Study finds digital stethoscope AI outperforms GPs at detecting heart valve disease

Artificial intelligence could help doctors detect life-threatening heart valve disease years earlier, according to a University of Cambridge–led study.

Researchers analyzed heart sound recordings from nearly 1,800 patients using an AI algorithm trained directly on echocardiogram results, enabling it to identify subtle acoustic patterns beyond traditional murmurs.

The system detected 98% of severe aortic stenosis cases and 94% of severe mitral regurgitation cases, outperforming GPs in head-to-head tests.

Because echocardiography is costly and slow to access, the digital stethoscope–based tool could serve as a fast, low-cost screening method in primary care, helping rule out healthy patients, prioritize referrals, and catch this often silent but deadly condition before irreversible damage occurs.

The findings were published in npj Cardiovascular Health.

Heartbeat ASMR with an electronic stethoscope

I bought that same HM-9260 electronic stethoscope model (in black) but, to my frustration, didn’t manage yet to use its Bluetooth sound input in other applications than the rather user-unfriendly phone/tablet app from the e-steth manufacturer. Which thus gives the same restrictions with respect to audio/video recording and sharing as the EKO Core attachment….. Any support on how to connect the Bluetooth sound output of this steth to audio/video recording applications on iPhone/iPad (or PC) is more than welcome!
