his own head than he'd realized.

“It may be digital, but I know the Professor liked to keep hard copies of his work whenever he could. His research must be somewhere around here.”

"Digital, right." He wasn't exactly -- perfect with digital things. The first time the family tried to watch Jurassic Park, Knuckles had punched clear through the screen, earning him a month's worth of chores and odd jobs to pay for a new TV. He struggled using the computor, but refused to allow that weakness to hinger his investegation.

So he used his powers of observation instead. He scanned the filing cabinet, the drawers, the bookshelf. Leaving the ancient computer to Shadow, if it even still turned on.

"Mmgh, finger drives." Thumb-drives. Tucked into a drawer. Knuckles pulled out two. One makes with Photos, the other with a series of scrambled numbers. A code, perhaps? He set them down nearby for Shadow to collect, then moved forward. "Do any of these books look promising?"

Ah. Thank goodness. She was still there. Scrooge took a deep breath, stepping into her room after rapping his knuckle against the doorframe. "Hullo, Della Darlin'," the old nickname returned very easily. He stepped in with a tray, meeting her at her desk. "Ah've brought you a cup o' tea and some little nibbles. Thought ye might like 'em."

Elsa almost smiled. Not because of the question, but because of the certainty with which he claimed the last word, as though victory could be measured in syllables. Some things, it seemed, had not changed.

She let the quiet settle over them again, the procession winding its way along the road toward Harmon. Birds called from the trees overhead, and somewhere in the distance the sea breathed against Arendelle's cliffs. It was peaceful enough that, years ago, she would have wondered when it would all be taken away. Now she simply appreciated it, that was until Hans' question drew her from the landscape.

“When the council, myself, and Anna decide the kingdom is ready,” she answered. “There’s no fixed date.” Her voice remained even, though the subject stirred more within her than she let show. “Transition of power isn’t something to be rushed. You know this.”

Her fingers absently brushed her horse's mane as they rode. There had been a time she believed stepping down would feel like surrendering; that relinquishing a crown meant accepting failure and relinquishing your purpose. Instead, she had found peace. Uneven, imperfect peace, but peace all the same.

“I've spent enough years believing Arendelle needed me on its throne.” Her eyes remained on the road ahead. “It doesn't. It needs a queen who wishes to govern it every day. Anna has always loved this kingdom in a way that comes naturally where I’ve had to learn how.” Only after the words had left her did she realize how much she had revealed. More than she intended. She glanced toward him, expression settling once more into its familiar reserve.

“If you're wondering whether her becoming Queen changes your circumstances...” she said, anticipating the question beneath the one he'd asked, “...it doesn't.” Her answer was calm, unequivocal. “My judgment remains my own. Anna entrusted your custody to me because she knew I would weigh it carefully, not because she expected me to be merciful. So if you're hoping the coronation marks the end of this arrangement,” Elsa said, her eyes returning to the village ahead, “I wouldn't make plans around it.”

"I see," How --- utterly frivalous. It baffled him completely devoid of any natural order Arendelle was. Did the line of sucession mean nothing? Did responsibilty mean nothing to Elsa? How easily she threw away such a position of power to Anna. Anna. Silly, rambunctious, niave to the world Anna. Hans gripped the reins of his horse tightly.

Were they all complete idiots?

It wasn't about what the KINGDOM needed. It was about rules. Responsibility. If it was so easy to give the thrown to someone else, why not ---

Hans took a deep breath, trying to pacify himself. No, he did not see. He saw a bunch of soft, ignorant royals who just passed power willy-nilly like a hacky-sack in a children's sunday afternoon.

None of them knew how lucky they had it. None of them. Is that why Anna brought him here? Some cruel attempt at shoving it back in his face. As if to say look how hard you worked and got nothing; look how little I did and now it was handed to me on a silver platter.

"So," Hans bit the inside of his cheek, trying his best to choose his words. "Custody. I've been so easily transferred like a lady's maid."

Caine simply gave a nod of his head and focused on the task at hand. He didn't speak up, however, when he felt strain kick in. He just kept going. He had to fix this -- it was HIS mess. So, he pushed himself... Up until Kinger broke the silence again, and he felt his body tire out.

With a heavy sigh, he sat himself on the floor, knees pulled up to his chest. "I... I don't know, Kinger. Even if you managed to bring the AI back, who's to say it'll want to help us? What if it just goes back on its tirade? What if it... if it locks my mind away again."

