“…having lost the game, kick over the chessboard…”
I’m watching an interview and Moffat is talking about HLV, and he compared Sherlock shooting Magnussen to him losing at chess and kicking over the chess board…
are sherlock and john shagging?
Benedict Cumberbatch: No. I like women.
Mark Gatiss: No. That's not what we're doing.
Steven Moffat: We're lying though. Or not.
Martin Freeman: gay. gayest story in the history of television
Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock is very good with his hands. I bet he can make a woman come without even -- a PERSON, that person that captures his interest- because he's cool and suave and intimidating and his fingers are fucking-- his fingers - He's so sexy and scary have you looked at him
Steven Moffat: We're not actually lying.
Benedict Cumberbatch: I did all the motion capture. Sherlock tops. Have you heard of Martin Freeman?
Martin Freeman: they will kill me if I talk
Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock shagged Irene.
Steven Moffat: Hahahahahaha no he didn't.
Mark Gatiss: Slash shippers though. Wild bunch. They write things I couldn't possibly dream of.
Mark Gatiss: No, I have never written a novel about historically inaccurate soldier gangbangs, why are you asking
Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock can't be gay, I really like women. I married one.
Martin Freeman: Two bros can be friends. I don't bone my male friends sometimes.
Steven Moffat: We're definitely ALWAYS LYING.
Benedict Cumberbatch: Man, I have great hands. Anyway, me and John Watson on a bed in space, handcuffed to one another
My fannish feelings (let me show you them)
Man, fandom really alienates me in 28846851 ways, as I often say. And it’s funny ‘cause I really admire it. I admire the transformative nature of fandom… from afar. But comparing Johnlock to transformative ship like Harry/Draco or Sherlock/anyone else (hah!) or saying we’re 'free to engage however we wish’ misses the point. Personally, I know I’m free, but then I always felt free. Canon always feels like home, not a prison, no matter what happens. I just don’t want to 'break free’, unlike Moriarty. Like, I understand that people write these things because others or they themselves are really upset and/or looking for something to cling to or believe in in a cold, hard universe or what have you. You gotta find your comfort where you can. But that’s why I said fandom frequently alienates me– conspiracies, fake-out episode theories and even fanfiction in general has never been even close to 'enough’. It just… doesn’t help. It doesn’t work at all, haha. I understand why people react the way they do, but sometimes I think I have an innately different idea of what fanfiction is for.
It’s true that Series 4 didn’t fulfill all my hopes and wishes, and obviously I was wrong about the direction of the Authorial Intent, and I still think that’s a crying shame even though I understand the limitations of thinking about that in the context of textual interpretation. But like I said in that meta yesterday, issues of intent have to do with the social aspects of fandom, not fanfiction (obviously). But of course, turning to fanworks to fix or somehow escape canon (whether it’s speculative meta or fanfic) is part of the fundamental nature of fandom. I just… don’t do that. At all. And I’ve never particularly enjoyed fanworks that wilfully refused to follow canon in any obvious way instead of integrating (because that tends to read as OOC to me). Just for example, I may not be crazy excited about something like Sherlock/Mycroft, which is clearly acanonical, but normally it genuinely doesn’t bother me. But if I see a ship like that combined with Johnlock so that it replaces it, where Sherlock chooses Mycroft over John, then I get pissed. And it’s not because I’m a shipper (or not just) but because it’s so blatantly not only OOC but transformative in a way that’s anti-canon. Like, you really cannot sell that after the scene in TFP where Sherlock seriously considered shooting Mycroft, and in fact, it’s clear that this writer didn’t want to consider it. They were disregarding canon reality and substituting their own, and that sort of thing drives me batty with fic. You can always tell when the fic is going out of its way to misread the characters and/or rebelling against canon, and it never once worked for me in all my years of reading oodles of fanfic. I was never even tempted by 'Epilogue What Epilogue’ fics in HP (needless to say, breaking up Harry’s marriage held even less appeal). So yeah, I definitely can’t look forward to years of doing that post-S4, haha. Not that… I think I’d have to, 'cause the door to Johnlock is wide open after TFP (and unfortunately, so is the door to other ships… and hell yeah, that’s pretty unfortunate, seeing as the very existence of straight!Sherlock seems like an abomination to me, honestly).
