Happy New Year
âHappy new year.â She whispered as she looked down at her glass of wine in hand.
She sighed. Bringing in new year alone.
Well this was a first, at least he was at work. Surrounded by people. At least he wasnât on his own.
She looked up as a bang from outside the flat startled her thoughts and she opened the window to watch the fireworks.
She smiled as the colours illuminated against the jet black sky.
She loved fireworks, always had since sheâd been young.
Surprising really, seeing as she didnât usually like the dark, nor overly loud noises.
She could faintly hear people talking, singing and generally enjoying themselves.
She wasnât that far from the hospital, or the pub. Probably why the fireworks were so clear. She picked up Her phone that was sat on the windowsill and typed out a simple text.
âHappy New Year. Wishing you love for 2019. Dxâ
she sighed as she hovered over the send button. Before deleting the latter of the text, she simply sent.
âHappy New Year. Dxâ
Charlie had escaped from the crowd and into his office.
The door closed. He took in the calm before the storm.
He looked at the picture on his desk, the picture of him and his wife.
He wasnât going to lie. He missed her.
The house felt empty since sheâd moved out.
A choice heâd made when he told her he couldnât fight anymore.
A choice and sentence of words he deeply regretted.
Hearing his phone, he removed it from the pocket of his tunic and smiled sadly, at the screen saver.
It was still a picture of her. He couldnât bare to change it. Because then it would feel final.
1 Text from Duffy Fairhead.
He clicked on the announcement and read the message.
Sighing heavily as he looked back at the photo.
âHappy New Year Sweetheart xâ
he sent the message in reply before he decided to call her.
Something that took Duffy by surprise when his name flashed up on her phone and it started to ring.
Within 2 rings. Sheâd answered.
âCharlie? Is everything ok?â She asked. Worried at why he could be ringing her.
He smiled at the sound of her voice.
If it was really all over; why did she still make him feel this way, just by the sound of her voice?
âEverythingâs Fine I... I just wanted to make sure you were ok.â
He admitted and she smiled sadly at that.
âIâm ok. Watching the fireworks from the window. I.... I thought maybe you was ringing to ask if I could work.â
She laughed sadly and he chuckled in reply. âNo, no. I wouldnât do that.â
He sighed and silence feel between them. âThatâs probably wise anyway, Iâve... Ive had a drink.â
She added, he nodded in reply and again, silence fell.
âI....â
âcould we get w coffee tomorrow?â He asked. Cutting her off mid sentence.
She smiled to herself. âIâd like that.â She whispered.
âMe too. Can I.. text you tomorrow afternoon? After Iâve caught some sleep.â
Again; she nodded to herself. âOf course. I... I donât have any plans. Although, being New Yearâs Day. Will anything be open?â
He sighed. He hadnât through about that. âBugger.â He muttered, a faint giggle escaping her lips and traveling down the phone.
A sound that never failed to make him smile. âWhy donât you come to the house? Come home? We can talk?â
She smiled. âIâd like that. If... if youâre sure.â âOf course. Iâll text tomorrow?â
âSounds good. I... Iâll see you then? Night Charlie. Happy New year.â
âHappy new year sweetheart.â
She smiled sadly and was just about to end the call when she heard him add.
âDuffy?â
âYes?â
âI love you.â He replied quietly.
She smiled. Wiping a tear from her cheek.
âI love you too.â She replied, smiling sadly as the phone call ended.
He placed his phone back in his tunic pocket, and glanced back at the phone.
He meant it, he loved her.
Was he really prepared to give up on her, following one mistake?
He sighed heavily and stood up, time to face the music, he opened the office door and sighed again, as he saw the waiting room full of patients.
Approaching Noel he picked up a file and called the name of the patient.
âTom Williams. This way please....â
back to reality to a happy new year.
Only Human - Duffy Fic
Duffy stared at the mirror, the cracks in the glass, mirroring how she felt inside.â©Broken.
â©Wouldn't it be easy to throw it all away?âšWouldn't it be easy to call it a day?