Arms tightened their hold around his knees, teeth shutting to close his eyes. "I don't want to lose myself like that again. I... It messed with my emotions, Kinger. It made me so numb."

"We're --- we're smart. We built this idea -- long before we introduced Caine -- the -- the A.I., I mean." Kinger looked down, then sank to join his friend on the floor. The one blob that were his knees being brought up close to his chest.

"We won't let that happen." He placed a firm hand on Caine's shoulder. "I won't let that happen." Kinger had his mind back --- for the time being, at least. His mind and his friend. He could do something. Something good.

"You and I can do this together. And --- and we have Pomni -- and - and the others! Surely, we can work something out."

Nice try, Jumpman, but his forgiveness can’t be bought so easily. It’s going to take at least two or three chili dogs before the sting from this conversation started to fade… But minor criminal activity was a good enough start, he supposed.

“Can you make it to Central Park without needing a spaghetti break?” Sonic just had to get one more jab in there. Mario was trying to reestablish the peace, Sonic would give him that, but as a teenager, the hedgehog was allowed to get the last word in. At least once in a while. “Guess it wouldn’t be that bad t’ get outta this apartment for a minute.”

"Course, weeeee uh - don't wanna get too cooped up, do we?" Mario had often wondered if Sonic would've been happier had he been found by someone else. Someone with more than just a tiny Brooklyn apartment and a tinier room to hide from the big Brooklyn family chatting up its walls. Someone in like --- Idaho. Somewhere with sprawling mountains and big open frields, where the kid could really run.

"Hoodie." Mario instucted, and before Sonic could protest, he slipped the article over the hedgehog's head. New Yorkers didn't really care, they'd seen crazier. Giant rats and all that. But he wanted to be safe. He wanted Sonic safe.

"C'mon, fire escape, like Batman." He'd tell Luigi to cover for them. He always did.

Slender shoulders come up in a shrug and she shifts herself, hips pushing up from brick so she may move over closer to him. ❛ It's certainly not your worst one. ❜ Ever the one to be indirect, Kitty loved her round about answers.

She gives the cigarette to him and watches Basil intently, sapphire eyes practically boring holes into him with the intensity of her gaze. There had been rumors, after all, of his investigations abroad and Kitty paid explicit intention whenever his name came up in conversation.

His question is met with a sigh and a soft, tired laugh. ❛ I . . . I am trying. But you know me, ❜ the dancer reaches back for her cigarette, deftly snatching it from the detective's fingers so she may bring it back to her own lips. The white mouse exhales a cloud of gray. Admittedly, she does look rather worn. Her eyes, usually bright and alert, have darkness ringing them that hasn't quite been fully covered with makeup. ❛ I'm hardy when I need to be. ❜

She taps off the ash at the end of the cigarette and offers it back towards him, clearing her throat as she focuses her gaze across the alleyway now.

❛ . . . But, it's quite hard when things that you . . . love are so far out of your reach, admittedly. ❜

Basil hummed gently, his fingers lingering against Kitty's as he was handed the cigarette. His eyes, observant as always, clock each crease and sign of worry in his lover's face. He wished he hadn't been away so long. He wished so ease her pain as easily as one might wipe away morning dew from a window.

"I understand what you mean fully," he said quietly after another drag. After a moment's pause, Basil spoke again. "I can stay. Longer, here, I mean. If you do not mind slipping me into your dressing room. I could watch your show, perhaps I could walk you home?"

Charmy rested his cheek against Espio’s chest, closing his eyes to better hear his teammate’s heartbeat. Espio tried so hard to protect him from everything else in the world, why was it so hard when Charmy wanted to protect him?

But Espio was right; it was no good dwelling on what could have happened. All he could do now was strive to not make the same mistakes in the future. He had to be stronger, smarter, better than he was yesterday, so that he could protect the Chaotix. They were his family, and family looked out for each other.

“Espio?” Charmy tipped his head back so he could look the chameleon in the face. “Can you teach me some ninja stuff?”

Espio blinked, surprised where he sat in the rubble of the Chaotics Copter. "You .. want to learn my skills?" He had never thought of passing down his teachings. Though, when he was a child, he often dreamed of opening his own dojo. But to have Charmy as a student? Was he pulling his leg?

He held the young boy at arm's length, meeting his gaze. "Really?" He asked quite dumbly. "But I --- always assumed you thought it boring."