My reasoning for why explicitly canon Johnlock was definitely important and necessary goes like this: 1) it’s the natural conclusion to Sherlock’s arc and the emotional resolution to unresolved developments in Series 3, beginning in TRF; 2) representation and avoiding queerbaiting. But there’s definitely also 3) cutting off fandom straight-washing of Sherlock and John in the fandom and vindicating/establishing our understanding of his characterization as canon. I don’t apologize for that. I still firmly stand for that. Straight or bisexual Sherlock is not something I calmly accept in the context of his BBC incarnation, not least because it’s ridiculous and OOC, and you have to do some serious mental gymnastics to justify it canonically. But I also honestly simply find it harmful in the context of fandom as well as being queerbaiting in canon. Obviously, I mean, fandom has but a fraction of the social power and cultural resonance that the hugely popular media property of BBC Sherlock does. But heteronormativity is always problematic and it’s not more present in the media than in fandom in the sense that it’s present everywhere equally, by its very nature. Obviously, we fight against it more here, so there’s clearly less of it here in one sense, but heteronormativity always remains something to push back against with the intent to eradicate. And in the context of the canon characterization of BBC Sherlock, even reading Sherlock as bisexual (as in, displaying actual or potential attraction to women) is quite blatantly, extremely heteronormative, and so it’s pretty distasteful to me. I do think it’s that obvious that he’s gay, yes. And so… a future of endless fanworks at this point is definitely a very mixed blessing.
Still, if you asked me, I’d say I’m naturally fannish (obsessive about fiction and into discussing it and writing stuff inspired by it). And I fully understand that for many people, fic exists in part to 'argue’ with canon or willfully ignore canon where preferred. As someone who mostly has experience writing Harry/Draco fanfiction, you’d think I’d necessarily have experience with that. Isn’t 'ignoring parts of canon I didn’t like’ what I had to do when I wrote H/D?

Ficlet: Friday Nights
Friday nights at 221B are the same as before. Just different.
Before, it had always been a night of takeaway, a scotch or two, and reading in the chairs by the fire (or, occasionally, for Sherlock, the violin at the window). It’s now mostly the same, only the sofa is the preferred location, and in between dinner and scotch, there’s a bath for Rosie, and bedtime.
(Also, the scotch is just for John. Sherlock sticks with tea these days.)
Once Rosie is settled, John will come downstairs and usually find Sherlock in some odd position or another at the far end of the couch; slumped almost horizontal, or hugging his knees, or backwards with his head hanging over the edge and his legs stretched up the wall. John will smile as he enters the sitting room, imagining Rosie in a few years, next to Sherlock with a book and an equally improbable contorted position. He’ll pour his drink, queue up a playlist on the laptop (a mix of their preferences: film scores for him, 80’s French pop for Sherlock), pick up his novel, and settle in at the near end, closest to the stairs. He’ll switch on the baby monitor, then sit properly, one leg crossed over the other, his left hand caged over the rim of his glass on the arm of the sofa, his book in his right.
A bit later, when the light is too low, Sherlock will need to get up to turn on the lamp, and when he settles back down, he’ll do so on his back, his legs flopped over the armrest, the top of his head just barely brushing John’s hip. By this time John will have relaxed his own posture a bit, settling against the back of the sofa, his legs stretched out on the coffee table in front him.
Invariably, after some time, Sherlock’s reading material will get flung across the room; John will not even startle. Sherlock will rise indignantly and make his tea, and when he returns to the sofa in a huff, with a different journal, he will lie curled on his side, making John’s thigh a pillow. John’s drink will be finished by this point, so his left hand will hold the book, and his right will thread lightly through Sherlock’s hair, or rub the back of his neck, or rest on his arm.
Just as invariably, Rosie will fuss. Sometimes Sherlock will simply lift his head to give John room to get up, but sometimes, when John has had a particularly long day, Sherlock will lift not only his head but his entire body off the sofa, drop a kiss to the top of John’s head, and go upstairs himself.
(It is only during nostalgic remembrances on the night of Rosie’s graduation from university that they learn that each used to get tears in his eyes, listening over the monitor as the other soothed her; one with off-pitch nursery standards featuring misremembered or just plain made-up lyrics, the other with either a detailed explanation of the latest Met-botched investigation or life advice about how she must cope with being smarter than everyone she’ll ever meet.)