â©Bad luck they say, breaking a mirror, but that was just her full stop, wasnât it? She was bad luck.â©2 failed marriages and now her third heading for heartbreak, was it her, was she unlovable?â©Is that why she felt the need to hurt anyone that got too close, anyone that loved her?
â©How do you love when you're broken?âšI've had enough, I'm only human
â©She couldnât explain why, Sheâd done what she had.â©Self distraction maybe? or maybe it was because she didnât care, she had no strength left to fight.â©Not for herself, apparently not for her marriage either.â©Itâs why sheâd thrown herself under the bus. Cheated on her loyal, Wonderful husband.â©The man who would easily give his life for her, to protect her. Love her. Sheâd waited 30 years to be his wife.â©So why wasnât she happy?â©It wasnât him, that made her unhappy, god, he made her the happiest anyone ever had.
â©No. It was the demons inside, the voices that said she was worthless, not good enough for someone like Charlie, someone so perfect, she was a disappointment compared to him, and broken, a shell.â©Not worthy of something so special.â©Not worthy of love.â©Why was she feeling so.... lost?
â©She had the perfect life on paper, children, a granddaughter, a loving, caring, amazing husband.â©Yet.... sheâd ended up in bed with the first man that had paid her any kindness.â©Any attention, The first person who had made her feel wanted in the wake of her loneliness.
â©I can't control what is out of my handsâšGod knows sometimes I just don't understand.
â©She picked up a piece of broken glass from the mirror.â©Her eyes gazing over the sharp edges. She closed her eyes as she wrapped her hand tightly around the shard.â©The blood slowly dripping onto the dressing table.â©She couldnât feel any pain. She was numb. Numb to all feelings and emotions.â©Numb to the damage she was causing to herself and those around her.
â©But I want to know why today got so much colderâšAnd I want to know when the storm clouds will be over
â©She wanted nothing more than to be in the comfort of her husbands arms, smell the comforting natural scent of his skin.â©Feel The stubble on his cheeks, first thing in the morning when he woke her with a kiss.
â©The safeness and contentment his presence brought to her.â©But sheâd pushed him away with All the lies, deceit and hurt.
â©I want to love when I'm brokenâšI want to love I'm only human
â©She didnât deserve that, tenderness, not anymore, sheâd destroyed everything they had.â©Sheâd lost his trust, sheâd lost her own self worth.â©She didnât deserve his love.
â©When I see the sun I am starting againâšNo matter the luck, it's never the end
â©But without him, Without him, she had nothing left to fight for.â©
Lonely, This Christmas. Part 3.
Picking at the ribbon on the top of the box, he smiled, she always made gifts look so beautiful.
He removed the lid and began to open the presents inside.
Sighing sadly. He picked up the watch box and unwrapped it.
He stopped when he realised what it was, sheâd remembered. He smiled sadly, removing the watch from the box.
He turned it over to look at it, in more detail and noticed the message.
A lump formed in this throat, his thumb brushing over the gold.
She knew, exactly how to get it right. Every present came from the heart.
Being a typical male, heâd left everything to last minute and after events, hadnât actually got her anything.
Other than a small gold knotted bracelet heâd seen in a jewellers a few weeks pervious.
How had it come to this... he never thought sheâd cheat on him, not Duffy, his Duffy.
Itâs why it had been such a shock, a blow.
He thought sheâd loved him, almost as much as he loved her. His world, the sparkle in his eye. The one thing, that usually made everything perfect, had made everything unbearable.
Rising from the table. He placed the items back in the box and headed for the door. A walk might do him good, clear his mind, before he cried anymore tears.
Finding himself stood outside the hotel, his wife has said she was staying in.
He reached into his pocket as he heard his phone.
A text, from her. âI hope you liked the presents. I know youâre impatient so will have already opened them. Merry Christmas darling. I love you and Iâm sorry! Dxxâ he smiled sadly.
Reading the message he then looked at the background photo on his phone. The 2 of them on their wedding day.
Heading into the hotel, he found her room number and knocked on the door.
Frowning, Duffy rose from the bed. Wondering who it would be. Charlie, being the last person she expected to see on her doorstep.
