27.1.18// Tough days. I´ve been working tirelessly on my Essay for the seminar “Time concepts in literature” and I keep swinging between depths of despair and inspired creative moments. I ended the first chapter, wrote 5 pages in three days and I still need to discuss some points. And I´ve time till Tuesday.

31.1.18 // that was me when I finished writing the Exposè for my presentation. The night before I worked at it till 3.30 in the morning and I just sent everything the day after. That was a crazy move but in the end, I did well for my presentation and we had a good discussion during the seminar. But I promise I will never get to that point of desperation again.

10.4.17// Slowly getting back on track. I found a giant old book about Weimarer Republik and I’m studying some good old history books before approaching Marieluise Fleißer´s Prose. This time I need a historical approach (less literary theory and more German history/culture/literature) and I need some background before I start writing. I´m taking two more weeks and then I want to start working on my next paper.

16.4.17// Doing my readings on Neu Sachlichkeit and die Neue Frau. I chose a cozy sofa in the reading hall of the Grimm Zentrum instead of a desk. I like working just with pen and paper and not having to tip on the computer all the time so I’ll enjoy the comfort of these pre-writing sessions.

What do you do when you're feeling unmotivated to study languages?

First I usually try to motivate myself in some small way, like watching a show or listening to a song in a target language. If that doesn’t work, I daydream about what will happen if I study. I’ve found this to be a really good strategy recently. I mostly try to imagine when I’m finally living in Germany, working in the language field, traveling around the world and the looks on peoples faces when they realize I’m not a native speaker.