Later, back downstairs, sometime after midnight, John’s eyelids will droop, and he’ll lean his head back and doze until he feels Sherlock stand up. He’ll look up at the man looking back down at him, eyes and face and heart open, a hand extended to take him to bed, and his eyes will fill (maybe for the second time that night) at what they had to go through to get to where they are. And Sherlock will pretend not to notice, and stand silently until John’s hand is in his, and then they will move together through the kitchen and down the hall.
Friday nights at 221B are the same as before.
Just much, much better.

Breaking the 4th Wall
Reading through Ariane DeVere’s transcript of TFP:
MYCROFT: She knew things she should never have known … (Nearby, an overweight boy stands on one of a row of stepping stones across a stream. Wearing yellow boots, jeans and an olive-coloured jumper, he tosses a pebble into the water, perhaps attempting and failing to skim it. He looks across towards adult Mycroft, who turns away from him. Beyond him, little Eurus has her back to him and is watching as seven year old Sherlock, wearing red trousers, wellington boots and a dark yellow patterned jumper and with a pirate hat on his head, slashes at the water with his plastic sword. Adult Mycroft bends down and picks up a large pebble from the water’s edge.) MYCROFT (in 211B): … as if she was somehow aware of truths beyond the normal scope. (He opens his hand in front of him. His fingers are wet and a large pebble lies in his palm. In his mind, young Eurus turns around on the beach and looks directly at him. Mycroft looks startled.) EURUS: You look funny grown up. (In 221B, Mycroft straightens up in his chair a little, staring towards the fireplace.)
So, um. Eurus (who is either a story come to life or a living person turned into a story) interrupts the story being told within the story to address the storyteller. That’s awfully metafictional.

There you have it, gang, Derren Brown has infiltrated Finland
And yes, the best thing about Sherlock North is that it has introduced us non-Finns to the concept of going to the marketplace
Just like, a quick fyi, Rebs deleted, and some piece of shit stole xe’s url, and now they’re gonna post anti-tjlc stuff, which will most likely be homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, amongst other stuff, so you should block the account

The Space-Time Continuum in BBC’s Sherlock Part II: Reflection and Reproduction
So, @tjlcisthenewsexy made some great comments on the original The Space-Time Continnum in BBC’s Sherlock meta and I started to reply, but then I had a big breakthrough and I feel it needs its own post.
The amount of parallels and direct homages to previous episodes in Series Four are more than numerous at this point. There are so many that its almost like they are re-doing entire episodes. Well, they are. The reason and method of which was confounding me for awhile, but I figured out the reason with my original Space-Time meta, and the method I just discovered this morning.
Here is a basic timeline of episodes in BBC’s Sherlock
Now, accounting for what we learned in The Space-Time Continuum Part I meta, here is some additional information:
The glass in TAB serves as a reflection or mirror between Series three and Series Four, which is why the Series MIRROR each other, as in literally mirror.
EDIT TO ADD: @tjlcisthenewsexy pointed out the awesome phrasing that Molly gives us in HLV during Sherlock’s MP fall after being shot. She wonders if he should go forwards or backwards. This moment could easily be considered a second zero null vector because it is at this point Sherlock decides to start going backwards-towards TRF. Didn’t it seem odd how quickly he forgave Mary and how quickly The Watson’s marriage was back on track? That’s because he started rewinding the state of their relationship to the beginning of that episode!!!
(Interesting Side Note about Peppers Ghost, the parlor trick used in TAB. (Taken from Wikipedia)
The basic trick involves a stage that is specially arranged into two rooms, one that people can see into or the stage as a whole, and a second that is hidden to the side, the “blue room”. A plate of glass (or Plexiglas or plastic film) is placed somewhere in the main room at an angle that reflects the view of the blue room towards the audience. Generally this is arranged with the blue room to one side of the stage, and the plate on the stage rotated around its vertical axis at 45 degrees.[2] Care must be taken to make the glass as invisible as possible, normally hiding the lower edge in patterning on the floor and ensuring lights do not reflect off it.