âCharlie....?â She smiled faintly. âEverything ok?â
He nodded. âCan I Come in?â She stepped aside and let him into the room, closing her door behind Him.
âDo you want a drink?â
âPlease.â
She moved to the bottle of wine that was already open on the beside table and poured him a glass, as well as topping up her own.
Charlie sat himself on the sofa. Watching her. Heâd waited 30 years to be with her, was he really prepared to throw that all away?
She moved closer and handed him the glass.
âSit down, please?â He asked.
Gesturing to the space beside him on the sofa.
She sat herself down. Her legs curled up beneath her.
âWhy are you here Charlie?â She asked and he shrugged.
âWanted to see you I guess. I went for a walk. Found myself here.â
She nodded. âDid you like the present?â
He smiled, placing his hand in her leg. âI loved the present. I love you, too....â she turned her head towards him.
âShouldnât that be loved?â She asked sadly and he shook his head.
âNo, I love you. I.... I shouldnât have given up on you. On us. But you need to be honest with me...l need to know what happened.â
She swallowed. Nodding gently. If it meant saving their ,area he sheâd tell him anything he wanted to know.
âHe.. he said youâd been having an affair? That you said, you were in a loveless marriage and wanted to feel wanted again....â
she quickly shook her head.
âHe said what? No. No thatâs not true. None of it. It was a stupid drunken one night stand. I was upset because weâd argued but I never said that. I would never say that. God, you are the only man Iâve been with thatâs made me feel, like me.â
âHe said it had been going on for a while. That you, were going to him for comfort. That you had history and had rekindled your old feelings.â
She continued to shake her head. No wonder heâd thrown her out.
âI swear to you. On my life Charlie. None of that is true. Yes, we had a thing back when we were teenagers. When I was 15. But it was nothing, like he said. God he makes my skin crawl. Had I not been so intoxicated, I wouldnât have gone near him with a barge poll.â She stated firmly.
âWeâd has that argument, I was tired, almost made a mistake...â he nodded.
âI needed someone to talk to. He was there. The only person I could speak to, that didnât know anything. That I could lie to and who wouldnât know I was lying. So I had a drink. A few drinks. I.... Iâd taken a couple of tablets for a headache. The wine must have mixed with it, because all I remember, is waking up in that hotel. With....â she swallowed, saying it made her feel sick. âHim.â
He placed his hand on her knee again. âDid he hurt you?â
She shook her head. âNo...â she sighed and He nodded, that was a relief.
He took hold of her hand. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
She sighed sadly. âBecause I knew youâd hate me.â
âI could never hate you. Youâre my wife. The love of my entire life. I love you too much to hate you.â She turned her head to face him.
âDo you really mean that?â She met his gaze and he moved his hand to her cheek. âYes. I mean it. Every word. Iâm sorry, for what I said. I lashed out, I....â she shook her head. âItâs ok, you had every right to react the way you did. You had every right to walk away.â
She smiled sadly, and a few moments of silence fell.
âCome home?â He asked. âWe can fix this, you and I.. we are stronger together. I wonât let him, ruin the best thing in my life.â
She lent foward and rested her forehead against his.
âWhat ever you want me to do... Iâll do. I love you Charlie Fairhead.â
He kissed her softly. âI love you too Mrs Fairhead. So very much.â
She stroked his cheek. Their eyes meeting. Nothing else needed to be said.
âCome on. Letâs get you home. Where you belong.â
He stood up from the sofa and held his hand out to her.
Catching sight of the clock, he smiled. 3 minutes past midnight.
âMerry Christmas darling.â
She placed her hand into his and stood up.
âMerry Christmas.â
Sealing the conversation with a kiss, he took her home.
To where she belonged, back in his arms, safe and away from harm.
The only Christmas present, heâd ever wanted.

The moment we can haveâ©You catch me in your eyesâ©That beauty on my pillowâ©That holds me in the night
â©Duffy woke as the light began to filter its way through the curtians, she sighed as she rolled over and smiled when she saw Charlie lying beside her.
â©âMorning!â She whispered as he gazed down at her âgood morning!â He grinned leaning down to place a kiss into her lips.
â©âlast night wasâŠâ
â©âAwfulâ she joked, giggling as he began to frown âlast night was worth the 3 decade wait!â She responded more seriously as she moved herself closer to rest her head against his chest.Â
â©So I keep feeling closeâ©To us beyond compare
â©They lay for a while enjoying each otherâs close company before Duffy broke the silence.
â©âIs that from when you were shot?!â She asked gently running her fingertips lightly over the scar he had on his chest âindeed!â he replied as she tilted her head up to face him.
â©And I will find my strength to untame my mouthâ©When I used to be afraid of the wordsâ©But with you I've learned just to let it outâ©Now my heart is ready to burst
â©âdoes it hurt?â She asked as he shook his head âit did but not anymoreâ he replied with a smile as she placed a delicate kiss onto the scar before leaning up and placing another long kiss onto his lips.Â
â©"We need to get ready for work!â She sighed pulling away a few minutes later.â©âcan I take you out tonight? Dinner somewhere nice?â He asked as she smiled shyly âIâd like thatâ she admitted as he kissed her one final time.Â
â©"It's a date."
â©She smiled. "I'm all yours."
â©And I know every day you say itâ©But I just want you to be sureâ©That I'm yoursâ©That I'm yoursâ©

I wear your winter coatâ©The one you love to wear
â©"Charlie?" They stopped a few yards ahead as she moved herself to stand infront of him and looked down towards the ground.Â
â©"you know something, whenever I am or was upset, or when I missing home. Or whenever something bad happened, It wasn't the thought of Ryan that made me feel better. It was you!" She admitted as she dove into her bag.
â©"it wasn't Ryan that I wanted" she added as she pulled out a photo. "I've carried this with me for almost 30 years!"Â
â©And I will find my strength to untame my mouthâ©When I used to be afraid of the wordsâ©But with you I've learned just to let it outâ©Now my heart is ready to burst
â©Charlie could hear the emotion in her voice as she handed him the picture, he looked down and smiled as the memories of the day rushed back as if they were from yesterday.Â
â©"I remember, when this was taken, we'd just worked an 18 hour shift, we should have headed home for some sleep, but instead headed for breakfast in some greasy spoon around the corner"
â©He reminded as a small smile formed on Duffy's face at the memory.Â
â©"you know why I remember it so well?" He asked as she looked up at him and shook her head.
â©"I remember it because, I dropped you home and came this close to kissing you!"
â©He admitted holding his fingers a few centimetres apart "but you were married, and I didn't want to be that bloke!" He added with a sigh as she looked back down. â©"and now?" She asked "What if you had the chance now?" She added bravely as he met her gaze with his own, his eyes full of surprise.
â©He placed his hand on her cheek, stroking his thumb along her cheekbone as he looked deep into her eyes.Â
â©'Cause I, I feel like I'm ready for loveâ©And I wanna be your everything and moreâ©And I know every day you say itâ©But I just want you to be sureâ©That I'm yours
â©"kiss me!" She begged just above a whisper, Charlie didn't need telling twice as he slowly moved forward until there lips were touching, kissing her gently before pulling back and hovering just millimetres apart.
â©Duffy reclosed the small gap between then, her eyes falling shut as there lips remet for a long and meaningful kiss, 30 years of bottled up emotions rolling into that one moment.Â
â©As he pulled away, Charlie rested his forehead against hers as she let a small sigh escape her lips.Â
â©"shall I be honest with you now?" Charlie stated as Duffy pulled back to look at him and nodded.
â©"I've been dreaming of this moment for 30 years. And do you know why?" He questioned as she shook her head " because I've been in love with you from the very first day I met you."
â©He informed her as a small tear rolled down her cheek.Â
â©And if I've been feeling heavyâ©You take me from the darkâ©Your arms they keep me steadyâ©So nothing could fall apart
â©"I don't want to spend anymore years apart!" He informed her, wiping the tear away from her cheek as she lent forward to kiss him again.
â©"neither do I!" She whispered as a smile formed on both of there faces.Â
â©He pulled her into a hug, holding her against him chest and placing a kiss into the top of her head.