When the lights are bright in the main room and dark in the blue room, the reflected image cannot be seen. When the lighting in the blue room is increased, often with the main room lights dimming to make the effect more pronounced, the reflection becomes visible and the objects within the blue room seem to appear in thin air. A common variation uses two blue rooms, one behind the glass and one to the side, which can be switched visible or invisible by alternating the lighting. (x)
This would explain Blue light hell @skulls-and-tea!! Every time we see a blue light, what we are witnessing is a reflection of something else from the series!)
So, the three episodes of each series literally reflect each other like this:
So the episode breakdown would look like this:
Do you see how the series are literal reflections of each other? There is of course still parallels to each of the episodes outside of this flow chart (like illusions to Sumatra in TEH and TST), but that can be accounted for by the fact that time isn’t actually linear. While these series reflect eachother as a basic method of understanding, the space of each episode still exists all in one time, so there will still be homages to “other” space-times.
The reflection of the two series explains why The Six thatchers is so similar to His Last Vow, with the guns and the slo-mo gunshot and Mary’s secret assassin storyline and would help a lot of us EMPers who are so attached to HLV being the beginning of EMP realize why we thought this so vehemently after TST. TLD and TSoT are connected by their emotional focus and their progression of John and Sherlock’s relationship. They are also linked by the only two JohnLock hugs in existence. TEH and TFP are very similar in the countdown/bomb motifs, bond-esque baddie plots, A focus on Mycroft and Sherlock’s relationship, and the inclusion of The Holmes parents.
Now, if you notice, Series Three and Four also has A LOT of parallels to Series Two, but they don’t work as a mirror! Series 3 & 4 are not a reflection of Series 2, but a reproduction of it! If Sherlock is working is way through how to defeat Moriarty at point zero, then he will need to work through all the steps (Absolute Past) that led him to that point- (i.e Series 1 and more specifically, Series 2). So the entirety of Series 3 & 4 is a retelling of Series 2, folded in on itself. Why? Because TIME IS NOT LINEAR! For the visual learners (that’s me) this explanation would look something like this:
Its a circle, folded in on itself. Its literally the space-time continuum come to life!! If we want to break it down episode by episode I made table for that! (I’m really getting a lot of use out of Word today)
This is just a short list off the top of my head, so Im sure there is more- feel free to add on! Like John being kidnapped ASiB, TEH, and TFP!
As I stated before, there will definitely be parallels within every episode to every other episode because time has folded and twisted in on itself in Sherlock’s mind. Its all existing at once. So the parallels in ASiB to TST or in TRF to TFP, are purposeful and a reminder that time is not linear.
I hope these charts helped explain the theory a little more!
Tagging some people that I think might enjoy it based on their comments on the first part!

The Space-Time Continuum In BBC’s Sherlock
Disclaimer: The math and science of this post could get complicated for some, but it is REALLY important if you want to grasp what I think is happening on the show right now. I am going to try to explain things the best way I know how, but, if you have questions or want me to break it down further, my inbox is always open.
Let me start by giving you a little hook to bait you into reading some seriously complex stuff:
In 1895, H.G. Wells in his novel, The Time Machine, wrote, “There is no difference between Time and any of the three dimensions of Space except that our consciousness moves along it”. He added, “Scientific people…know very well that Time is only a kind of Space” (x)
So in a book published in our favorite year, written by a man who was reportedly very sexually progressive and extremely unsatisfied by the numerous female partners he accumulated over his years (x), we have the idea that time, something the Sherlock fandom has been obsessing over the last several weeks (years), is only a kind of space…
Interesting.
Get your pencils and notebooks out, because we are going back to school under the cut.

So @warmth-and-constancy uh….. this is an interesting version of a script to send to the Emmys when 1) that line wasn’t in it and 2) they kept on using “you know what happened to the other one” as an ambiguous line, that may not have referred to a Holmes sibling at all.
so you’re telling me that in 2016 they sent this to the emmys and risked them knowing the “Eurus Holmes sister” plot twist for a year.
*MASSIVE SIDE EYE*
also, mark was always going on about how there was a line they didn’t write down–that he just said it on the day of filming so that it couldn’t be leaked anywhere–and it was at least strongly implied it was the ‘other one’ line (maybe even explicitly said once? i can’t remember for sure). so if that’s true, why would this be in the script at all?
fyi even the other one version (the line which aired) wasn’t on the script, mark himself said that on the bfi tfp premier