â©"So what happens now?" Charlie asked gently a few minutes later as Duffy moved her head from his shoulder to look at him.Â
â©"now, now you take me home!" She informed him, a knowing and encouraging look in her eye as she rummaged around in her bag for her keys.

It had been a long and emotional shift, As Duffy entered the staff room she closed the door behind her and got the fright of her life when she turned to see Charlie sat on the sofa, he sat up when he heard the door open and smiled as he saw her.Â
â©"what are you playing at? You scared the life out of meâ she gasped in a hushed shout.Â
â©"sorry I didn't mean to make you jumpâ Charlie laughed as he stood up.
â©Duffy shook her head with a smile âif anyone has ever told you that your in my will Mr Fairhead then they have been very much misinformedâ She joked, Charlie laughed.
â©"what are you still doing here anyway. Didn't your shift finish an hour ago?" She asked, moving over to the lockers to retrieve her bag.
â©"I was waiting for you to finish: thought we could maybe go for dinner or a drink?! You look like you could do with cheering up."Â Â
â©Now my heart is ready to burstâ©'Cause I, I feel like I'm ready for loveâ©And I wanna be your everything and more
â©She paused before turning to face him "or maybe we could get a take away and a bottle of wine and go back to the house?!" She responded catching him off guard.
â©"it's been a long day. I just want to go home" she admitted.Â
â©"we could do this some over night?!" He offered as she shook her head "no, a night in your company sounds like just the tonic I need after today!" She admitted shyly as he smiled.
â©"right then Ms Duffin!" He held his arm out to her as she slipped hers through it "what's it to be? Chinese?! Itailian?!" Â
â©Duffy laughed as they headed out of the building "actually, you know what I fancy?!" She whispered into the cold night air as they began to walk along the dark and quite road that lead back to her apartment.
â©Charlie looked down at her with a smile "a bag of chips and a stroll along the river!"Â
â©"I thought you wanted to go home?!" He asked as she shrugged "maybe i've changed my mind, maybe I'd rather spend some time with you!" She responded honestly. Â
â©Charlie couldn't help but smile as she tentatively placed her hand into his and pulled him gently in the direction of the river. They wandered for a while chit-chatting about the day before falling into a comfortable silence. Â
â©And I know every day you say itâ©But I just want you to be sureâ©That I'm yours
â©Charlie glanced down to see Duffy shiver "your cold?"
â©It was more of a statement than a question but Duffy shook her head.
â©"I'm fine!" She smiled up at him as he raised his eyebrow.Â
â©"here" he removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders.
â©"forever a gentleman" she replied gratefully wrapping it around herself as she moved closer to him, smiling as he placed his arm around her and held her against his side. ⩠ â©
Lonely, This Christmas. Part 2.
Closing the door with a sigh. Charlie placed his keys on the side, it had been a long day, and he was tried.
He hated coming home to an empty house. It wasnât the same without her.
Turning he stopped as he noticed Duffy stood in the kitchen doorway.
âHi...â She smiled sadly
âI.... I just came to pick up a couple of bits. I.... Iâm sorry, Iâll be going.â She picked up her bag and headed for the door.
Not wanting to upset him. Or make it anymore awkward between them. Than it already was. She stopped as she felt his hand against her arm. Looking down. She smiled sadly.
âIâm sorry. I... I shouldnât have just let myself in. I... I didnât think youâd be home so soon.â She looked up to meet his gaze and she swore she could feel tears instantly fill her eyes.
âitâs fine. I didnât think youâd still be here. Louise said, youâve taken leave.â
He replied sadly as she nodded her head.
âI didnât want things to be awkward for you.â She admitted. âI.... know this is all my fault.â
She swallowed as he too nodded in reply.
âWhere are you staying?â
âHotel, just in town. The Denmark.â He nodded again, âI see.â
He removed his hand from her arm and moved passed towards the kitchen.
He stood in the doorway as he saw the presents.
Silence descending between them.
âI.... I wasnât sure if youâd want or appreciate them but.... I brought them for you so... you might as well have them.â
She broke the quiet as she explained the box on the table.
âThank you....â he turned to where the bottle of whiskey that heâd left the night before had been sat.
Seeing the glass beside it, stained with her lipstick, made him sigh sadly. Something so small, yet meaningful.
âDo you have plans for tomorrow? You, you shouldnât be on your own at Christmas. I.... I donât want you to be on your own.â
âIâm working...â she nodded gently. âI see.â
She sighed as again, silence fell. âYou?â She smiled sadly and shrugged.
âIâll probably go and see Peter. Donât fancy spending all day in the hotel.â
âYou could always come here. I mean, the house will be empty anyway.â
âThank you. I....â she sighed heavily.
âCharlie please, I canât keep doing this. I know I fucked up and you have no idea how sorry I am...â he nodded.
Opening the cupboard, he opened another, new bottle.
âDrink?â He asked. Filling the glass sheâd used earlier. He didnât want another argument, it wouldnât get them anywhere.
âThank you.â She nodded. Stepping into the kitchen.
Her hand brushed against his as she took the glass. âI... Iâm going to go away for a while, in the new year. Give you some space.â She stated. âI.... I donât want to cause you anymore hurt than I already have.â
He simply nodded again. Downing his drink, he poured another.
âWhere are you going to go?â He asked, sipping the strong liquid. She shrugged. âI... I donât know yet. Maybe to see Jake. Heâs in Ireland at the moment.â
âThatâll be nice.â She nodded. Wanting more than anything to ask him to come with her.
âI.... I should goâ She downed the drink and placed the glass down on the side.
âMerry Christmas Charlie.â She smiled sadly. Catching his gaze again, she held it for a few moments before she turned to leave.
âMerry Christmas.â He replied. Sighing, he sat himself down at the table.
Closing his eyes as he heard the front door close shut.
The house once again, empty.
.
Lonely, This Christmas. Part 1.
It was Christmas eve and she was sat on the floor in the hotel room. Staring at the presents infront of her.
The presents sheâd brought for him, for her husband. However now, She didnât know whether to actually give them to him or not. She didnât know if heâd appreciate it, after everything that had happened.
She picked up the shirt, sheâd brought, it had been instinct as she was shopping, she knew it would suit him and so sheâd brought it.
Sighing softly she began to wrap it up. It was going to be such a lonely Christmas.
She was alone, so completely alone, everyone having sided with Charlie when the truth had been revealed regarding her, one night mistake with Bill.
She hated him, the lies heâd told had ruined her marriage. Something she didnât know if she was able to ever rebuild.
She picked up the bottle of aftershave. Inhaling the scent. A tear rolled down her cheek. It was him, his smell. She could always tell when he was near and the scent always made her smile.
She sprayed a small amount against her wrist, another sigh escaping her.
She strayed it again, against her pyjama top, hoping the comforting smell, might help her sleep, trick her tried mind into thinking he was back beside her.
The final gift. A new watch, could she afford it? At the moment, paying for a hotel to sleep in.
Probably not, but heâd seen it when theyâd been on a weekend away, and has said he needed a new one, one just like that.
Sheâd had it engraved on the back.
âTime will never halt our love. Dâ
sheâd brought it months ago, and had it hidden ready for Christmas.
Another thing, she wasnât sure she should give him, due to the circumstances. But it was true. No matter what happened.
No matter how much he pushed her away: she would always love him.
Wrapping all the presents, she placed them into the gift box, along with a nice bottle of whiskey sheâd also picked up.
Sealing it shut with some ribbon. She finished her glass of wine and stood up. A little unsteady on her feet. She laid the box on the bed. Knowing he was at work. She decided to drop it off at the house.
Their house, well his now. Taking the short journey across town to their home. She unlocked the door to let herself in.
The lights having been off. She knew he wasnât home.
She closed the front door behind her and headed for the kitchen.
She placed the wrapped box onto the table. Her finger tips running over the corners.
Turning to leave. She noticed the post addressed to her, in a pile on the side.
An almost empty bottle of whiskey laying next to it. She sighed as she picked it up.
She poured the remainder into a glass. The liquid burning her throat as she swallowed it, in one.
Whiskey reminded her, of him. It was his signature drink.
She smiled sadly. Placing the bottle back on the side, the glass beside it, stained with her lipstick. She scanned her eyes over the kitchen.
A pile of washing up, in the sink. She sighed.
Turning on the taps. Sheâd wash up and then leave.
Placing the tea towel down, a short while later, she turned to leave the kitchen. Just as a key turned in the lock.
She swallowed, unsure of how he would react to finding her in their, his home.
Duffy/Cathy Shipton is actually sooo beautiful for someone who is 59 years old
I am sooooo NOT ok with this! Duffy what have you done?!?!?!?! đłđ±đ»ââïžđđ§đ»đđđđđ
Chuffy Fic ~ My Angel ~ Chapter 2
The bed was so big and empty without her.
Everything around just how sheâd left if on that final day.
He ran his fingertips over the photograph that sat on the dresser, she was beautiful. Everything heâd ever dreamt of.
His whole world, And finally she was his wife, heâd finally managed to make her his wife.
âCharlie?â She whispered, âCharlie?â
He could hear her voice, the beautiful tones of her speaking his name, but he couldnât see her. Why couldnât he see her?
âHoney, Honey? shh, itâs ok!!â She stroked his back, gently coaxing him out of his drunken slumber, she could see he was crying.
Charlie woke suddenly and sat up, his breathing rapid.
âDuffy?â He called loudly.
He turned on the light, startling his wife as he turned to face her.
âCharlie?!â She whispered, the light too bright for her eyes, his own eyes bloodshot from the tears.
âYouâre ok?!â He asked stroked her cheek, his hands running over her figure, tapping her body, making she was really there and not another figment of his imagination.
âYouâre here? youâre ok?!â
She frowned, nodding gently in reply to his random question.
âYes of course Iâm here... darling? Whatâs wrong?!â
His eyes glazed over again.
âYouâre not dead?!â He asked, stroking her cheek once again.
She shook her head and raised an eyebrow at the question.
âWhat? No, of course Iâm not dead!!â She laughed.
âHas someone been getting too over tired and had too much to drink?â She questioned.
âAccident, you, you died. I.. I didnât get to say goodbye!â
He breathed deeply, sweat dripping down his back from the intensity of the dream.
âOh honey!â She smiled sadly.
âYou were just dreaming.â She whispered âIâm ok. Iâm here. 2 arms, 2 legs. A few bruises.â
She laughed âitâs going to take a lot more than your dodgy old car to finish me off!â
He moved his hand to her forehead, a lovely graze and cut, mottled with bruises, temporarily distracting her beauty.
3 days sheâd been unconscious, out of it due to the car accident, 24 hours of touch and go and a week in hospital.
But she was tougher than she looked. It would take a lot to finish her off.
He lent forward and kissed her tenderly, refusing to let her go as he wrapped his arms tightly around her.
âCharlie...â she whispered.
âMy ribsâ She laughed, the broken ribs and the intensity of his hug not making for a great combination.
âIâm never letting you out of my sight again. I canât live without you Duffy!!â He stated, kissing her again as she smiled sadly.
âOh Charlieâ
She gently stroked his brow, placing a kiss against his forehead.
âI promise, Iâm not going anywhere!!â
He laid back down. His arms tightly holding her close, she was safe in his arms.
No one could take her away, he was going to protect her for the rest of his life, wrap her in cotton wool and bubble wrap if he had to.
There was no way on this earth he was losing his wife.
The dream had been to vivid, too heartbreaking to comprehend, but she was ok?! It had all just been an awful dream.
A literal nightmare.
Chuffy Fic ~ My Angel ~ Chapter 1
I originally wrote a version of this for a completely different fandom, and have reedited it, as it works perfectly for Chuffy. I donât know if I have already posted this before. If I have i apologise.
He didn't know what he was going to do without her, never had he thought he would have to carry on without her by his side again, not permanently.
It was the little and simple things heâd miss the most, Her embarrassed smile whenever anyone paid her a compliment, the sound of her laughter when she was happy, the smell of her perfume on the pillow. He missed her so much that he didn't know how to go on.
He stood in front of the mirror staring at his reflection as he attempted to tie his own tie, it was a simple thing that she always used to do for him. It had been 10 days now, 10 days since sheâd done, since she had been ripped away from him.
10 very long days since the heart and soul of his world had been removed and the worse thing was he never even got the chance to say goodbye.
She giggled softly from the doorway as she watched the expression on his face. âDo you need a hand?"
She smiled placing her hands on his shoulders as she turned him around to face her.
âlet me.â She whispered as she began to fix his tie into place, explaining exactly what she was doing as she did it. "see it's really not that hard!"
She winked as she pulled his collar down and straightened out his shirt. âAs handsome as alwaysâ
"What am I going to do without you?" He asked softly as he stroked her cheek. "You'll manage, you already are, besides Iâve not really gone anywhere have I? I'm always going to be with you, in here."
She tapped his chest gesturing to his heart. "and here"
She added as she tapped the side of his head gently as he smiled sadly down at her.
"Plus you have Josh, Connie and the whole of the ED, they are going to take very good care of you. Otherwise Im gonna make their lives a misery" She laughed softly which caused him to laugh too.
âSee that's better isnât it.â She traced her fingertips over his features. He smiled before sighing. âThe car will be here soon honey!" She informed him as he nodded.
"Will you promise me one thing? Well two things?" She added a few seconds later as he nodded again. "For you? Anything.â He replied as she smiled shyly.
"No bloody Lilies, you know I hate the smell of them" She laughed as he rolled his eyes "and the second thing?" He asked lightly as she looked down at the floor.
"That you'll never forget me, That you'll move on but never forget me?" He placed his hand beneath her chin and lifted her head up to meet his gaze before he lent down and kissed her delicate lips tenderly. "Never my darling, never." He promised as she smiled sadly and nodded.
He pulled her closely into his body inhaling the soft scent of her perfume and the smell of her for the final time. "Why did you have to go and leave me? Especially now, Just when I finally got you all to myself..â
He asked once she had pulled away, a tear rolled down his cheek as she shrugged sadly. "It was just my time I guess. Everyone has a time and this is mine!" She wiped the tear from his cheek with her thumb as her own eyes began to fill.
"oh god, Duffy. I miss you so much it hurts.â He stoked her cheek again leaving his hand resting on it as he choked on his words. "I miss you too" she whispered.
"But you'll see me again one day. I'll be waiting for you, with a large vintage single malt, in a nice peaceful park somewhere" she laughed gently. "But not just yet my darling. Theyâre not ready for you here yet. Only special people get to arrive early. Only the special angels get to live here! And You...â She gently poked against his chest. âYouâre just not special enough yet!" She added with a wink.
"But remember sweetheart. This isn't goodbye, just goodnight." She kissed him tenderly, a long kiss full of emotion. She smiled sadly as she withdrew from the kiss a few moments later, and saw the reflection of the clock in the mirror.
"It's time my darlingâ she whispered. "No not yet. Please just 5 more minutes?!" He begged as she gently shook her head, a tear trickling down her cheek.
"I'm sorry sweetheart, it's time for me to go.â She smiled sadly, as her eyes filled with tears. "I love you" she leaned up and placed a final delicate and tender kiss against his lips as she felt herself begin to drift away.
"Not as much as I love you.â He replied as the room suddenly fell cold. That was it she was gone, his beautiful wife had become an angel.
He turned back to the mirror to see his tie was now perfectly in place, he smiled sadly as he ran his hand down it. "The cars here" He heard Josh say lightly from the doorway as he nodded
"She's still here Josh, all around." Josh took a step towards his best friend and placed a comforting hand on his arm.
"and she always will be" He replied glancing over to the photo of Duffy from their wedding day on his bedside table. "Come on, it's time to go and say goodbye"
He whispered heading in the direction of the door. Charlie shook his head. "No, it's not goodbye Josh, itâs just time to say goodnight.â
He turned back to glance at the corner of the room, where she stood and smiled at him, she nodded before mouthing the words 'I love you.â He closed his eyes momentarily and when he reopened them again she was gone.
The life and soul of his world. Was gone.
